The original iPod was announced on the 23rd October 2001 ... hypothetically, the placing of this announcement nearly ten years on could mean something big could happen...

So here's my two cents, the iPhone icon has a 1 notification next to it. What if this doesn't mean 1 phone, but rather 1 device. No more iPods, just iPhones, pottentially a low range and a high end iPhone.

This wouldn't surprise me for the following reasons:
  • Apple have a history of no longer backing outdated technologies that do less than current ones
  • The use of iPod has been removed as the name for the music app on iOS5
  • Apple make a number of controversial moves that seem silly to regular people, and saying that were in the post ipod era, and focussing on its "successor" is the kind of thing only apple would have the bollocks to do.

Ofcourse, this is only a theory, but I'd like to hear others views...

Cheers

I cant see apple killing the iPod line, not at this stage anyway.
If anything for the 10th birthday, I could see them doing a big refresh.

Which could mean merging the iPods into the iOS family.
Not full on iOS, but iOS lite.
With iOS5 being big on cutting the cabel, it's a great time for apple to take the iPod line to the next stage.
I don't see all of the iPod line becoming touch based.

I suspect that the "1" notification on the event invite does refer to a dramatically updated iPhone (5).

This doesn't rule out an updated/cheaper iPhone 4 though -- it's not as if Apple would need to have a big media event for such a device (if it's really only taking the place of the iPhone 3G in the market)? Isn't it possible that this iPhone 4S (or whatever) is announced at a later time, or with less fanfare?

I don't understand why everyone is concerned about the event invites hinting at only one new phone; the hype for this event has been too great for a minor upgrade, IMHO :)

(staying optimistic!)

No. It makes no sense for Apple to get rid of all iPods and just have iPhones. Lots of people buy iPods.

What hype? Aside from the official invite and the rumors floating around sites like this one. Until its announced officially, we'll have no idea if this will be a major or minor upgrade. And as for the "big media event," this is no different than previous releases, minor or major.

As for the "1," it definitely does mean something, unlike what some people say in this thread. Every icon there means something, so there's no reason to believe it has no significance. My opinion is that it means they will be announcing one iPhone model.

It's just showing a badge.

IT MEANS NOTHING... RIEN... NADA... GOURNISHT...NO MEANING.

Just wait until after the event when people will be trying to convince themselves about what the (1) referred to.

I suspect that the "1" notification on the event invite does refer to a dramatically updated iPhone (5).

It doesn't, because for that to make sense, Apple would be playing off the rumor that there would be multiple phones. "Nope!" sez Apple; "Just ONE". That would be stupid.

Why? Apple, of course, doesn't play off of rumors, preferring instead to ignore them completely. There is no reason why they would send out an invitation that played on the fact that there would be ONE phone, any more than it would be clever to say ONE MacBook or ONE iPod Touch. It's wishful thinking, that's all.

Yeah, it means something. The calendar means the date, the clock means the time, the map means the place, and the little notification icon means Apple has something to tell you. That's all.

i rely dunt understand y u gys dont get it.

RU STUPIDE! questionmark :eek::eek::eek::eek:

i hv rel issues! :(

wut do theyse fkin Pictos MEAN!?

chainsaw yes NO!

This actually reminded me of a thought I had a long time ago....

We all have a live calendar icon on our home screens (shows the date). So why not a live clock icon?

Live maps would be nice too, but that would probably make the battery cry.

iPhones and iPod touches are forming into 1 device. Like the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

Newbie here. I can't believe I sat and read all of the posts in this thread. After digesting and considering everything I read here, plus everywhere else on the net, I believe that we will see a new iPhone5 and a new cheaper Nano-style iPhone announced next week. iPhone5 immediately and the "Nano" available at a future date.

And I think the iPods will be refreshed on the 10 year anniversary of the original iPod, October 23rd.

Please, oh please! let the touch have 128GB, that's all I ask. :)

Not going to happen. Apple doesn't care about the iPod line anymore.

"The smaller you make the package, the bigger the impact it's content has"

Maybe a marketing trick which Apple uses to use a small venue and the lack of a whole circus surrounding it.?

I am not totally sold on the whole 2 phone thing.

I mean, why would you release a 4S as a cheaper option? Surely the 4 will become the cheap option? Unless they are pulling it completely but I can't see that happening? Unless they do pull it completely because of 'Antennagate' which they know still exists and some users are still reporting problems.

But other than that, I would say they would just release one model, whether it be the 4S or the 5, and the 4 then becomes the cheaper version?

I'm sure the people who do not have an iPhone currently but want one, will more than likely go with the cheaper option (whatever it may be) rather than the latest one out.

Exactly. Remember they've been using an iPhone 4 type case to disguise test models - hence all the photos with A5's, new cam etc. There probably will be a budget 4 like the 3Gs with 8Gig, but maybe a new antenna with a universal 3G radio so there is just one model. T-mobile isn't getting it because the idiots use a unique 3G system that can't be incorporated (yet) into a power friendly universal receiver. And seriously, LTE - does that actually work yet. Remember the bitching about 3G (non) reception. That rollout costs big, big money and you know how the providers like spending money, especially with the economy being fllushed down the toilet. The leaked 5 case designs are probably real, but Apple jumped on the leakers hard and killed further leaks. It will likely only have 512MB ram as ram sucks power too but who knows if there is a 64G memory chip, what it's price, size and power consumption is (does anyone know?).

To all the posters threatening to buy Sammies or Nokias or whatever, go ahead - make my day. After all, you deserve whatever you decide to buy (or what mummy or daddy get you). Now do I ditch my very nice 4 or wait for the next revision.......damn those mockups look good.

Don't care about either of those, but I'm tired of reading that it's 73 degrees and sunny. A live weather would be most welcome.

I have a weather app that gets around this somewhat by putting the temperature in the notifications badge, but it looks a bit ridiculous.

Possible. But when was the last time you saw Apple shy away from a large venue and massive publicity? ;)

Also, Voltron.

Seriously, you're still going with that whole "marketing" schtick are you? It's the 10th anniversary of the iPod that debuted at the campus. They'll probably re-run (part) of Steve's original intro. Maybe Tim will be announcing the NEXt big thing (promised at an earlier financial call).
And that package you're referring to - is that yours?

Youre right, think they will show a vamped up 4 just like mentioned in the icons for the invitation. It screams iPhone 4.....they could have pcked a day later but no.

Bummer.....Think I am about to cry right now...sniff

I know why they put a 1 as a badge.

Apple wanted to keep Steve's spirits up in his time of illness, so they thought they would screw with us and figured Steve watching these boards blow up with speculation would make him chuckle. :D

Hahaha good one, no really.

But man Apple is all about marketing. But I have to retract my statement as someone else just told me Apple won't be shy with a great event. And those icons screams iphone 4 man. Hope it ain't so but am affraid it is, 10th year iPod why don't they mention it.
