I don't think the argument that it should be named for the OS version makes sense because a lot of phones will run iOS 6, and next year when iOS 7 comes out, this phone will get it too.

I just don't like the idea of calling it the 5 because if this is the naming scheme we can expect (3, 3x, 4, 4x, 5, 5x, 6....) it just seems to be saying "Hey, if you care about an amazing new phone, we're only going to be doing that every other year." Even if it's true, why make it so obvious?

On the other hand, if it's true that every iPhone so far has sold as much as every previous generation combined, then perhaps people don't care if they are buying the half-step instead of the full-step. It just doesn't seem like the best marketing to imply each phone isn't as revolutionary as the last.

iPhone 6 might have been asking too much of the general public's intelligence, but i like the idea of just "iPhone (2012)." Works just fine for cars and iPads. And they never have anything except 'iPhone' on the back of it. We're left to identify the phone version aesthetically. Why not be consistent, then?

I guess them showing the name will be "iphone 5" means all these leaks are in fact the actual new device dammit!!! :(

The new iPhone...

:p , accurately photoshopped....

I am still convinced it will not be called iPhone 5

No way she'd show her face. Apple would have her killed.

According to Anandtech, Apple is on a two-year cycle for most major components with the iPhone. One year change the visual appearance (case, display), the other year advance the internal computing power to a new generation.

Ah. Well in that case I guess the iPhone 5 name works pretty well. I guess if people are skipping the x.5 version, that must also mean a lot of people are skipping simply the x version, because they want to wait for the kinks to be worked out of the new design and for the performance boosts. Obviously I'm in the first camp, with my iPhone 4.

I appreciate the clarification. I can't say the name doesn't make sense any longer. Though I'd still prefer simplicity of just "iPhone."

Well then what's going to happen when another new iPad comes out and they have 2 new ipads or skip a number?

They won't have two new iPads. When the 4th gen arrives, the 3rd gen will no longer be available to purchase (save of course eBay and places like that). The difference is the iPhone currently has 3 models in the marketplace - it needs differentiation. I think the iPad 2 being out was just a placeholder for the iPad mini. Once it's out, goodbye iPad 2.

Everyone who thinks Apple must be calling it the 5 because people can get confused, are wrong I think. Has No one ever noticed that Apple can use the iOS numbering scheme as a guideline to tell what iPhone one has. iPhone 4/4s was with iOS 5. The new iPhone will be accompagnied with iOS 6 and next year it will be the new iPhone with iOS 7 etc. etc. Look at the packaging of the iPhone the iOS version states on all previous packagings or will be from now on. It's the most logical and simplest thing to do to achieve clearity among those devices.

So my guess will be on september12th they will simply launch the new iPhone version iOS 6.

Wow, all of this bickering over what it will be named. Regardless of what it's called people will buy it.

What an ignorant comment. If you purchase an iPhone 4 brand new after iOS 6 is released, you will get iOS 6. If you purchase a 4S, you will get iOS 6. If you purchase a new iPhone/iPhone 5 (not getting into a battle about the name), you will get iOS 6. Explain to me how you can differentiate without a difference in naming the iPhone itself?

Do you think the iPhone 4 originally came with iOS 5?

I think Apple is doing this for our entertainment cause it is clearly not the iPhone 5 its the iPhone 6.. I bet you once they get on stage they will call it the new iPhone..

I truly don't think the next iPhone will have a longer screen or look like the leaks. The leaked cases mean nothing, remember the tear drop iPhone last year and all the leaked info? Only one thing makes me nervous that the longer iPhone could be real is remember that site that offered to turn iPhone 4's into "the new iPhone" or iPhone 5 (whatever they are gonna call it) apple shut them down. I don't really understand why that matters so much but whatever. Here is to hoping the new iPhone truly is a new design with a larger screen, not just taller.

Prepare to be disappointed. The difference from last year is the teardrop was purely a graphic design, but we never saw any parts leaks.

I don't mean to be rude, but you're extremely delusional. After all of the PHYSICAL leaked parts, the videos of people holding the parts, several website getting ahold of these parts... you STILL don't believe it? Like... what the ****?

There's no such thing as a teardrop iPhone! That picture was a RENDER. There was no evidence for that phone.

There's literally probably hundreds of articles all with actual pictures, videos and information about the SAME new iPhone.

I'm really baffled. Like what the hell are you people expecting?

They will print "The new IPhone" on the box with a space left so when nerds are gonna buy it the apple genius will ask if he prefer "A new iPhone 5" or "A new iPhone 6" and grab a sticker and paste it on the box...

Seriously who cares? iPhone 4S running an A5 chip iOS 5, an iPhone 5 running iOS 6 and an A6 chip.... Whouuu really who cares...

Ha! at everyone who argued until they were blue in the face that it would be the iPhone 6.

Some even said they wouldn't buy it if Apple called it the iPhone 5. Oops. Hahaha :D

Where was it announced that it was called the 5? I think you're about 7 days ahead of yourself.
