So wait, it's "official"? Everyone seems to be clinging to the idea that it's "officially" about the iPhone 5..

While I agree, it is more than likely the iPhone 5, the only thing "official" about this is that something with a 5 is going to be announced on the 12th.

Could be a 5th gen iPod Touch for all we know.

Also, what if the 12 is for September 12 when the new iPhone is announced and the 5 is for October 5, when the new iPhone launches. I really cant imagine the 5 meaning "the iPhone 5"!

Like I already said the upcoming iPhone is a new iPhone, the number after it is simply marketing. You aren't going to market the phone after 4S as 6 to customers, it will be 5, which actually makes sense. 98% of customers don't know or care how many iPhones there have been, they are concerned with it being the next, new iPhone, which 5 comes after 4 and thus, iPhone 5 is what it will be called.

iPhone (number = marketing) (generation = how many phones)

Wait, if you add 1+2= 3, and then add that to the 5, 3+5= 8, which upside down is still 8! And an 8 also looks sorta like the infinity symbol if you turn it on its side, so that's it! iPhone Infinity! Lol

What is common sense about the 6th gen iPhone being named the iPhone 5?

Common Sense should suggest you that since billions of people doesn't take count of number of product generation while only a minority of probably some thousands people does, it's common sense to no worry about the thousands while naming a mass market product.

I wonder if the "5" is a misdirection of some kind. Maybe they have 5 things to announce between iPod, Macs and iPhone?

I struggle with the 6th generation iPhone, with an A6 processor, running iOS 6 and 4G LTE being called the iPhone 5. With all those numbers floating around it seems like a marketing nightmare. I would have gone with "The new iPhone" -- unless Apple feels like doing that with the iPad caused confusion.
Like the 5th generation iPhone, with an A5 processor, running iOS5 being called the iPhone 4S? And was not a marketing nightmare.

I banked on it being named 6 or the new iPhone as well... but it's obvious at this point. Give it up, move on.

In my experience the education deal applies to the computer models it says in the fine print right now, and they don't add new computers if they come out before the deal ends.
oh really, what a bummer. torn between pulling a trigger on the 15in non-retina or waiting for 13in retina.

Um, you can still buy an iPad 2 on the Apple Store website...your logic negates yourself.
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_ipad/family/ipad

...and no it's not like the MacBook...when they come out with a new generation MacBook it's taken off the main store website, and only available via the clearance or refurb until supplies are gone.

I'm not saying it is like that NOW. I'm saying this is the direction I'd bet they are going with the new naming system. And that it wouldn't make sense with the iPhone because of multiple models. The iPad 2 is an abberation - they didn't keep selling the original iPad and I betcha they won't continue after the iPad mini comes out.

An iPhone 5 makes no sense.

iPhone
iPhone 3G
iPhone 3GS
iPhone 4 (note how the 3GS was counted)
iPhone 4S
iPhone ... 6. This is the 6th iPhone.

What your forgetting is that the numbers haven't always corresponded to the generation. The original iPhone is referred to also as iPhone 2G (as it only used 2G frequencies not because it was 2nd generation). The iPhone 3G (2nd Gen) was pretty similar to original iPhone but with 3G capabilities. 3Gs ,although the third generation, was a 3Gs because it was an enhancement of the 3G. Then... Apple ran out of g's to use, as 4G support wasn't everywhere. Hence iPhone 4.

If they called it iPhone 6, counting-wise yes thats viable, as it's sixth-gen, but to the 'average-joe' person who buys an iPhone, and maybe isn't as educated as some, would be asking:

"What happened to the iPhone 5??".

5 just, well... makes sense!!!!

Sure, but the days of people waiting with angst and baited breath for an iPod anything are long gone. They are a warmup act now, not a headliner.

If it looks different to the iPhone 4 it makes sense to call it the iPhone 5. If it was the same form factor you could call it something like the iPhone 4GS, or iPhone 4SE (purely made up).

If you were speaking strictly about generations it would make sense to call it the sixth iPhone (take note of how I ordered the words).

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the keynote.

iPhone ... 6. This is the 6th iPhone.

True, but there's a massive difference between calling it the iPhone 6 vs the 6th iPhone.

Why would they call it the iPhone 6? Why would they skip the iPhone 5? Is this new iPhone going to be so advanced that they decide they should skip a number? I don't think so.
