People having the (6th) iPhone 5 running iOS 6 is a support (marketing?) nightmare too. Maybe not nightmare but clearly confusion. People cant keep straight Windows and Office versions ("I've got Windows 2003" or better yet "I've got Microsoft 2000").

Nobody seemed to get confused last year having iPhone 4S running iOS 5, nor iPhone 3G running iOS 2.

I gotta say I love all the arguing over the title. I've tried to bring up the iPhone 5 vs 6 debate in person, and no one understands me. I get blank stares when I say iPhone 5 is really the 6th iPhone. Then I come here and see people arguing about it for 42 pages of comments, and it makes me feel good. :)

Me personally, I'm a 6er.

Huh? No they don't, and it would be in violation of their marketing agreements with Apple.

I didn't say Target.com, which is a little different.

My B&M Target has stickers on the actual iPads (I didn't say ALL Targets either). I actually took a photo but never posted it anywhere because it probably would get them in trouble. I'm just pointing out there are people having issues with these things.

That should tell you something. Out in the real world, "iPhone 5" is the perfect name. Talking about how it's really the 6th gets you blank stares, because they don't really care.

Here we at least care enough to set you right about the iPhone 5.

With that logic, the real world will accept it's the iPhone 6 just fine.

Well, at least they would have if all these people hadn't confused them by calling it an iPhone 5. Who started that anyways?!?!? Who's fault is this?

Here’s some interesting news. Just got off the phone with the Verizon rep in regards to my upgrade status. Started talking to him about the new Iphone coming out. Per the rep Pre-orders will take place starting 9/13 AND will start shipping after November 4th. I actually confirmed by asking him 3 times that Verizon customers will have to wait 6 weeks after placing a pre-order. He confirmed all 3 times and said it was the same thing when the Iphone 4 was announced 2 years ago. Take it for what it’s worth, I will be calling again tomorrow morning to see if I get a different answer.

No matter what Apple calls it for the sake of the general public, I will be referring to the new iPhone as the "Sixth Generation iPhone"

I'm going to say either you or the rep is full of it (and honestly, why would a rep risk his job to tell you that... I doubt apple has given the telecoms permission yet to actually officially say the phone is coming out. Sure, everyone "knows" but Apple hasn't actually officially made a statement yet).

For starters, I got the iphone 4 when it came out. It was not more than 3 weeks (maybe just 2 weeks even) between when they announced it (not when you could pre-order) and when you could buy it. So some one is full of it on that and that's an already known fact.

Secondly, that sounds like really bad marketing to announce it so early if the phone is not going to be available until almost 2 months later, I really doubt Apple would do that. I would bet they would have held off on the announcement if they aren't going to be ready 'til November. It's what they did last year for the 4s (That got announced later).

I was that rep... I was just screwing with you.

I am just telling you what the rep told me. No need to get a riled up.

Doesn't really matter what it calls. It's the sixth generation iPhone and will be called the new iPhone or iPhone 5, it's wont be the iPhone 6, unless apple already released an iPhone 5 I didn't know about. Who cares about numbers. Main thing is to see what beast apple us going to release.

I am just telling you what the rep told me. No need to get a riled up.

Fine, and I'm saying that rep is talking out of his ***. It's just annoying cause it's obviously bad info and the fact he tried to sell you into thinking it happened with the iphone 4 when it very obviously did not says to me you should take what he says with a grain of salt.

You also should take his info with a grain of salt for the other reasons I listed... for nothing else do you really think Apple would make the announcement 2 months before they actually released the phone? They've never done so before, in fact they like to keep it a secret til they are close to selling it to you. If they wanted to let you know that much in advance they really would have no need of being that secretive. Secondly, it's just not good marketing honestly. You want the product to be available while it is still fresh in people's minds. You don't want to give them time to cool down and decide it's not that exciting. Apple has shown they know how to market and that is not how you market a product (it's also why they don't offer many choices, they don't want you to get stuck trying to make a decision and then decide you need time. They want you to buy while you're still excited about it).

Also, do you really think Apple would be happy if Verizon was telling people what they were about to announce and when it would be available when Apple hasn't made that announcement yet? I mean aren't they known for being really strict with their partners about not letting info out? So even if rep was told something, I doubt he'd be so open about it or at least be, "hush hush but this is what they told me, you're not supposed to know yet").

