Facebook Places Database to the rescue!

Facebook / Apple partnership on MAP technology! Facebook has many uses checking in all over the world. Apple use this information to build a database quickly!

A smart way to do this is to monitor where people dont follow the calculated route, and if lots of people get stuck with a particular road, flag it for review.

Do you remember the iconic Apple commercial from 1984? Big Brother? Ring a bell?

----

And for anyone arguing that consumers should report errors and it will be fixed.
Why should they do what Apple should have done?

You know why Apple Map suck so much? Because it used TomTom.

TomTom map accuracy is no where near garmin or google. Short tomtom stocks, buy garmin.

at least TomTom doesn't take you through back roads bc it "thinks" it is a faster route. Garmin GPS devices are notorious for taking you on the most asinine routes possible...hell it'll take you off an exit on the PA turnpike to cut through a farm via a tractor road...then once you've crossed the farm it'll put you back on the Turnpike.

i had an old TomTom ONE GPS many many years ago. then last year i went with a Garmin. it royally F*CKED up my trip to West Virginia so i returned it and got a TomTom. i swear i will never go back to those Garmin POS ever again.

who cares if TomTom's POI is only 4M and Garmin's is 6M. we clearly all have iPhones here. i always look up the actual address anyways, instead of relying on POI info on an isolated device

Completely agree. Maps is no joke for Google. It is a huge sector for them and with thousands of websites and various programs and software implementing Google maps, they have every incentive to continue to spend and invest into improving it. Apple has just gotten its foot into the door and plans to only keep this application only to their devices. How ever many that may be, Apple will need to outspend like crazy to even come close to Google Map.... and frankly i just dont see the incentive for them to do so.

Exactly. This is not going to be fixed with few sharp brains in CA. They need lot of resources. I think Google Maps has a team in India.

Looking in my neighborhood with apple maps I can't see the local McDonald's. Google maps, that's not a problem.
Did you try zooming in (pinching out) to see more detail. I can see all of the fast food in my area. But I did have to zoom in to see the names. I also see much more like the high school across the street. If you still do not see them then this could be the reason for all of the complaints and at the same time it is working great in my location.

Please report back your results.

On the satellite images you can't get near as close to the ground as you can with google. And I live in the heart of KC MO. Why?

I will add that turn by turn is stellar here. Tried to throw it off to and from work. Super quick rerouting and without saying recalculating. Love that.

It's not Google. That's why.
Bing gets closer. So your answer is its not bing? Brilliant.

Tim Needs to pull a Steve Like Steve Did when .mac was debut.:

Walk into a room of map developers and ask 1 question.

Steve: What is .mac supposed to do?

Someone: Gives a reasonable answer.

Steve (At the top of his lungs): THEN WHY THE **** DOESNT IT DO THAT?

And Now....

Tim: What is our Maps App supposed to do?......

That will never happen because Cook doesn't have the brass that Jobs did. Period.

Yeah, who needs accurate map data, high resolution satellite imagery and transit routes when you have ooooohhhh pretty 3D buildings.

Oh, and:

Actually this is what I got searching for Toronto. I sympathize with the people having problems, but it works for me and where it works, it's much better than google maps, it's not even close actually

You're the one that said "...as you can with Google."
I figured the answer was pretty self-explanatory. Different companies using different map data.
Now, had you said Bing...well, then I would've mentioned Bing.

I was just honestly responding to your post. But if you want to be a **** about it, that's your call.

Between the possibility of a Google Maps app and this, I think I can sign off of here now and enjoy my new phone tomorrow. They want to make this right so they will, things in their control first, other things will take time....possibly lots of it...

Enjoy the iPhone 5 folks!

How does it help to have more people using the maps?! Apple didn't build in a "report feedback" feature, so we have no way of notifying developers of the issues we encounter.

Are you kidding? Yes they did! Look more closely before criticizing. I have already given them plenty of feedback, believe you me.

You can access it by either touching the curled lower right corner (see the Report Problem in grey on top right) or, if the issue is related to a specific red pin location being way off, touch the small blue arrow button and a Report Problem button, no less, is quite visible. There you go, now get busy and become part of the solution!

:apple:

iOS Maps says there is a restaurant in my apartment block...there isn't. The underlying data is suspect to say the least.

They'll fix it by giving users a choice of free nav app (Navigon, Tom Tom, Garmin, etc.). Still, no gmaps...

Anyone expecting this to be 'fixed' within a week needs to wake and smell the coffee.

If improving all the data, sourcing and implementing much improved maps and satellite images was that easy, then why the hell was it not done before launch?

Apple has said on more than one occasion that it will not enter a market if it cannot significantly improve the experience. Well then why the hell did they get into maps if they knew they couldn't do it right? Did nobody on the maps team ever use the app they were creating?

I don't understand why Apple decided to re-invent the wheel rather than re-new their partnership with Google and collaborate with them on a truly kick-ass, updated map app. In today's world, I won't cut Apple an slack because they are new in maps. They decided to take this on, so they need to execute properly and not give us a slew of excuses. When you are sitting on a stockpile of $100 billion in cash, you have the resources to do this right from the get go unless you lack the will or there is something wrong in the management structure. My bet is on the latter.

You'd think that the wealthiest company on the planet would buy it's data from a good company.TomTom doesn't suck, Apple does for using them.

...

Clearly this was known about during the betas so why they would be under lockdown now is mind boggling. Is this really the first that the higher ups have heard about how bad the maps app was? Someone in the lower level is going to get canned for not reporting that to the people who make decisions

You have to know the Google Map app is sitting in queue waiting to be approved. Apple is just holding it back to give itself time.. I wish their was some oversight into the process so everyone could see whats in queue and where it stands. App stores are just a means of big corporations controlling the content out there. If the Google Map app gets denied for any reason I sure hope the FCC or somehow raises hell and investigates apples practices and sue's them for billions just like they did with MS and the whole IE thing. In my opinion Apple is much worse the MS ever was. At least they gave you a choice of a browser. Apple makes you use theirs one way or another, its still the same backend no mater what gui you put over webkit.

I hate to bring this up, but I'm pretty sure the maps app would never have been launched without Jobs using it to death and making sure it "just worked". Cook doesn't seem interested in personally testing the products his company creates, and that is a big BIG problem for Apple moving forward. The company is no longer being guided by a bossy visionary (good thing), but has transferred into the hands of a delegator (bad thing) who is leaving it up to his team leads to determine the direction of this company's products.

Now that Cook is in charge, don't be surprised to see more of these types of missteps.
