I've just come across an entry for a pub that closed over 15 years ago. Where are they getting this data from?

And for real fun, try searching for Newport. Which one does it default to? Not the major city and port in South Wales. Not the notable town on the Isle of Wight. Not even the reasonably sized town to the north-east of Telford. No, it returns the Essex village of that name. Arrggghhhhh!

Wales doesn't count. It's not even represented in the Union Jack.

No one knows if it's been submitted or not. Either way, it WILL get submitted and WILL be approved, so this uproar really is dumb.

Apparently some one does. Or at least confirmed it.

Of course one will be submitted. I'd bet Google will either a) take their sweet time and allow all the bad press to linger as long as possible and then "save the day"

or b) submit one and Apple will take their sweet time in approving it because they know once they do - their map solution will be dead in the water until it can be re-reviewed/has major improvements.

It will be interesting to see how this unfolds. Clearly Apple doesn't want to look like they faltered (any more than they already do) and Google, no doubt, wants to position/maintain the idea that their maps are the best solution in the market.

Sorry but, I'm conflicted on this issue. If there have always been better free map apps than the old maps on iOS, then doesn't that mean that even if Google does not release a map app for iOS, Apple maps will be dead in the water?

If it's so dumb, why are you participating in it then ?

There's always one guy around to tell others what they should and shouldn't care about. Really, getting your experience downgraded and being pissed about is dumb folks, positivelyapple told us so.

We shouldn't care that our expensive devices get less useful going forward.

What did Apple end up doing with the Google Voice submission of a few years ago ? Was it ever approved or did it remain "in review" all this time ?

----------

Not on Apple. Only on Android. And your gloating is exactly what Google did; something Apple chose to break the cycle of.

Google didn't do squat, they aren't the ones responsible for the App on iOS, never have been.

Neither Google nor Apple confirmed that it was submitted so no no one knows if it was.

Nice audition to be a mod.

Really, I'm going to whine and cry about my experience being downgraded even though i know Apple will fix it and there are alternatives until they do. Knightwrx told us so.

Who are you? i can participate in any thread i want and express any opinion i want. I'd you don't like it, hit ignore. Thanks.

Yes they are. This is much ado about nothing. It's not like you're locked into using apple maps. It's about choice. Isn't that the mantra, on the Android side? Lol.

So when You click an address in IOS6 or an event location what application opens up?

...it just works?

Wonder why?...

Oh, you can submit errors to Google, too. The house I bought in 2001 shows the wrong street number. I have been reporting that to Google for years now. Still broke. I still have to tell people to use Mapquest if they want to know which house on the street is mine.

But does it at least show a house. On the right street? Because from what I've been seeing - houses are appearing in the middle of nowhere and streets 6 miles away in some cases ;)

there are alternatives to use until Apple fixes this. You manually input the address into another app till the built in one is fixed.

Do you think apple is going to say "sorry guys we dropped the ball and are shutting down all development on maps" or are they going to fix it based on the complaints?

Apple will fix it ? When ? Meanwhile, we had something that worked fine in iOS 5, Apple decided to change it in iOS 6, it has been in this state now for close to 4 months, with people reporting errors with it and it hasn't improved much.

How much longer must we "wait" to get what we had before ? Will it ever be at the same level ?

Can we discuss it without someone insulting us and calling us dumb which is against forum rules Mr. "just joined to tell you guys to stop whining".

If your only participation is off-topic discussion about people of the forum and their opinions, then no, I can also report you for inciting flames and arguments and being off-topic.

Maybe you should follow your own advice here. If a thread's subject doesn't interest you, don't participate and don't ruin the discussion for others. That's against the rules.

So why are you wasting your time? Report me.

wow, a cloud-based solution? That sounds very interesting.
But how does it work though?

They meant a "crowd sourced" solution, not a "cloud-based" solution. There's nothing new and amazing about Apple maps being "cloud-based", Mapquest were doing "cloud-based" mapping in 2002 and Google Maps' have always been "cloud-based" since launch.

So why are you wasting your time? Report me.

Properly teaching new users how to use the forums is never wasted time. If they refuse to learn, then yes, I will report your posts and let the mods deal with it approprietely. In the meantime, I suggest you give the forums rules a look and that you read RFC 1855, section 3 for one-to-many conversations.

No the question is very relevant - the comment made it look like you could not replace stock apps on Android but you can. Will I be able to select Google Maps (if released) as my default in IOS?

I think You know the answer to that...

I'm not sure. I just read it on the very first post. Check it out. It says cloud-based.
But, ok, what's a crowd sourced solution?? Can we as user contribute to the maps?

What? Never said you can't replace stock apps on Android. All i said was there are alternatives until this gets fixed.

Feel free to reply, I'll be banned in a few but will be back with another username

I know, that's what I was saying, the article as written is mistaken, everyone knows it's cloud-based, all mapping solutions over the Internet basically are. ;)

That's exactly what crowd-sourcing is. Think Wikipedia. It's not clear how Apple's solution is crowd-source though. Some of it comes from the fact it uses OpenStreetMaps for certain areas, which is a community project you can contribute to.

does that mean they have to use apple maps data even if google release an app for iphone? or could devs use google maps for their apps?

It means every app built with MapKit, which was the definite way to build apps on top of maps on iOS will use Apple's maps yes. If devs need to use Google Maps, it would mean that Google would have to provide a framework to devs for it, that devs would have to explicitely use that framework instead of MapKit and that Apple would approve apps using said framework.

In the meantime, it also means that devs that have built apps on top of MapKit for now close to 4 years would have to learn the new framework and port their apps over.