I still think it is ridiculous to call the 6th generation iPhone the "iPhone 5", assuming that is what the 5 is referring to.

It's ridiculous people still expect companies to follow a naming scheme for the sake of consistency.

Where are the other 359 xbox's? Is the next one going to be 361?

The generation of iPhone has never been consistent and there's no reason it should be called iPhone 6. It's the iPhone [whatever they want to call it].

NO. This '5 new products' theory is idiotic. Apple's invite says "It's almost here." IT'S. Not "they". Has Apple forgotten basic grammar now?

It's clear that iPhone is pointing at the iPhone 5 with this invite. I mean, damn, is it that difficult for you guys? They make the simplest invite and everyone has to read into it.

It seems like most people supporting this theory are the ones who still think it'll be called the iPhone 6.

"It's" cant correspond to the event itself?

I assumed the numbering system would finally be put to an end on the iPhone line. The "new" iPhone if you will. Considering that we have many rumors pointing to 5 items total being real eased at this event it's logical to have at least give it the possibility.

Nobody seemed to get confused last year having iPhone 4S running iOS 5, nor iPhone 3G running iOS 2.

Really? Nobody? As a test question ("nobody seemed to get confused") that would be marked as FALSE as it's not really provable. Many kids with smarts will tell you "every", "all", "none" and the assorted are generally false (unless it's a math question); notice how I didn't say "all kids".

That's because everyone(!) knows the 4s is the 5th phone. Calling the 6th one the iPhone 5 is adding to the confusion. At some point when they've got a new OS that runs on the 4s and not the 4 will be confusing to explain to some people that they both aren't the same.

If someone has an iPhone 4 and you've got an iPhone 5, try explaining that theirs isn't the previous model to them. To explain it, you'll (probably look like a geek) and end up having to tell them you've got the 6th iPhone.

iPods were always referred to as what generation they were (but figuring out what you had wasn't particularly easy).

The 3G was a feature, NOT a number. This is obvious, isn't it? Or is it confusing?

If this phone was 5G, it would make sense. But to say it's the iPhone 5 (but not 5th gen) will likely be confusing to some.

And numbering is easier when there are less models. It wasn't the "iPhone 1" nor "iOS 1", there was a iPhone and an iPhone with with 3g. It wasn't "World War I" before "World War II".

Just number it like cars, make it the "iPhone 2013" then people will feel sheepish when it gets older :)

(Again, I'm not saying it should be the 6, it just shouldn't be the 5).

First off, I did say "for what it's worth".

In response to your other 2 paragraphs, I don't care!!! I am buying it regardless. Get over it.
Good Lawdy!!!

So here's the thing. A lot of people clearly think that this phone is not going to be called the "iPhone 5". If that's the case, what's the 5 for?
  • nano, shuffle, touch, mini, iPhone.
  • iPhone, retina devices and other Mac refreshes.
  • iPhones available in 5 fruit flavors.
  • 5 inch display iPhone.
  • 5 different iPhone models (seriously, we already have 3) add a 4 and a 5 inch, they've got the market covered.
  • Wouldn't it be funny if no iPhone were announced at all?

As far off as this might be, this is actually more on topic of the event and the mysterious 5.

No, not everyone knows the 4S is the 5th iPhone. Ask any random iPhone user who's not a member of this forum and I guarantee you they won't know what generation it is. They do know, however, that 4S comes after 4 and logic will tell them that 5 comes after 4S. It's not that difficult to understand.

The generation of iPhone has never been consistent and there's no reason it should be called iPhone 6. It's the iPhone [whatever they want to call it].

Actually, the first was consistent, the second was 3g and named so, the 3rd had an S added (to make it consistent*) and the fourth was pretty literal. The 4s isn't even inconsistent, it's a mod to the 4; pretty significant mod to the phone.

*I always believed they went 3gs to get the numbering in order and match the iOS version. I think there are still people confused about the iPhone 3g/3gs and iOS 3 and what phone they have.

All of the above actually have a bit of sense. But calling the 6th phone a 5 is like releasing a car and backdating it a year (compared to numbering it 4-6 months early with the 2013s coming out soon).

Except for the iPhone and the iPad 2, apple hasn't been big on numbering from year to year for many multiple of year. So number them consistently or don't number them.

Actually, logic says 5 comes after 4. But that's not what happened. Apple happened.
