Apple just did what every business does. Maximize profits.
The iPhone 3GS profits dropped big time once the iPhone 4 leak was out. This way Apple tried to maximize the iPhone 4 profits using 3 different launches:

The initial iPhone 4 launch
iPhone 4 on Verizon launch
White iPhone 4 launch

Very smart Apple!

He likes to listen to himself talk. The number of people who do what he's suggesting is fairly small. Same with those that make the argument about Android users. Somehow people think that every time HTC, or one of them come out with a new handset, everyone that owns one will run out and get the newest one. It was a smart thing to do - there isn't the normal June/July push for the new iPhone this year so they did something to help out their bottom line.

Apple will have launched a new variation of the iPhone, and a new iMac in the same quarter...should keep investors happy and keep the stock price climbing. If they didn't do that this quarter, people would start getting worried because Steve is sick and Apple didn't have a latest and greatest besides an upgraded computer.

Capitalism at work...a fool and his money is soon parted.
All those tax refunds are going to get blown to have the latest and coolest.

But I also wouldn't be surprised if there is something in this legally since the original orders allowed people to select black or white iPhone 4 when it launched last year. If Apple didn't supply it, they would get sued and have to shell out money in legal fees and settlement costs because they failed to deliver on a promised product.

I'm sure there are still spiteful people that were holding out for 10 months...well now they are getting their phones, albeit late, but as promised

the thing i find the most ridiculous is there will be alot of people tomorrow who already have a perfectly good black iphone4 getting the white one, dont you guys got better things to do with your money? Instead of wasting it on a phone you essentially already have, why not maybe donate that money to a good cause, and not into a company that is worth billions and is starting to get scary with its big brother tactics.

A couple hundred dollars is irrelevant to some people, so there's no need to try to tell people how their money should be spent. Some people work hard and can afford to buy stuff like this. Why is it such a surprise?

Honestly, I held out until September for the White iPhone 4 - then I bought a black one - then two weeks later I returned it because I missed being able to make calls.

I'll be holding out for the next generation, but you can't blame Apple for good business.

People that are buying the white iPhone, even though they already have a black one, understand they won't have the newest iPhone for long. My mom surprisingly wants an iPhone now (she doesn't need to wait for the next iteration) so I may give her my 32 gig black iPhone 4 and have her get the white one.

Now that's a sweet place to be. Your mom is happy with her 'already set up' iPhone 4 and you get the white one, no new contract.

Wiw, you can actually equate buying white iphone to giving money to a panhandler? Your brain does not fire correctly. When you buy an iphone, you actually get a working product. When you give money to a panhandler, you get a non working device. A con is when they sell you something that is not as advertised, or they trick you out of your money and leave you with nothing. Is the white iphone that? Is it not as advertised? Do they take your money and give you an empty box? Don't be jealous of people who have money to throw around.

Apple was pretty clever planning out the iPhone 4 releases.

June 2010: iPhone 4 GSM
Feb 2011: iPhone 4 CDMA (+7 months, 18 days later)
April 2011: iPhone 4, white - CDMA/GSM (+10 months, 4 days)

Good for Apple because they are still getting a lot of sales. People are already lining up outside of the store. But it's good for people who were planning on buying an iPhone now anyways; now they have more options (8 choices in the US at least) than before.

It's also a good way to keep people busy with iPhone 4, and not worry about iPhone 5.

So yeah, OP is right. Apple was clever. I guess the OP directly bashed on how people wasting their money, but that's not what the point of this thread is. People can do whatever they want with their money. If my phone broke tomorrow, and I was to buy a new iPhone now, I would just be happier since I have a lot more options than I did yesterday.

btw, do you people really think Apple only just now fixed the issue with the white iphone? My guess is they have had it fixed for months and they figured a way to capitalized on profits by stretching the hell out of the iphone4.

I guarantee Apple gives a greater percentage of profits to charity than you give percentage wise of your income.

Think about it. Iphone 4 released last summer, 6 months later vzw iphone 4 comes out, and now a couple months later the white iphone. I find it funny apple has capitalized so much by the timing of their releases. And i laugh at the people clamoring for a white iphone as honestly its just a novelty imho, all you people buying one tomorrow are pretty dumb for pushing your upgrade further back by taking part in apples game. BTW, i am not an apple basher or hater as i have a mbp, and iphone4.
