I really like the new Maps app - the way it looks and flows and the naming and text. There are lots of location mistakes and lots of missing restaurants and such, but that should be updated gradually, with help from users. Many things are already better that Google Maps, but, more data please. Work hard to incorporate the user updates as they come in and get verified.

I fear you're right. I can see this being viewed as a pivotal turning point in years to come.

Btw, The posts from apple map apologists are becoming increasingly bizarre.

Was he not alive when Siri first launched? I know so many people who don't use it because she doesn't understand half the things they say.

Steve would have never allowed this! (for real)

He'd have fired the group like he did to MobileMe

This backlash is far worse than MobileMe - don't u guys agree?

Maybe he is the one who should have been fired for thinking he could take over the world?

The maps app definitely comes across as a bit of rush job but I'm not sure how much choice they had in releasing what they'd done so far... the licence to use google maps has expired and I'm guessing the thermonuclear war against android has pretty much burned any bridges needed for renegotiating that licence...

Do we have any breakdown of the data sources? In the credits I get the impression that the map data could from openstreetmap with tomtom providing the turn by turn data but I could be wrong. How does the mapping compare to OpenStreetMap for the places where there are big errors / omissions?

I have to say where I am the maps themselves seem reasonably decent so far but a lot of the satellite imagery has taken a massive step backwards into Blurryville. My main complaint so far is the UI colour scheme - thin white roads on a pale yellow background makes them almost impossible to make out unless you zoom right in. They definitely need a darker base colour to make the roads stand out more.

Apple Maps was never going to be as good as Google right out of the box as it is a version 1.0 app replacing a version 6.0 app. Add to that the fact that Google are at least 5 or 6 years further down the line of map data optimisation and also have access to a massive database of business search results which Apple seem to be lacking at the moment.

I'd say 95% of the issues people are having are all in the back end mapping data and not the Maps app itself so with any luck fixes and improvements should just start to appear "magically" without any need for users to apply any updates.

Why didnt you warn us?

What I find incredible about this whole mess up is why on earth the tech guys didnt warn us that maps would be so rubbish. You have had months to test them, give feedback to apple and give feedback to us. Why is it suddenly all coming to light now?

Apple should buy Nokia. For both its mapping service and its patents.

Nokia is doomed to suffer a miserable death as Microsoft's WP lapdog anyway, so an Apple purchase would be merciful.

Is everybody drinking the same cool-aid? Maps is great ( not perfect but a great leap forward in day to day usability!)

Visually google maps on an iphone was mostly miserable and almost impossible to read street names on. What an improvement!
But the kicker is the turn by turn navigation ... Its the simplest and cleanest to use yet from anybody on the iPhone and it can be invoked by SIRI to boot.

I tried it and found it a joy. 20 times easier to us than my previous (and pretty nice) GPS application and IMMENSLY superior to the previous Maps

So what is the beef no street view? How do you look up street view while you are driving ??? DUUUUH This is a real world application with things that will improve but its Awesome.

And the three D renderings are pretty cool as well.

I strongly disagree with the tenor of the reviews and think apple has put 3 steps forward and sacrificed little of use from the previously mostly useless Maps. And if you were using a more feature full gps what is your beef? Free TBT and 3D and nice easy to read maps

It will get better and you will have google Maps soon, if you need them - but i GUARANTEE YOU that six months from now 80% of you all will be stalwart users of this new Apple Maps.

Superb V1 Apple - Im sure it will only get better , and fast -as this is the new frontier, right?

You are in the very very minor minority... Hopefully the submitted Google Maps app will save everyone.

I'm not saying Apple's first attempt at Maps was good. It obviously wasn't, but I don't understand why people like Google Maps so much? On iPhone, it is/was crap. Google Maps used to take me to the wrong place all the time. I'm reminded of the episode of The Office where Michael Scott drives his car into a lake because the GPS told him to:

Dwight Schrute: This is the lake!
Michael Scott: The machine knows!
Dwight Schrute: This is the lake! This is the lake! There's no road here!
Michael Scott: Stop yelling at me! Stop yelling at me! [drives into lake]

Plus, Google Maps for iPhone doesn't/didn't even have turn-by-turn directions. You have to keep manually tapping Next to get where you're going. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I also don't believe it had 3D (crappy or not) maps (Although, I think they're new app for iOS 6 will). Street View is cool ( was that on iOS 5? I haven't used it in so long I can't even remember what little features it had ), but it wasn't always accurate either, and how much of a head start have they had?. So I found myself having to resort to Mapquest4Mobile which is a free app with voice turn-by-turn. Then I eventually bought the Garmin app, which I'll probably continue to use until they get some of these bugs fixed.

I will agree with you somewhat. There are a lot of things that google left out that it does offer for its android devices. Such as turn by turn direction, street view and their new 3D (45 degree viewing angle). It's fair to assume that Google did this on purpose. Hopefully their new iOS app will offer these.

Look apple maps are where google maps were 6 years ago. It takes time to build a large database google has today

I dont think Apple could ever get all the data that Google has, with their search and advertising data and reviews etc.

THIS IS AN APP TO LOVE!

I don't want to sound totally unreasonable, but I think you're an outlier.

When you say things like the roads being hard to read.... Well, the thing is, Google has gone through years of development. I read an article probably a year or two back about the algorithm used to determine what street and town names pop up at what magnification (you have to look at things like population and how much certain roads are traveled). They even got into the font and the background color of the font (what looks like a halo). ...And then they have the visual pattern recognition OCR for their StreetView imagery to figure out what signs say (much of which is still in development).

So, it's not so much that Maps is bad, just that it isn't possible for it to compete with Google.

I'm a long time Apple customer. I root for them to be successful in everything they do. However, I'm getting the nagging feeling that Tim Cook is simply not hands-on when it comes to product development and testing. If someone asked me whether I thought Steve Jobs personally banged away on hardware and software to make sure it was perfect, I would say yes. That is the impression I had when Jobs was at the helm, given his reputation for being obsessed over the tiniest of details. If someone asks me the same question about Tim Cook, my answer would be no. There have been too many missteps since Cook took over. I get the impression that he is a delegator, not obsessive about details as Jobs, and is not a product visionary.

Cook obviously never launched the maps app and never used it for anything remotely taxing. This is a perfect example where the CEO - or anyone, actually - would have quickly seen many of these problems. Just type in the Eiffel Tower or Brooklyn Bridge and see how terribly they are rendered in the 3D environment. Jobs took pride in showing off the Eiffel Tower, street view in Paris, etc. with the old maps app. Did Cook show any of the software? Nope. He left it up to others. Just like he's leaving this company's direction up to others.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. What I've been trying to say in another post, but I couldn't have said it better. I think this is a serious problem for Apple moving forward.

Not going to be a popular sentiment around here - But Steve very well may have been wrong to want to destroy their relationship with Google.

This is a perfect example of why.

Those at the bottom pay the price.

I am sure that the ideology of separating from gouge drove this situation. The senior management "don't bring me problems, bring me solutions" is not always helpful"...

This is an example of a true apologist.

Apple does no wrong (and when they do they still don't).

Yes. I totally agree. There doesn't seem to be a singular vision giving the whole a cohesion.

It is well known that he was quite stubborn and wanted his own way about everything. And contrary to what is generally believed here, he was far from perfect on his decisions.

This is pretty good for a first attempt. Google Maps wasn't perfect from the start either. One thing Apple has over Google is the 3D maps. They are much more detailed.

It's cool there's a feature that lets you type in things to correct the info but I wonder how many people look at them and verify them at Apple. Also, I thought the info was from Yelp? I've seen address fields for large shopping malls that just say the city and country.
