How does it help to have more people using the maps?! Apple didn't build in a "report feedback" feature, so we have no way of notifying developers of the issues we encounter.

Apple will be as good at maps when Google is as good at hardware: NEVER.

The fact that we can't have Apple hardware and Google data and software working together STINKS, and no amount of "lock down" or "having faith" will change that.

Version 1.0 Map app for a version 6 OS

iOS 6 is nice but Apple's map app sucks. It will take years to get all the data that is provided by Google's Map app. I am sorry that I upgraded to iOS 6. I hope that they approve Google's Map app, and soon. :(

AllThingsD writer John Paczkowski says the developer team assigned to the Maps app is "under lockdown" working to fix the app.

What a load of BS.

This isn't a coding issue that a couple of evenings of pizza and jolt cola is going to fix.

It's a massive effort in data gathering that's needed to fix the maps themselves! And that's not going to happen any time soon!

will still be garbage compared to google

Only for now. Look at Jobs track record..he had a couple of failures, and even got fired from Apple before he eventually had a breakthrough. If they have gumption to stick with it, and I believe they do, they will get it right. In the mean time, I think this means I will buy the google app or the like.

lockdown? the maps team have it easy. Imagine Steve Jobs was still alive to see this? .....
I'm guessing something similar to the mobile me team. :p

But if the problem is bad dat and it is provided by TomTom or other companies, it is not easy to fix

It's probably bad algorithms, etc. Tom-Tom isn't exactly a new player. They have decent data, even if it isn't up to Google's standards. Apple is just finding out the hard way that building a decent map application is harder.

I must admit I liked how AllthingsD used the "restoration" job of the Jesus painting in its article.

Apple's Maps IS sick! And it's gonna get even better.

It's already leaps and bounds ahead of Google in terms of 3D Mapping image quality and landscape (Cars, Trees, Geography, Etc)

Couple glitches.... pfff... duh... they mapped and rendered the world.

I for one, think it is great.

I remember when google maps came out, and pretty much sucked all around for quite a while.

Yeah, who needs accurate map data, high resolution satellite imagery and transit routes when you have ooooohhhh pretty 3D buildings.

Oh, and:

lock down!

Lockdown is right. I need them fix as much as they can before my iphone 5 arrives tomorrow.

Positional location accuracy is poor. iOS Map app places me 800 yards away in someone else's house. If I shared my location using the "Find Friends" app, my girlfriend would think I'm cheatin' on her. Drama-rama would ensue....

I have no doubt they'll clear up most of the issues within the next week or so. And we'll be on 6.0.1

They shouldn't even have to update the OS as all the map data is pulled from their servers. They should be able to update it continuously without app updates.

But they also know their customer base well and that no matter what they turn out, people will still line up to buy it and make excuses about the shortcomings.

So true. This is why Apple could take dog crap, put it in a white box and it would sell like hot cakes. Top it off the fanboys would defend Apple on the iShit.

People can still use www.maps.google.com, not sure what's the crying all about.

The problem is that many apps (as well as addresses in your emails and noted and such) open up the system maps (Apple Maps now), and not maps.google.com, which is also not optimized for running on iOS like the old Google Maps app was.

The maps are not that bad, but could use some tweaking since first time out of the shoot. THe Navigation is cool but would like to see some different view options. Zooming out and pinching is difficult to do. When zoomed in no option to slightly zoom out unless doing it wrong...Overall though I like it

This is exactly right.

It's called reality - some of you kids need to look into it.

oh so cute that you believe that. As pointed out before people have been saying the Apple maps is crap since they release the beta previews.

It's like Copland all over again.

Apple employees were told to make a world beating Map app but simply lacked the time, resources, and expertise to do it. This will have to be canned. It's really is that bad - no 0.1 update is going to fix it. I mean, the POI are just a joke. They are nowhere near the actual locations in some places. This isn't 5% ready.

It's a pig's breakfast of the small mapping companies they bought up, some navigation tech hastily slapped on from TomTom and utter junk data from Yelp - some crappy 90s-style 'yellow pages' site. Scrap it. Don't make the poor employees suffer any more on this ill-concerived project. Enough is enough.

Map Crap

If Steve Jobs was still around this never would have happened. How come this app wasn't thoroughly tested? I tried to get directions to an address ten minutes from my house, was told they couldn't find it, yet the street is listed on the map itself!
