Physically Dead yes, visions and concepts still alive, plus in everyone's memories. He lives, just not in a physical sense.
Yes, but in the Apple sphere, he no longer guides the company the way he did. Tim Cook does not have the same singular vision that Steve did. And it's not going to go back. Ever. People need to stop whining about Steve not allowing whatever, because it's now a moot point.

I don't want to sound totally unreasonable, but I think you're an outlier.

When you say things like the roads being hard to read.... Well, the thing is, Google has gone through years of development. I read an article probably a year or two back about the algorithm used to determine what street and town names pop up at what magnification (you have to look at things like population and how much certain roads are traveled). They even got into the font and the background color of the font (what looks like a halo). ...And then they have the visual pattern recognition OCR for their StreetView imagery to figure out what signs say (much of which is still in development).

So, it's not so much that Maps is bad, just that it isn't possible for it to compete with Google.

Well said

Apple will invest in street view cars?!?! Doubt it

Guys we are f'd! :(

is apple going to hire a team go drive around and collect images and data, like google did?

they kind of have to....right?

there are alternatives to streetview but they offer nowhere near the coverage google does. You can check out bing maps coverage for a comparison

No doubt it's a tough challenge, but I don't think you're saying it can't be done, right? First of all, past performance is no indication of future. Second, Apple is really adamant about not having to depend on Google. And lastly, every dog has it's day...and that day comes and goes. Look at Nokia & Yahoo. Why should Google be any different? Even Apple. I believe that all companies, even great companies, have a window of opportunity, and that window will come and go. For some companies, the window stays open longer, but not for ever.

True, its not impossible. I just dont see Apple investing so much just for a maps application. While Google on the other hand allocates a lot of its funds towards improving their maps. Hundreds of websites, software companies and dozens of smartphones implement google maps. I understand Apple's motive to stay independent, but I just dont see the incentive for them to match the same amount of resources to a maps application. Google Maps is a HUGE sector for google, maps for Apple....not so much. But then again, anything is impossible. I'm just giving my opinion.

Tim Needs to pull a Steve Like Steve Did when .mac was debut.:

Walk into a room of map developers and ask 1 question.

Steve: What is .mac supposed to do?

Someone: Gives a reasonable answer.

Steve (At the top of his lungs): THEN WHY THE **** DOESNT IT DO THAT?

And Now....

Tim: What is our Maps App supposed to do?......

I've been on the iOS 6 beta for the past few months, navigation is fine. It is the search that is not great. That and maps of non-US locations.

I understand it is the initial release. If they knew the product is not up to the mark, they should have standalone Google Maps available on App Store.

I heard Google Maps is now providing traffic info in developing countries. If Apple is not able to look up, this is going to be a steep learning curve.

If Apple is trying to master just hardware design & OS and ignoring software aspect it will become like Sony. Apple merely owns the eco system. There are millions of applications on iOS but very few of those are from Apple. Hardware design and manufacturing is not a hot skill nowadays.

Garmin charges $29, TomTom I believe charges $49, so paying few dollars to Google wouldn't hurt. Google can easily release voice based navigation on iOS in weeks. If you see latest Google Ad on the internet, it is about Google Maps.

No surprises there. If anything i'm happy about the flack Apple is getting cos it means awesome vector tiles are coming.

I haven't tried the new app yet but I can tell you google's
maps are from perfect I have spent several hour driving in circles
secondary to inaccurate maps!! Give Apple a chance they are a very responsive
company that truly tries to deliver excellent products, they will eventually
surpass the quality of google maps thats how Apple rolls

Except what a map app is primarily used for.
For me it is for Turn by Turn Navigation. My guess that is not your primary use. The Google Maps App was pretty useless unless you had someone setting next to you to do the turn by turn for the App. It has worked great for me her in Southern California.

What I find incredible about this whole mess up is why on earth the tech guys didnt warn us that maps would be so rubbish. You have had months to test them, give feedback to apple and give feedback to us. Why is it suddenly all coming to light now?

This thread has been going for three months with input from iOS 6 beta testers. It seems their early predictions came true.

I have faith they'll get the issues cleared up.

I don't, their Map tech isn't 1/100th what Google map's can do.

So far for me, and I live in a major city in the US, my Maps just well....doesn't work...streets are wrong, buildings are wrong, but my S3 ( personal phone ), seems to find everything just fine.

The Northern Ireland government have requested that Apple stop incorrectly labelling Airfield Farm as an actual airport, yet they still haven't fixed that yet.

How long will it take them to listen to the little people?

Why would the Northern Irish government care where Apple thinks the airports in Dublin are?

Unless they outthink and outspend Google, both of which should be within Apple's capabilities, this is where the company's traditionally conservative mentality is undoing it. If you're going to get into the Maps business, get into the Maps business, don't kid yourself that you can make a cheap knockoff that millions of people will be happy to downgrade to...

Completely agree. Maps is no joke for Google. It is a huge sector for them and with thousands of websites and various programs and software implementing Google maps, they have every incentive to continue to spend and invest into improving it. Apple has just gotten its foot into the door and plans to only keep this application only to their devices. How ever many that may be, Apple will need to outspend like crazy to even come close to Google Map.... and frankly i just dont see the incentive for them to do so.

It didn't do turn by turn with voice? :D

No matter how hard they try, they surely can't compete with almost 3 years of driving down every street on the planet.
Maps can't get much more accurate than simply driving down the very roads you want to look at...

I couldn't comprehend being in that mapping team, being shown a picture of Earth and hearing, "fix this map".

It's probably safest to assume that "under lock-down" means that all other work for the team is now on the back burner until these issues are resolved.

Come on guys (those who think Apple is really forcing the team to work 24x7.) I seriously doubt that they have their employees sequestered "at a secure location" under lock and key until it's fixed. There are labor laws and basic civil rights you know! This ain't China/Foxconn! (jk ... somewhat)

They'll most likely be putting in some serious overtime, but it's not like they can't sleep, shower, or eat a proper meal in the meantime.

You know why Apple Map suck so much? Because it used TomTom.

TomTom map accuracy is no where near garmin or google. Short tomtom stocks, buy garmin.
