The '5' is of course intentional.

The theory that it's 5 new products is interesting but I believe the stronger guess is that it will be a reference to the iPhone 5 as the name of the next phone.

(Can we please drop the nerd counter that it's the sixth-gen iPhone. The average consumer doesn't know this and more importantly, doesn't care.)

Question: Why would Apple drop the number from the iPad but keep it with the iPhone???

I don't think Apple will officially market it as iPhone 5. But it has received a lot of media attention by that name. It is no secret that the iPhone 5 will most likely be introduced during this event.

Alternatively, maybe the 5 refers to another date for the iPad mini unveiling, who knows.

One thing I am absolutely sure of is that on 9/12 I will be reloading the Apple store page, until it is updated, after which I will order 2 new iPhone :D

In that leaked printing press photo, what background image is that? Is that the galaxy image like the ones in osx?

Ya, it's the default galaxy wallpaper of Mountain Lion, which proves that this photo is fake. Apple is going with the blue "ripple" background for iOS 6 and all future devices.

Nice try tho!

They're probably not going to be announcing the iPad Mini at this event since people are already saying that it will be part of a separate event in October.

Oh, not again.

It's the 5th generation iPhone. The original iPhone and the iPhone 3G are both considered the first generation because they had identical hardware internally, except for the baseband chip.

Ahhh, What?!?! So iPhone 3GS was 2nd Generation... therefore iPhone 4 was 3rd Generation? Why was it called the iPhone 4 then?

Silly.

The icon under the Calendar looks like YouTube to me.. Thus making this fake, because they are in fact getting rid of YouTube, and they would not market it on the box art.

One iPhone to rule them all,
Two models to find them,
Five products to be introduced and in the darkness bind them.

You'd be surprised how much of a difference a better cell chip can make.

You could say the same about:

iPhone 3G - Second iPhone
iPhone 4S - Fifth iPhone
Correct. That is why there is an underground cult of us that still call these the 2nd iPhone (iPhone 2) and the 5th iPhone (iPhone 5) on a day to day basis among our friends because we get turned on by confusing and muddled conversations.

Steve Jobs said that for naming purposes, huh? I don't think the general public can grasp the tick/tock strategy for numbering, but it better be consistent in terms of numbering (as in 5 following 4) for naming purposes.

You don't get what I mean. General public is not interested in generation neither tick/tock or naming conventions. They read/list/watch a new product is out and ask for the new something. What they *could* eventually get, and what enthusiast should easily get but seems unable to, it's that S stand for minor updates.

I am really surprised that people thinks that aside from tech people that are on tech forum someone should remember which code represented an iphone (or a car model, or a consolle, or a tv, or a camera) an year or two before.

I never see things like
Parent: "I want the new playstation"
Clerk "the PS3?"
Parent "the latest playstation…"
Clerk "you mean the PS3?"
Parent "go **** yourself"

I always see
Parent: "I want the new playstation"
Clerk: "Here it is"

And I don't think this is stupid (consumer attitude) at all, what I feel stupid is to obsess over meaningless details.

Yup. There's quite a bit of things wrong with that picture. The YouTube icon is present, the Passbook icon is nowhere to be found, and I'm certain they wouldn't label it "the new iPhone" on the box even if they called it that. For the new iPad, it just says "iPad" on the box. And those two icons on the 5th row look to be Contacts and Compass. I don't think those would be the icons Apple would add right on the home screen.

-No iCloud icon
-no Passport
-YouTube is present
-iPad 3's packaging is "iPad," not "the new iPad"

There's that annoying "logic" that's so popular these days.

Listen here, buddy, Nostradomus predicted the leaking of iPhone packaging. This IS legit.

I can't believe there are over 550 posts here about the frikkin name - STILL!

Jeeez - It's just a name who gives a flying one about what its called.

On the back of the phone it will just say iPhone like all the others coz that is what it is. The other bit number/letter is just there so that when you go and buy it you don't get suckered into the old one by mistake - coz you is stoopid! see.

iPhone 5 with carbon fibre unibody back - just you watch...

Has it occurred to any of those people that the product name has nothing to do with the generation of development? It's about market recognition.

Right after September 12, people will start arguing that the next iPhone is actually iPhone 7, and not six.

It's like they don't know the definition of insanity.
