Like I have posted before - it's Apple's first foray in this new forum - mapping. They are novices in this domain. The customer doesn't understand this. In this world where things are fast, hot, now, instant - that's all we understand. And I don't blame us. If I go to McDonalds and have to wait more than 90 seconds for my burger, fries, and drink - I know there is a problem. God help me if I ever go to a real restaurant and have to sit, order and wait for food to be made.

Positional location accuracy is poor. iOS Map app places me 800 yards away in someone else's house. If I shared my location using the "Find Friends" app, my girlfriend would think I'm cheatin' on her. Drama-rama would ensue....
Way to cover your butt in case she reads this post.

Kudos.

"No, baby. I'm not playing around, it's Apple's maps location data that's playing."

I have faith they'll get the issues cleared up.

Me too. But I’m confident it won’t be quick. I’m sure I’ll be using the Google Maps app 75% of the time for now. But that % will decrease eventually!

It’s true, the customer doesn’t understand how hard this is. But... they shouldn’t have to! It’s Apple’s job to isolate users from such issues. In this case, I think Apple may well be doing the best that can be done with this tricky transition. But maps that don’t get you where you want to be (even occasionally) are not the same as good food taking 20 minutes more: we customers still have the right to complain, or to use Google’s iOS app instead. It’s on Apple to win us back to their own app! They will, I suspect—but not overnight.

:)What I don't get is apple maps obsession on the whole 3D imaging aerial view concept as being important. Who else really needs something like that besides Superman ?

It not like we all don't navigate the world at street level like 99% of the time.

Or they could have just used Google Maps. It just works.

Bad analogy is bad analogy

Not only are the satellite images old (my apartment building isn't on it) but the road layouts are old! They show the old road going through the middle of my building still!

The worst part for Japan users is that the routing for trains isn't finished! If I try to search a route and select train, it takes me to the App Store!

I want to know whose mapping service they are using? They must be buying licenses for this, and also, who at apple is vetting these decisions? I think they maybe did a deal for the whole world in America. Japan's maps are awful! Surely no one in Japan approved this!

Belgium seems to have very recent satellite imagery, changes made to my house in summer '11 are very visible.

Finding POI's is not as easy and not everything is included. I will stick to my TomTom app thank you. (No data usage is a nice bonus).

The Northern Ireland government have requested that Apple stop incorrectly labelling Airfield Farm as an actual airport, yet they still haven't fixed that yet.

How long will it take them to listen to the little people?

I guess there is hope after all... but is this also for none USA resident? or they'll just ignore us in Europe?

nonetheless... good luck!

Because a great deal of the data is pulled from the servers, as they make corrections you will see them right away. They won't have to issue an update to iOS 6 until they need to update the app. So maps, POI's, location data, etc can be updated as found.

But you are right it is going to depend on how much they are expecting Tom-Tom to assist.

It's a HUGE mistake by Apple to release Maps this unfinished.

Because what happens..? Users turning to Google Maps (when it comes in the App Store), and will never go back to Apple Maps, because Google works just fine for them.

So even when Apple Maps is done and really good, the users won't notice.

I think she meant Crowd based not Cloud based.

It is going to take years to refine maps and algorithm. Its like Garmin/Magellan/Tomtom vs cheapo Mio GPS receiver.

May be hostile take over of NAVTEQ on the books.

So many complaints just looking up maps, it will be brutal once people to use navigation feature.

Oh, one feature of Mio, right in the middle of overpass, it tells to make a right turn.

Eh, I don't think you quite understand business.

It's probably bad algorithms, etc. Tom-Tom isn't exactly a new player. They have decent data, even if it isn't up to Google's standards. Apple is just finding out the hard way that building a decent map application is harder.

TomTom only provides the data for the US. While it may have good road data. It's POI data is terrible. And while Yelp helps with that, they are mostly only accurate in big cities. Go outside that, and the POIs are going to be terrible. There's a whole world out there where Apple is relying on other smaller providers too. It is going to be a mess for a long time.

Yeh, this really needs to be fixed. It's pretty shameful... I'm waiting for Apple to get it together with this one - BEFORE I upgrade my iphone 4.

Off topic: Does anyone know where to check if there's a line for the 5, at your local store - is there a site that lists? Mine is SouthPoint in Raleigh NC.

I pre-ordered at 6am on release date, but i have an Oct 5 ship date (although I was quoted sept 28th while ordering - grrr - and I would possible cancel my order and pick one up locally if possible)

I have to be honest, all of these mis-steps with Apple, makes me a bit worried that they may be losing it a bit (since Steves death.) Someone recently reminded me of the big fail with Apple in the 90's when he was fired and I'm starting to get edgy about a replay here.

I'm really hoping not because I really dig the products...
