Doubtful. They will need time to get apps up and running so will do an announcement then release a beta dev sdk. Only after that will we start to see Apps on it.

Right, I am thinking they announce iOS 5 at WWDC and release beta sdk for devs with this capability. It could be more of a feature of apps on handhelds than an app for the appltv.

I just wish they would add support for 480p and/or 1080i output. My HD-ready TV doesn't support 720p so I'm still using a first-generation Apple TV. I use a PS3 for Netflix, so I don't absolutely need to "upgrade" to the ATV2 but as soon as they add apps (which I expect to happen within the next year) it will be a "must have" device for me.

24bit audio?

Does anyone know if the apple TV and airplay feature can stream 24bit audio to A/V receivers that support it?

You should use the DVD drive on your computer and put your movies into a useful format. It is time to let go of the past...

Ignoring the fact that it has plenty of uses and that a DVD drive would more then double the size....
So you would pay $99 for a DVD player?

The ATV is £101 GBP (converts to $165 USD) here. And yes, I would pay that for an Apple TV with a built in DVD (or heck, even BR) player...that or an AppleTV with an ability to add additional storage, and be actually usable. At the moment it is a pointless product in the UK.

Again, you clearly are looking at this from a US perspective. In the UK the total functionality of the ATV maxes out at buying content from itunes, streaming from your iDevice/Mac and watching youtube.

It's effectively a $99/£101 setup fee to a blockbuster subscription.

EDIT: and to top all that off, PAL content (I.E ANY UK content) is buggy as hell and stutters, even after this update.

How do you fast-forward a live event?

Well, I don't know if addresses this, but with MLB.TV, if you pause a game for a few minutes, you can FF some to skip ahead (catch up), but the screen goes blank. I've tried skipping over commercial breaks and end up going into the return video by a bit.

I'd like to see it improve the inning to inning jump during a live game.

Quoted for truth.

I'd love a tiny device in the bedroom that would play digital media as well as physical media.

At the moment I have a big DVD player then this tiny box. I can't seem to convince the wife that the best solutionis a mac mini. £0 with our current solution of Appletv and DVD player or shell out £600 for a mac mini.

If only the Appletv was the size of the air SuperDrive....
I'd scream if the appleTV 3 was a SuperDrive with A5 in it..
Perfect box.

I don't get it. Why can't they just use the same version of iOS for the Apple TV?

Because to do that would open up features they don't yet have permission to have open or simply don't want yet. So they are running a variant iOS for the Apple TV. Having two different version numbers helps to try home to the commoners that the software is not identical.

I'm just waiting for an update or a hack that allows the USB port on it to be utilized. I'd love to connect an external drive rather than always needing to stream through iTunes...
That will probably never happen, since the USB port on the ATV2 is the wrong "sex" to allow the connection of drives or any other type of peripheral (for example, you won't find a pre-made cable that would work between the ATV2 and an external drive -- that isn't covered within the USB spec). Besides that, I'm not certain that there is enough room between the HDMI port and the USB port to have both cables attached at the same time.

I haven't been able to see the descriptions of the tv shows and moves in my library for a while...now I can. I'm happy.

Haha I wish! All I use it for is airplay :p

Yea really.. I've never actually been able to home share with it..

I think my snarky comment has more negative votes than say, a post espousing the Taliban's treatment of women. Grow up folks. I buy Apple, you buy Apple...this childish fanboism is moronic.

Would you like a more contemplative response to all your bitching?

The ATV is a media consumption device, and completely renders one's DVD/BluRay collection useless. Sorry, Im not going to spend the 65 years left I have on this earth, ripping my collection and converting with HB. Furthermore, Apple's prices for rental's and movie purchases are just too expensive for me.
Are they evil as a result? A bad company? Are ATV owners/enthusiasts stupid because they dont share my perceptions on how the ATV doesnt fit MY NEEDS? No, and my comments never support any of those misconceptions.

None of the things that, for me, would really improve the ATV and stop me disliking it so much:

Why can't I pop a DVD in my Mac and watch it through the ATV?

Why can't I watch different video files that I know the ATV can play because they work in Plex and need to be converted in iTunes (with the quality hit that entails)

Why can't I hide MLB NBA and the other stuff I'll never, ever use?

The ATV is great if you only want content from the iTunes store. I buy from there sometimes but for everything else, I had to jailbreak the damn thing and install plex.

So is the Apple TV a better option now, over the Airport Express now that it can stream 16-bit audio?

What rate did the Apple TV stream audio before this update?

I fail to see how owning an Apple TV forces you to throw out your DVD player and convert all of your DVDs.

Dude you need to grow up.... let it go mate, you made the retarded comment on the first page, you are obviously the only person still concerned with the silly downgrading system, because your here defending yourself.

You made a retarded comment, just own it and move along.

Cool, the photo "floating" screen saver doesn't repeat photos as often as it used to! (used to drive me nuts)

Also, has Apple added new screen savers? I haven't noticed these before:
Scrapbook, Photo Mobile/Holiday Mobile?

Maybe I haven't noticed them before because I always preferred "floating."

So you have a TV that wil play 480i and 1080i but not 720P?
My in laws have a new Samsung 3D (less than a month old) tv and it plays fine on it, and my parents have an old Sony (probably 1st generation LCD) and it plays fine on it, that sucker is so old it only has 1 HDMI on it.
