Apple Just Increased Prices on MacBooks, iPads, and More

Back in 2015 a fully specced 15" MacBook Pro with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD cost me 364,800 Yen.

Last week a fully specced out 16" MacBook Pro with 128GB RAM and 8TB SSD would have cost 1,183,800 Yen. More than a million Yen... That is already a pretty insane price that hardly anyone in Japan can afford currently. I asked. The Apple Store is not selling any of those currently...

Yet today, that very same 16" MacBook Pro with 128GB RAM and 8TB SSD will cost 1,776,800 Yen. Nearly 1.8 million Yen! Seriously that's a 50% (!) price hike from one day to the next. Double yikes!

Who can afford these models?
And now Apple wants to introduce a MacBook Ultra line for even more money?
Who seriously will be able to afford these?
So few people that Apple will not make any profit on those higher end machines. They will all go the way of the Mac Pro...

I think Apple just killed the Mac!

Just looked it up. Xbox for comparison is up 60-70% on average since launch. I know, different segment, but interesting nonetheless.

According to my AI of choice (yes, that makes me part of the problem) Apple is up 15-25%, whereas Windows PC’s are up 15-30% over the same time span.

In some locations, people are trying. The problem is AI has become "too big to fail", much to the design & delight of our corporate overlords. I'll be voting w/ my wallet to every reasonable extent, not that it'll change anything for others, but for me it will.

people will accuse me with vandalism but i think at this point.. never mind. macrumors will just ban me lol.
 
The whole family is on M4/M5 Macbooks so we're not in the market for any new Apple devices for a while. I was curious about the new redesigned lighter M6 Macbook Pros, but not anymore if these prices are any indication of things to come.

(kinda feels like making everything more expensive so the worst people can have new toys isn’t going so well)

So glad I got my M3 Pro for $1,499... Now going for $2,499 from Apple lol.

I also bought an iPad 2 weeks ago I was planning on returning, but with the price increase maybe I should just keep it ($299 vs $449).
 
Pretty sweet deal now looking back on this price earlier this morning....the deal is now gone and updated pricing is $4099. Me thinks after this flurry sales are going to plummet as people simply hold onto what they have for a few years. It seems Amazon is one of the few that still has the old pricing left, along with some sale pricing at $3299:

I am glad I got the latest Studio and have been looking for forward for the new ones, and was going to get the base Ultra this time around, but I think it just went above my budget. $ 1,300 more expensive! Yikes.

The base Mac Studio always felt like a bargain to me compared to the Max MacBook Pro, but still. That's a huge increase. Looks Like I will stick with the Max for the time being.

I have an M1 Ultra Studio, 128 GB RAM, and 4 TB SSD. I *wish* I had a M3 Ultra Studio. I think you did very well here. I recently purchased a used MBP 16” M3 Max, 128 GB RAM, and feel lucky. That 256 GB RAM configuration for the M5 Ultra might be close to $10k, or, gulp, higher!

Even compared to the MBP M3 Max, my M1 Ultra Studio performs well.
I think the only area I see any measurable difference is in GPU rendering, using Redshift in Houdini/Cinema 4D. From what I've read and seen, the M3 Ultra closes the gap compared with the RTX 4090. Presumably, the M5 will finally bring Apple up to par in this respect.
Otherwise, the dual memory channels make my M1 Ultra a dream to use. M3 Ultra Studio would make me so happy, I might give thanks by praying, lol. M5? OMG, wait, I already made a religious reference.

its expensive here 699 now 799€
basic iPad 379-389€ now 489€

im glad i bought MB Air M4 in march for 869€

The iPad apps I used for years going to subscription and wanting $$$, bugging me constantly for it was a big factor in me going back to pen and paper.

Japanese Campus paper with a Japanese made Uniball Jetstream Lite refill has been absolutely wonderful to write with. Doesn't cost a sub and I don't have to charge it, and I remember it a lot better than when I type out my notes.

Apple themselves don't know if they could have done better by raising the prices more or raising them less. Their decision is better informed than anyone else's, but exactly how this plays out isn't certain to anyone. This is a message board, and thus the discussion. If you don't want it, then sell it used for $350. You'll make money. Don't fall prey to the endowment effect.

If you have a Costco Membership and looking to score some Apple computer, the Macbook Pro M5 (not the Pro) 14 inch 1 tb / 16 is on sale for $1,549.99. Sale ends tomorrow and price after tomorrow will go up to $1749.99. Still would be cheaper than buying directly from the apple store at $1,999

I feel like posters are overestimating how much that will help. Customers are upset with the company, not the CEO.

Some people still think his name is Tim Apple. Most people won’t even know John Apple’s name for a few years.

Agree this is a BIG money grab…. Sad part is the consumer is getting absolutely nothing for the price increase. We are literally paying a premium for products to cover the collateral damage created by the silicon industry’s AI gold rush.
