Clearly this was known about during the betas so why they would be under lockdown now is mind boggling. Is this really the first that the higher ups have heard about how bad the maps app was? Someone in the lower level is going to get canned for not reporting that to the people who make decisions

Of course they knew it sucked. They just didn't care enough to perfect it. They know that their loyal customers will defend them to the death and accept whatever Apple throws at them, good or bad. Apple has hosed their customers.

Anyone expecting this to be 'fixed' within a week needs to wake and smell the coffee.

If improving all the data, sourcing and implementing much improved maps and satellite images was that easy, then why the hell was it not done before launch?

I'm guessing they'll fix Maps incrementally, several updates. For me Maps isn't a game changer as I'm using Navigon and I'm pleased with it.

I'm assuming Samsung's ad agency are already on the case preparing a map-centric android vs. ios6 campaign.

How many beta testers were there for ios6 anyway? Did no-one tell apple the maps/app were useless? or did apple just not care?

Google maps aren't perfect as it is, so to come straight in and replace the app outright... well, it ought to have been pretty good. And they said it would be pretty good.

But it isn't. They just bought shiny data for the showcase and left the rest of the world covered with whatever half-arsed cheapo data sets and satellite pics they could get hold of.

And now it'll be fatuous "we're working to make it even better" messages until people stop moaning. They learnt how to do this with MobileMe and saw no drop off in hardware sales. I'm sure the same will be true of this debacle.

I have faith they'll get the issues cleared up.

This is an exmple of Apple using its faithful as simple guinea pigs!

In the past, Apple could've been counted on to release bullet proof apps but those days are long gone and with Jobs gone, there's nobody there to clean up house. What a farce! Anything goes so long as they can sell more hrdware even if the apps are full of bugs.

This thread has been going for three months with input from iOS 6 beta testers. It seems their early predictions came true.

I was going to point out that thread also, but for another reason : for months we've been discussing how bad the maps are on iOS 6 as most of us who've had access to the Beta have witnessed. People kept saying : "It's just the beta data, wait till release, they'll flip the switch and all will be better". Well here we are, 3 months later and no switch has been flipped as anyone who knows about software development knew. What we were seeing back then was the production data set. There was no reason for it not to be.

The worse part ? It seems Apple hasn't really listened to feedback and hasn't fixed the most glaring issues with their mapping solution. Moving forward, that doesn't give me a lot of confidence in them issuing "quick fixes" and I doubt their team is "under lockdown" now anymore than they were months ago when all these reported issues were first... well... reported.

Can you guys just please approve the google map and send those map developers home?

Apple had 4 years to create a map application and we get this.

This. And as I said earlier, TomTom hasn't been worth two ***** in years.
Really?

I don't travel much but when I do it's to bum fu$$ "in the middle of nowhere" locations, try Battle Pass, WY. Tom tom found it. Of course the local data is not live so that sucks BUT for maps and directions WITHOUT a data plan it works fine on the iPad 1 and even on the iphone 3GS jailbroken, seems to work just fine. And for $29 it seemed expensive but the maps will always be there.

This is my first GPS unit, other have had em for years. I do fine the entire layout of the app shyte, take you 3 clicks just to stop navigating and you can't just type in an address or coffee shop, you have to go through a labyrinth of menus. Remember Europe and a few years behind in 4G data access etc so Tom Tom will still be used. In 5 years they my be pushing up daisies with Steve!

Like antenna-gate?

Cook, Jobs, it makes no difference. Apple has always sucked at online services. MobileMe, Ping, iTunes Match not matching anything for a couple of days/weeks on launch and now these maps. People who really think "things are worse now that Steve is gone!" either didn't live through the Steve years or just don't remember them very well.

It's going to take time no one can just create an entire database of the world in one day.

Nobody even remotely suggested that. A project of this caliber had to be planned years ago, and Apple has probably been building their own Maps for at least a year. I'm surprised Apple released something that wasn't at least 99% ready to be deployed to the public. Apple Maps is an utter failue.

Apple should have release an Apple Maps apps. Long time ago as a beta test. And leave Google Map apps install. So by the time the maps is ready. Then it is time to say bye bye to Google Maps. What happen is they release it to the public real quick. Without giving people time to adjust.

I don't understand all the complaining. Why not get an Android phone to use as a backup when iMaps doesn't give you the info you need. Problem solved.

I hate to bring this up, but I'm pretty sure the maps app would never have been launched without Jobs using it to death and making sure it "just worked". Cook doesn't seem interested in personally testing the products his company creates, and that is a big BIG problem for Apple moving forward. The company is no longer being guided by a bossy visionary (good thing), but has transferred into the hands of a delegator (bad thing) who is leaving it up to his team leads to determine the direction of this company's products.

Now that Cook is in charge, don't be surprised to see more of these types of missteps.

Because TC is sales guy, supplies guy... Anyone else missing Steve? I do...

That was my point. It happened with Steve, it will happen with Tim.

I'll stick with the free map quest app for now. It has offered turn by turn navigation for a while now and it is free.

Agree, map is the least important for me. So far I love ios6, even my old 3gs runs better than before.

Love Apple but this yearly "200 new features" is getting silly now same with osx i never see 200 changes or even use them.
Keep in mind taking something away is considered one of those changes. So that is like 50 right there.

I keep posting about this because it just baffles my mind today. It's relevant to maps. I got called an "irrational Apple fan boy" today by my cousin for liking iOS 6. He told me he can't talk to me about Apple stuff anymore. This happened mainly because he hates the new Apple Maps App, which I agreed with but also said I like iOS 6 despite preferring the old Google Maps App. That's being an "irrational Apple fanboy"?

As I look at the cables in my den, bedroom, office, and suitcase I'd prefer they let this team go home for the weekend and lock up the executives who made the decision to not include a 30-pin adaptor or make them available for a lot less than $29.

This new app sucks big time.

I had my first foray with it into New York City today. I did what normally works in the Google version. I had to visit an address on Spring Street and figured on finding it in the maps app in order to determine the closest subway to where I wanted to go.

I entered 149 Spring Street, NYC. I saw the pin drop and the map emerge and …. I wasn't in Kansas anymore, folks. Surroundings didn't look familiar and it had a car icon. I realized by zooming out that the app found Spring Street in Staten Island or in that general vicinity. Multiple attempts kept landing me in the wrong area.

I continually worked at trying to get it to find the correct address and what pops up but a choice I had to make from two Spring Streets. One of them was the correct one. And it depended upon me knowing the zip code in order to choose. I didn't know the code, but it was easy to extrapolate from knowing some of the many zip codes in the big city.

I recall many times when my automobile GPS got confused somewhere, it was Google's map app to the rescue for that final bit of route. Now I have Apple's map app whose source is rooted in an automobile GPS.
