This thing has so much potential to be massive. I can't wait to get one.

You might be falling for the hype that Apple is trying to create with this story, by making it seem as if this is such a magical device that it requires such security.

Can't imagine a paparazzi standing on a roof trying to take a picture of this through a telescope.

Pathetic. I'm sorry, but that's the first thing that popped in my head when reading about the blacked-out windows. Who do they think they are? NSA?

Feels like a movie

The Men in Black sorry the Men in White will come for you if you let anyone see the secrete weapon apple is about to unveil, oh gosh its the end of the world technology, its a maxi-pad that plays music. Paranoia anyone.

To funny to watch but I am amused by the whole thing.

Has no one stopped to think that a lot of this was probably set up BEFORE the device was shown off? And that details of the set up are only now leaking out?

Don't forget that there were iPad apps, from select developers, shown off at the unveiling.

Obviously these agreements and NDA's were created and put in place well before the announcement.

Agreed, but then let me have 4 480x320 apps side by side open at the same time... Having just one centered on the screen is as lame as it gets. ;)

I hear you, better be a new upgrade OS with 4.0, on the iphone I can tolerate it but on an maxipad(i know I can't help it its just to funny) its just lame. :D

ugh

stupid tampad has not even came out and I am already sick of it.

I'm sorry, but I still don't get it....

It seems like Apple is creating a niche so they can fill it with their own product...

Crafty?

Indiana Jones

Its funny to think about people going into this blacked out room with an ipad locked to a stand. In my mind I'm picturing the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indiana Jones goes to get the golden idol and its sitting there on a stand by itself, all lit up. Someone make a photoshop of that scene with an ipad please!

Not my best Photoshop job but anyway....

I don't understand this...makes sense before the product is announced...but um...everyone knows what the iPad is now...it's shipping in two weeks...so why the tinted windows? I can understand an NDA and even keeping it locked up so employees don't get sticky fingers...but why are they still acting like the product itself should be hidden? Weird.

I agree! Apple is acting really paranoid...

Apple are masters of hype, but this is ridiculous. Blacked-out windows for a device that's all over their own website? What e-ver!

They make you sign NDA's for every black project even though you signed a giant one when you were hired.

You can always tell who's working on these type of projects

- black curtain
- taped paper on office windows
- team members disappear for hours at a time

This project is more locked down than original iPhone (M68)

What bothers me most about this is preferential treatment to developers. Why should some get the opportunity to fine tune their product while others don't?

Do we know where all these iPads will be situated? Perhaps that's Apple's concern - if everybody knew where they all were, there could very well be attempts at theft. I don't think it's as much a matter of hiding the iPad itself than hiding the location.

But if the locations -are- known, then I guess I'm wrong and Apple's just doing business as usual. =P

they're just getting people ready for what they really will be used for. 15 year old boys locked in their room doing....well...

"Henry! Why is your door locked"

"I'm playing with my iPad, Mom!"

"Well, don't play with it too much, you may break it, or go blind."

@Bodhi395: Photoshopped--I mean GIMPed at your very awesome request! I'm not that great at it, but it was fun :p

I was tempted to black out the room at attach bolts and chains as well, but that would take too long :D

Great move. I'm glad that we get one. Thanks for listening Steve!

p.s. Plywood for the windows and a new door lock was ok'ed.

Pixel doubling (for each axis) is a very, very lame way to spend the extra screen space...
Yeah 'cause there's not going to be a native Facebook app ever. Plus lots of things that people use apps for on the iPhone will go back to Safari on the iPad.

Nobody is going to waste their time with blown up iPhone apps on the iPad -- there will be oceans of native stuff very, very soon.

This iPad is going to be a complete joke. It'll sell units for sure, but it's going to be a fail. Windows users won't get one because they can spend $500 on a laptop. iPod Touch users won't get one because they WANT something small that fits in their pocket. It's going to be like the Apple TV or MacBook Air. It'll be a device that when you look at someone who has one you will laugh because they wasted their money. Sure if you have money to spend, why not blow it on an iPad or MacBook Air?

I see people attempting to justify the purchase of the iPad almost like, "now Apple tells me I should buy it, so why SHOULD I REALLY buy it?" And they are almost convincing themselves they need it. They don't really need it, but they love Apple and love Apple products, so Apple makes this, so it must be something I want. Nevertheless pre-order and buying something that they haven't even seen or at least read reviews of the product for. There is no way that a SMART consumer would buy this thing before even knowing half of what it does. Because Apple won't even tell you.

I'm not saying some people won't LOVE it or that some people won't have use cases for it. I'm just saying that it won't be as big as the iPhone. It'll be on a scale of the Apple TV or MacBook Air, which means it'll be a failure.

When you're the first company to try and open a market you're taking far more risk than the companies who wait and follow up with something of their own.

That's why, despite Microsoft's size, they are rarely the first company to introduce anything. It's a risk they would rather let other companies take. After examining the innovation of other companies, MS throws some of it's vast resources into basically copying and adding a few small ideas of their own. After that, MS uses their market dominance and huge advertising to take share away from the innovators.

People criticize Apple for being so secretive, despite the fact that there are a shortage of companies that bother to innovate anymore.

Sony, HP, Dell, MS, Lenovo, just about every other electronics manufacturer are now preparing their own versions and I imagine that they are willing to pay a good amount of money to get their hands on an iPad.

If Sony had been smart, if Sony had been a company that emphasizes innovation and creating new products their customers will love, Sony would have realized that the next logical step in the evolution of the Walkman was for the Walkman to become an MP3 device. Sony was smart enough to start making portable CD players and call them Walkman.

If so many companies weren't sitting around waiting to see what Apple does next, Apple wouldn't need this level of security.

It's pretty obvious to me that this is some pretty sharp marketing on the part of Apple. Shroud the thing in in even more secrecy. Make it look as if it's something out of a complex spy novel. Darkened windows.. ooohhhh, Has to be tethered to an immovable object.... Oh My God  Give up your first born if you let anyone peek at it!! Nooooooooo!
I think it's brilliant! Most of the public hasn't a clue, so when they read this stuff they'll think it will be even more special than it is.
Sure, everyone knows about it, it's been seen and used. Big Deal. But.... this will give it just a bit more mystique until April 3. Can't hurt. Look at the buzz this is generating even here.

I think many underestimate Apple's marketing genius. Yeah, they have great products, but they also know how to market them well.
