This made me speechless.

Is this the fastest a company has ever responded to a service issue? They must have gotten an INCREDIBLE amount of negative feedback.

The app says that half of my neighborhood is missing. I went outside and checked, just to be sure, and it's still there.

Put it back in the oven. It's not done yet.

If they'd announced it as a beta and included it alongside the existing map app I'd agree with you.

But they didn't. They threw the baby out with the bath water on this one.

In terms of built-in, free mapping ios6 is hobbled at present and there's no chance of a quick fix whatever apple would have us believe.

Only option - downgrade to ios5 and see if Google can provide a fig leaf map app in the near future. Also, I'm assuming iPhone 5 won't be downgradeable from ios6 so no £600 into apples's coffers from me this year.

I suppose. Passbook feels way more thrown out there than anything else.

The part I hate most, is the fact that not only do the maps suck. Google has their app ready waiting on Apples approval, but Apple won't approve them.

Holy piece of *****! I used it driving through Minneapolis today and the turn by turn kept telling me to turn on cross street while I was driving down a major highway. Obviously that's not possible. It also tried to take me on the worst route (traffic wise) possibly. Siri was Beta so I get that it was supposed to be bad. What's the excuse for this being so ridiculously bad? There's no way Jobs would have released this. I was shocked how bad it was. Really? Did they even test it???

Kind of sad that they have to make excuses for basically the only "big" feature in iOS 6. It seems Apple is slowing inching towards a jack of all trades mentality, and the products are suffering for it. Of course, I still bought an iPhone 5, but in two years it will be interesting to see what's available.

Spot on my friend! :)
I guess they should have listened to what Johnny Ive had to say in the iMac (2010, I think) release video: "...rather than just being consumed by reinvention, this is one of those fantastic opportunities to be very clear about what's right and that we don't want to change, so that we can put all of our energies behind improving those aspects of the product that we can make better..." :p

It was kind of clear to me from the beginning that Apple didn't intend their Maps app to be the be-all and end-all of mapping. It gives them ownership of map data they can integrate with other applications, that's good, but mostly I think they're fielding a solution to spur development among competitors. Apple has done this in other areas too.

Google's had turn by turn support in Android, and has been promising it for iPhone but has never delivered it.

Apple just stirred the pot to keep Google from sticking to the side.

It used to frustrate me that Apple would come out with great ideas like iWork, iPhoto, etc and then essentially stop development just when things are getting good. What I've realized is that they're trying to encourage others to innovate in these areas by seeding the market with ideas and providing a baseline competitor ("you must be at least this good to enter").

I read Apple spends the least amount of money in Research and Development than many of its competitors. Don't know if that helps.

I suppose. Passbook feels way more thrown out there than anything else.

But they didn't remove any existing "ticketbooks" to add in passbook. So whatever passbook is (even if it's just like the Beta had it, a big image showing you "hey, you'll have tickets and coupons here eventually!"), we've gained something.

Not the case with Maps...

Credit Apple for coming forward and issuing a statement so soon. How many tech companies have issues with products and simple ignore them, and NEVER issue a statement, or when they do is a bogus BS statement.

Still waiting for that statement on Mountain Lion battery life...

I wish the Apple Logic Pro dev team were on 'lock down' until it's a vaguely usable 'pro' application again on Mountain Lion. It's been weeks of the worst paid app experience I've ever had on any OS.

Cute 3D maps don't produce commercial records for a living.

As much as "Logic Pro" may suck on ML (I wouldn't know as I don't use it), the bigger failure of logic appears to be your own.

Your use of the word "again" implies Logic Pro used to work acceptably in your old OS, yet you upgraded your production system OS without testing to see if the app you use to make a living still worked? Oops. You do have a backup you can restore don't you?

You bet! :D
They really screwed on that one!

This mostly has to do with the mass media catching hold of it. My morning radio show which never discuss tech were discussing it. When they are, you know it's more than just underground tech blogs that spotted the issue...

It's hard to test maps worldwide compared to the tens of millions who just downloaded the update yesterday. Apple has a method to support suggesting fixes in the app, something I haven't seen from Google or my $40 GPS app.

Apple has plenty of resources to fix this. Google didn't build its maps overnight, either.

Maybe they could have just tested it, say for instance, in the US. You know, it's largest market.

kind of true

This, and the Google Maps app, should be excellent.

Choice, choice, choice. Something kind of new to Apple.

Also, check out this Tumblr to see just how bad iOS 6 maps are.

I google the washington monument and they don't have the pin over the actual tower either...but I digress.
As for the google pic where the actual college campus buildings are...is that something Google has done, or is that something that some person submitted to Google and then google approved it?
Apple says their map is in the "cloud"....so as people submit items, they will appear. Let's be real here, Google has had 7 years headstart on this....IMO, the only thing Apple should of had locked down was the streets....the 3d stuff I'm not so worried about if it doesn't work straight out of the box.....but they should of concentrated on the maps.

My Map Works Good so far

Hay, I actually been using my GPS so far I navigated to like 4 or 5 places and its good, I know Apple will make it right :D

Because people need to use it for it to get better. Just like google maps needed people to use it for it to get better.

But Google Maps was excellent when it was released. It was the only thing of it's kind.

Apple's mapping isn't half as decent as Google's, which has been around for over 7 years. There was no reason to abandon Google's.

Uh ? When Google released their maps, I had been using Mapquest for a good few years already. Google wasn't first to market by a long shot. They did improve a lot on what other free mapping providers were offering though.

Apple's mapping isn't half as decent as Google's, which has been around for over 7 years. There was no reason to abandon Google's.

The reason was quite simple really. They're trying to remove Google's hold on iOS.

Cause they don't already?
Not on that scale. There's tech press PR nightmares, and late night TV monologue PR nightmares. The first kind are fairly easy to resolve by fixing the underlying problems, the second are nearly impossible to dislodge from people minds. People don't want to hear that it's been fixed, because the jokes are too funny.

I think this is great! I'm am pretty critical of apple because of the price of their products, however I feel like it's almost a lose, lose situation judging from the reactions.
