Apple Issues Invitations for iPad 3 Media Event on March 7

have to admit a retina screen would be useful got an iphone 4s at Christmas genuinely did not see what all the fuss was about then when my mom got an android samsung the other day i could see why the ipad needs retina

Giz points out that you can't get the spacing between the icons like that unless you are in portrait mode so now I think they are going all out no home button. I'm not an iPad user (yet, I'm getting an iPad 3) but what about the other buttons. Which other buttons (or the switch) do you not use often and could be eliminated. Seems changing the volume could be done with a gesture as well as locking orientation.

My iPad with 6 icons on the dock has that spacing in landscape.

I can't wait, to find out when I will be waiting in line! And if any Samsung people come up to me, I'll tell them to f off. :)

People for there to be no home button that would imply a new API for developers and I have not seen any new API for developers to use that replaces the home button.

There is a home button.

Is this a very small finger, or a huge iPad?
When I hold my fingers this way it surely looks quite bigger relatively to the shown display.

Yeah, it's the finger size confounding me most ... not the resolution or orientation. Either we have giant fingers compared to the hand model, or the photo is altered.

The black frame and app icons are nowhere near that large on the iPad 2.

That picture is taken at a close enough distance that if it was the old display, you should still be able to discern the pixels on a low-res monitor... Assuming it's not a mockup, it definitely looks like a "retina" display.

I'm not doubting the "retina" display, just saying you can't really tell from a picture on a monitor that was probably heavily retouched anyhow.

Its in landscap mode....

I am excited for this, my iPad 1 is chugging along fine, and still does what I need but I haven't purchased any new apple tech in 2 years, so I'm due for something, this may be it....or a macbook air....hmmmmm

Either way iPad 3 ftw!

Don't think its landscape, look how it is spaced. May be in for a surprise...:)

How would this change the API for developers? Meh... I'm not saying it will certainly not have a Home Button but that makes 0 sense. lol

Wow, that's clearly a higher res screen! (he says while viewing on his iPad 2).

You can't see the magnets for the smart cover either. This clearly means they're using a magnet-free "invisible cover"

I can't wait!

There is a home button.

4/5 finger pinch to close apps...?
It's already there and possible.

Also the bubbles (as I called them, but are actually droplets) positions are slightly different on the invite to on my iPad 2, but only by a few pixels (iPad 2 pixels... lol)

Technically you don't need it anymore, the all fingers gesture works great. In fact, sometimes I have it upside down or landscape and have to search for where the home button is anyway, so forcing people to use the gesture may be better.

Edit: Ah, just thought of something I use the Home button for, forced shutdown. When it locks up (rarely, but it does), I hold the Home and Power buttons until it shuts down. I'm sure they would have an alternate way to do that.

There is a home button.

What API? Developers don't have access to the home button.. only Apple does, because everyone knows what the home button is for.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

This is so going to be available to purchase on march 7th... Exciting...

What exactly makes you think so? They've never done that for an iPad or iPhone.

Something interesting to note. Apple are basically announcing that the thing has a Retina Display with their wording of the invite. I think that suggests they have something secret in store for us, maybe software or hardware for the iPad 3. Anyway, i can't wait!

Back to my Mac, via iCloud, built in to iOS? With the retina display, it would make sense...

Yay - Retina Display.

Can't wait to read all the complaints about how people's installed apps look like garbage like when everyone got their iPhone 4 ;)

I kid. Mostly.

There's a problem with your argument. Put 5 icons on your dock in portrait, with Calendar being 1 from the right. Then change your background to the rain one. Look at it. It fits perfectly. The droplets of rain are in the right position. If you try that in landscape it the wallpaper doesn't fit.

With any other company I'd say that this would just be a simple mistake. But this is Apple. They wouldn't get it wrong like that.

If there was new music quality coming, wouldn't the caption on the photo for the event have said you gotta see it, touch it, and hear it?
