"We are excited to offer this service with innovative new features like Flyover, turn by turn navigation, and Siri integration."

Are you serious?

Apple: We are proud to offer innovation such as turn by turn navigation!

Crowd: OOOOOOOOOH AAAAAAHHHHHHH!

Apple: No one else have ever achieved this. This is a FIRST. Only from Apple!

Crowd: Woooooh!!

And btw I am typing this on my mac and I'm about to go get an iphone 5 but I'm tired of Apple pulling this ******** "Innovation ****"

since when is stealing ideas innovation?

How embarrassing is it for the core feature of Apple's new OS version to suck so bad people are begging for Google. Keep sitting on that stockpile of cash! It's doing wonders!

the question is why did apple even release this piece of junk when it's not close to being ready. swallow your pride apple and bring back google maps. you are not the best at everything ok? get it?

geez... as consumers we are the losers since we are caught between the battle with google.

Only for now. Look at Jobs track record..he had a couple of failures, and even got fired from Apple before he eventually had a breakthrough. If they have gumption to stick with it, and I believe they do, they will get it right. In the mean time, I think this means I will buy the google app or the like.

Fact is, is that Google has been perfecting their maps for the last 7 years. They outcompete any other map company. Apple will continue to improve their maps but Google will always stay ahead.

It's only innovation when Apple does it.

How long does it take to change the colour and remove a plane icon?

Being a GIS minded person I can answer this as best I know.

Updating the primary geodatabase that has this information is probably a trivial task (depends, some organizations require alot of authorization prior to making any changes, some just let it happen).

But a company like Apple will have multiple servers and databases to pull up the data. These changes will have to be propagated amongst the servers before the end users start to get access to them.

So for something that's so high profile, there's a good chance that it's already changed, but not cached and visible to the end user, yet.

For those of you saying that this is Apple's first forray into mapping, yes, up to a point. Lets not forget their purchase of mapping companies PLACEBASE in 2009 and POLY9 in 2010. Two years to combine everything, get everyone situated and start making some good product. I have no worries that the product will be improved in the future but for now they'll have to deal with v1.0 0-day woes.

Ill not be suprised if the whole Maps team is locked down for several weeks. And yet, Maps can get to google maps level in iOS 7 next year. 3D for all cities with more than a milion population. Triple the satelite photos and incrise the resolution of the landscape photos. And apple will need more than just tomtom to make that happen. Google maps is great, but i think apple know how to make it much better. They just need time and money, and since that last one isnt a problem, its question of time. But they worked very hard for this service, and they puted heart and soul, thats the most important.

"Not only does our maps app have 3D and flyover, but it'll change the world. Literallty. We are working hard to make our maps app more accurate by making the world a blurry, gooey-looking, melted apocalypse. It's...it's going to be revolutionary."

Have you seen the difference in detail from apple maps to google maps. It took Google years to get where they are now. Its no quick fix.

It will take Apple years to make Maps as good as Google's, no doubt. I'm on board.

perhaps it should have a "beta" sticker on it, and have a nice obvious button to report bugs.

Agree on "beta", but as far as the obvious button to report problems... they do...

I am amazed they even let the maps go live. It still feels like a Beta to me. They made improvements since Beta 1 but its still feel likes a Beta 5 in the Final Version. They should have labeled it as Beta, like did Siri.

How does find my phone work? Thru Apple or Google information. Currently the Apple maps shows my location 2 houses away from my house! This could end up like a bounty hunter gone bad show....

haha. exactly. apple can look into the future.. they are displaying the world after 2012

The maps are not that bad, but could use some tweaking since first time out of the shoot. THe Navigation is cool but would like to see some different view options. Zooming out and pinching is difficult to do. When zoomed in no option to slightly zoom out unless doing it wrong...Overall though I like it

Maybe now they'll fix the egregious bugs like Powell Butte Nature Park in Portland appearing nearly as large as Portland itself. Although I doubt they have any intention of bringing back the functionality they removed. Either way, it's still incredibly disappointing, and I won't be upgrading to iOS 6 any time soon, as I cherish my Street View (and accurate mapping) too much.

Apple needs to admit they made a mistake and pay Google once more.

If they want to do mapping, then slap the beta label on Maps and develop it for the next 5-10 years and see where they are. Maps is a good start, but they have years of work to do.

I could care less about the 3D stuff. The plan view is missing roads!!!!

And the feedback button is pretty worthless...try it. you'll see what I mean

I can picture Steve glaring at the Maps team and saying, "What the ******* is Maps supposed to do??" And the team replies, "Provide the most accurate map data on the planet." And Steve growls back, "Then why the ******* doesn't it do that?!?!?!" This would be followed by a prompt house cleaning.

That team deserves the worst, seriously.

The release of Maps was the most important software update in years. They messed it up irreparably. For any other target audience but the fanboys this is already history. Everyone who actually wants to use this will search for different software and never look back.

Also I just don't understand this disaster. They had lots of time, they had virtually unlimited resources. I didn't see this coming, not at all.

This. It's the first time I can confidently say that Jobs is missing here.
