That was quick.
Yeah but how many years will they need to fix that mess?
I didn't really mind the lack of mind-blowing new features with iOS 6, but making one of the core functionality completely unusable like Apple did seems to indicate a more profound issue.

the bad taste is already in my mouth and it will take years to fix that app. pictures, data, street information, google is still mapping stuff out.

i'll wait for the gmaps. this app has already officially been moved to the dead folder along with game center and the damn newsstand app.

I have a solution to this problem. Apple buys MacQuest and updates the MapQuest app with its own icon. :D

I'm serious!

Apple Buy MapQuest!!!
Apple Buy MapQuest!!!
Apple Buy MapQuest!!!

I use a stand alone GPS. I don't need no stinkin' Apple Map.

Smart. I never, ever use my iphone to do GPS guidance as it sucks up too much juice, plus what if I need to make some communications as I pull over to the curb or park somewhere? It interrupts the flow of driving and navigating. That's why I let the iphone be the 'communications hub' while my standalone Garmin does the heavy GPS work.

Does no one else care/realize that you are complaining about the GPS not working properly on your PHONE... I realize that the "idea" is really cool. But why would anyone feel Apple is obligated to do it? It's not that I am defending apple. But the maps app isn't the only GPS on the market, and if you really spend that much time using your phone for GPS you should probably invest in a good stand alone GPS unit. Everyone on here is b*tching and complaining, but in the end you will still buy the phone, you will still love the phone, and when Apple is done, you will either like the maps app and use it, or you won't like it and use another.

They won't switch back. They've jumped feet first into the pool, and now have to deal with the cold, cold water.

Unfortunately, that's a very likely scenario. I'm also disturbed why they left out 3D mapping for the iphone 4, but using 4s and 5 as exclusive. Especially Panorama for Camera was left out. That was disturbing as well. If they want to portray the hardware as the best in the market for smartphones, then good, solid software UI needs to reflect that as well.

This isn't a coding issue that a couple of evenings of pizza and jolt cola is going to fix.

I think it's both. The lack of data is a problem that will maybe take years.

But there seem to be some coding issues too - bugs in parsing addresses so that a search sometimes brings up completely the wrong location. Hopefully those can be fixed quickly with suitable application of pizza!

Just don't use the maps app to try to find said pizza...

Not for nothing, but the actual GPS chip works fine. That's not the issue.

Besides, it's 2012. No one should have to carry five different devices.

MapQuest is also using OpenStreetMap data, if that is of any consolation. ;)

One really has to feel at least a little bad for the teams working on this. It's probably been just been pure chaos trying to get it ready, and now the whole world is mocking their work as unfinished.

Yes, I understand it's ultimately Apple's fault for not waiting to revise maps or whatnot, but the team can't help but to see some of the commentary going down.

Otherwise, I will say that the errors have made my day as something to watching some of the hilarious computer-generated 3D errors and such. I can't wait to see Maps improve from this point on .. good luck to the lockdown team! I hope they let them out now and then...

Apple should buy Nokia. For both its mapping service and its patents.

Nokia is doomed to suffer a miserable death as Microsoft's WP lapdog anyway, so an Apple purchase would be merciful.

Don't make me laugh. I would'nt underestimate MS's Win 8 for Nokia and other devices. MS is waking up and have been around as long as Apple. People underestimated X-Box 360 before it came out.

Look what happened. MS had something Sony did'nt have in the PC/console/software industry.

Experience.

Yes, lets all carry a GPS around with our phone because Apple failed to provide a proper application (worse than that, they crippled it and removed features that were in it under google maps). Android navigation is amazing, I've used it for 3 years in 6 different countries and I don't need to spend more money on a separate GPS unit.

With the way Apple has been behaving I wish Google didn't develop an application for the iPhone. Apple will come crawling back if they're smart.

Have you seen the difference in detail from apple maps to google maps. It took Google years to get where they are now. Its no quick fix.

Don't get your panties in a bunch over it. I'm sure everyone will be fine if their map app isn't perfect for a while. There's worse things going on.

MapQuest is also using OpenStreetMap data, if that is of any consolation. ;)

So, we just need Apple to invest in OpenStreetMap and fix their data by having them reload all the new data from all the Satellites?

Apple to the rescue for Wiki Map! :apple: to fight google from taking over all map services.

TomTom only provides the data for the US. While it may have good road data. It's POI data is terrible. And while Yelp helps with that, they are mostly only accurate in big cities. Go outside that, and the POIs are going to be terrible. There's a whole world out there where Apple is relying on other smaller providers too. It is going to be a mess for a long time.

I have. Tomtom GPS in my car and have just about tossed it because the data is so bad. Roads are ok, and the traffic reporting is good, but it sucks for POIs. Even state parks and major campgrounds aren't on it. I think Garmin is better.

But really, I can't imagine why Apple decided to get into this. Mapping and data is incredibly complex, dynamic, and must require constant attention. Google has paid the price to do it right. Why is mapping data a core business for Apple? They should be delivering a solid platform and let Google and Garmin and others supply competing mapping services. This just seems like an enormous distraction to me. I'm sure they had that discussion, but I can't see it working out well.

This is just being blown out of proportion. Words like "completely unusable" are being used at the blink of an eye. I see a lot (not all) of people who are commenting just tried to "play" with Maps, tried to find stuff on it, and found these bugs and now they're like "OMG........... it's doing XXXXXXX, how will I ever use it!!!!!".

Few have actually used it (i.e. to navigate). I am one of them. I didn't have any issues, in fact, it was way better than the older one. Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to say there are no issues, but the perception of it being utterly useless isn't justifiable on Day 0 after just "playing" with it.

As for POIs and other stuff, give 'em some time..
