hmmm 'islate' doesnt really have that ring to it, but maybe it was just like iPod was when it started... to me it will always be called the tablet

They could call it the iTurd and it would still sell like crazy.

This isn't Disney. Apple needs to drop the "Magic" naming convention. They can drop the "i" as well.

Magic this, i that... Childish.

Good piece of journalism. iSlate seems as good a name as any. I don't really care what it's called as long as it's a cool piece of kit ;) if it asks as a wireless keyboard and/or mouse for osx desktops that would be nice. Even though I would like it to run OSX I think it's ok if it runs a version of iPhone OS as long as they allow multiple apps open at the same time.
Really looking forward to seeing what they produce! I just need to find some cash now.... I was saving for a new iPhone in June/July... If the tablet is cool enough I may just stick to my 3G for another year and get a new toy :)

I'm pretty sure they won't call it the iSlate, not only does it sound atrocious. It's probably being used as a cover front to discover leaks within Apple. They have been known to do this in the past so it's highly likely this may be the case here. iSlate sounds awful. Makes me think of roofing...

As bad as MacBook?

I remember the uproar when they changed from the lovely iBook and PowerBook brands to the clunky sounding MacBook.

But we got over that, right?

MacBook was never a bad name, its an excellent name. Before the "Mac" naming convention no average person had a clue what Apple computers were actually called. Neither did half the people who owned.

MacBook "Air" on the other hand, is the worst product name ever conceived, and will be second only to iSlate if Apple could possibly be that stupid.
:apple:Slate would be acceptable. But no more so than :apple:Plate.

My evidence is that the guy pulled everything related to iSlate down—his 7 videos at YouTube and all his blog postings at http://macslate.blogspot.com/

That's not probative. I and countless other people have pulled down webpages. For example, i got digged once, exceeded my quota, and started racking up charges. That doesn't mean apple legal is involved everytime a web page is removed.

Since any apple attorney would be committing an ethical breach by demanding takedown, i suggest a simpler explanation is in order.

Nice work, Arn!

This is getting juicy. I'm getting the distinct impression that this will be an extremely important and core product from Apple. We're not talking the iPod Shuffle here.

Don't really care about the name - they could call it the iSlab for all I care about that.

I just care about the product itself. Hopefully Apple comes up with something that changes my mind on tablet computers.

I think the i is getting tired. How about use da instead?

da Pad. da Slate. da Pod. da Phone.

The premise of this news item is simply wrong.

Apple has registered "iSlate" to prevent competitors
from naming their slates in a manner which would capitalize on the "i" naming convention history used by Apple. It is simply one of many iterations that Apple has an interest in preventing others from using.

The name of the new tablet device is "iPad" as it leverages existing brand identity of the iPod, it rolls off the tongue, and it simply and elegantly describes the device physically and functionally.

Anyone who suggests Apple would use any other name isn't thinking clearly.

"Magic Slate" is such a bad suggestion as to be laughable. It's not an Etch-a-Sketch toy, it's an advanced technology media delivery device.

Were they able to buy that trademark from Fujitsu, then?

2 kinds of tablets coming?

I think the name iPad is a lot more commercial than iSlate. Slates were used in schools (when people used to actually write) or Film Slates... Doesn't make much sense to me.
I, for one, believe they will release a 10" iPad real tablet and a 7" Wacom Bamboo-like iSlate or Magic Slate that will be used as an input device but with an LCD screen... It would be sweet if the Slate was wireless and Wi-Fi so u can see your computer's screen on the tablet's screen and use it as a mouse, etc...

I believe there is an app for the iphone that let's u see and control your computer via wi-fi, so it's doable...

:apple:

You have to be kidding. What's with all the cloak-and-dagger, Apple? Grow up Steve. Geeze. Did they trademark "M" or "007" anywhere?
What is your problem? They trademark a name that they might use in the future without disclosing publicly who is applying for it so that the competitors do not know about years before. What is immature about this? I would understand it if you called immature the desire to investigate and speculate about the name and features of a product that might be released in just a month, but I don't see how this corporate action can be deemed so. Being irrationally judgmental does not make anybody more valuable.

Slate does not roll off the tongue well, I agree, iPad is phonetically so close to iPod, it would be awful, especially oversees where the pronunciation of "o" and "a" can have even more subtle variations. MacPad or something maybe, but definitely not iPad. Maybe I gotta go back and think a bit more clearly. :)

my thoughts on this:

a) i doubt it will be called slate/islate because of the negative meaning in british english ("informal for criticize severely" says apple's dictionary)

b) whatever the name, it's going to be very cool

b2) ...and expensive:(

c) I'm really looking forward to it!:)
