I love how everyone is super-dissecting this "and touch" thing but it could just as easily be because "theres something you have to see!" is a well known saying, and iPad is a touch device, so they just added "And touch."

If this is the actual iPad 3, i think its odd that Apple is actually showing us the new genration device before launch. I know it still leaves a lot to be curious about, but I dont remember an iOS device being shown in this manner before launch.

The missing homebutton is just cuz the picture looks nicer.
As to an Ipad 3 without one would just look ugly and loose its style.

Trust me, there will be a home button as long Jony Ive has his say.

You mean the guy who likes the most SIMPLE of designs?

buttons =/= simple

I know this isn't that big of a deal, but I'd love to see iTunes LP on my iPad as well. I mean, I think the screen size is PERFECT to access that kind of media. Wishful thinking, but I wonder if more people would be interested in buying the LP's if you could use it on a portable device...

I too was shocked that they'd put an image of a new device in the invite

Uh...pretty much all the time I'm not home.
If you haven't seriously used iPad with 3G, you're seriously missing something.

This is right on. 3G is a NECESSITY for 90% of the people I know. You can't ever be out of connection. Ever.

The screen shows Maps, Calendar and Keynote.

The Calendar displays the date of the event, and Keynote shows that it’ll be a Keynote event (duh).

What about Maps though ? It shows Apple headquarters, yet the event won’t be held over there. I suspect a major overhaul to Maps, like 3D perspective and 3D buildings. Apple already bought the best company out there to do this. The upcoming iPad could become the best GPS device ever made.

Which is why I feel like they have to be messing with us... photoshop'd areas of an iPad 2. Or the thing is identical appearance wise (minus the screen) and this is it... upside down with the camera edited out... actually, who knows or cares. I just want it b/c of the screen.

MMMmmm... the iPad 2 invite showed an iPad.

See = tv?

See and touch...
See = retina
touch = slightly new design, smoother graphics etc maybe

"We have something you really HAVE TO SEE". Could be referring to the retina display on the upcoming third gen iPad, OR/AND could be referring to an Apple TV, either a full fledged set or just an upgrade to Apple TV set top box. Maybe touch has something to do with how you interact with the TV set (like using an iOS touch device to control it?)

I did a test and used the bubbles as reference points. This is definitely portrait mode or the wallpaper has been purposely changed for this advertisement.

use the 6 bubbles almost parallel to each other above the pointed finger. i tried to find those same bubbles in landscape mode but couldnt.

You would be inadvertently touching it all the time.

Well, the new capacitive button could automagically appear on the center bottom of whatever orientation the tablet is in. No more button on the left or right side when in landscape mode.

I think it would be an awesome idea, get the button out of hands way in landscape, and it could be transparent to developers.

That would be so cool!

just look at the standard background they used:

when the device is in landscape orientation, you don´t see those 6 big bubbles :confused: .. so either they held it upside down or they did remove the home button.

oh and by the way, you can see the difference between retina and standard-res.

Of course the explanation could be that with a retina display the icons are clearer and thus can be smaller and more can be spaced together on the screen. If you look at the two pics anyway, yours with the 5 bubbles and the one from the invitation, the calendar app is much closer to the 5 bubbles in portrait mode then your is. So maybe the home button is just to the left out of view and you are seeing the amount of screen real estate and the clarity to the right of the home button. Maybe there are now more icons in a row or more stationary ones in the dock. Maybe the stationary icons can be resized and so you can fit more.

Apple won't release a touch screen iMac because fatigue so unless the remote is touch screen then that won't work either... It will be a set top box - Apple has changed from the "only few people have the luxury to own our products" philosophy to the newer "the more hands our products are in the better we can build on them" philosophy so they want to sell this thing for next to nothing, and <$100 does just that.
