Count me as one of the many who immediately found Apple's continued secrecy about the iPad to be ridiculous. It makes no sense to be this secretive just 2 weeks before the launch of the device.

At this point they should probably have a demo unit available at every retail store.

The bigger Apple gets, the more arrogant and obnoxious they seem to be getting as well. And to think that people used to complain about Microsoft's heavy handed tactics - Apple just does it with a bit more finesse.

Front Facing Camera

It´s been a while since the last "Oh, and one more thing..." quote from Apple / Jobs...

Having it on Apple´s website April 3rd with the front facing camera announcement on the iPad would be awesome and definitely will make more instant buyers.

Something is up, if this article is actually true (with the black out curtains and everything)

There must be something huge they are hiding.

Hide something until launch, then unveil it so your stock shoots around the moon.

I wish I had the money to invest in aapl

This iPad is going to be a complete joke. It'll sell units for sure, but it's going to be a fail. Windows users won't get one because they can spend $500 on a laptop. iPod Touch users won't get one because they WANT something small that fits in their pocket. It's going to be like the Apple TV or MacBook Air. It'll be a device that when you look at someone who has one you will laugh because they wasted their money. Sure if you have money to spend, why not blow it on an iPad or MacBook Air?

Please, EVERYTIME I am sitting at a client meeting or at Starbucks, people ALWAYS compliment me on my laptop. "It's so thin! Can I look at it? It's so light"

That may be what you think, but you don't represent the masses.

And, wasting money is relative. For you, yes, for me it was worth every penny and so will the iPad. Most people don't have a clear vision of what they want their iPad to be. I know what I want and it will give it to me.

I reckon it'll be called "iPad", it will have a larger screen and run a bigger version of the iPhone OS, and it'll be available about April time...

...oh hang on...

That is why they are so secretive

I think it's because they don't want people discussing the few downsides to the product and thus possibly decreasing initial sales.

I've learned the hard way not to buy first gen of any product from any company. When iPad V2 comes out in Sept with a camera and the ability to run several apps at once, I'll be first in line to get one.

Any better comment to make

Welcome to the tiny, compact world of Under Apple's Thumb.

Given the product, the market and the competition, these measures appeared fully justified. By protecting their products Apple is also protecting the developers and their revenue expectations.

Now for the quality of the comment I quoted:
Go figure...

...And they are almost convincing themselves they need it. They don't really need it, but they love Apple and love Apple products, so Apple makes this, so it must be something I want...
I don't need it; don't think I need it; don't believe I'll ever need it. I want it. I have the cash. I'll have it April 3rd.

By the same token, I don't need an iPhone 3GS; a $30 cell phone with a $25 prepaid plan is all I need. But I want an iPhone because of its features. Don't underestimate the degree to which people will want an iPad. Not merely because it's an Apple product, but because there is a mix of features, price, and quality (which is where Apple comes into the mix for me) that people will evaluate.

And I think people forget the element of time. Just because Business Week is breaking a story today doesn't mean that the facts giving rise to it happened yesterday.

That's great news! If they want to keep it very secret, it means, there is something to hide. Can't wait until they reveal that something (as was YouTube in iPhone's case).

The reason for the secrecy probably has less to do with the hardware than it does the software. Presumably the devices these developers have are still running a buggy beta OS that Apple would rather the general public not hear about so they can avoid all of the "OMG the iPad OS is buggy. FAIL." info that would inevitably spread.

Weakest link in the chain...

Does the NDA cover transport arrangements? I mean, a courier van with blacked out windows and a great big chain tethering it to the road itself would be a bit of a giveaway...

This is ridiculous, 2 weeks away from launch, after the keynote and all the free publicity Apple is already enjoying.

I mean, I love :apple:, having switched over 2 yrs ago, but jeebus... It's a publically announced computing device, not a secretive nuclear warhead. Let's keep things in perspective

you know; on the day they unveiled this device I totally poo-pooed it (iPhone OS, no camera, etc.). I swear everyday we get closer, for some strange reason, I want one more. It's about to the point now that I'm trying to rationalize buying two of them to my wife. HAHAHAHA. If it is released with a camera, I might just explode. Hahaha.

I agree, people compliment. Of course it's thin. Very cool. But do they buy it? Isn't the MacBook Air the least popular Mac? I wonder how many people complimenting your MBA have bought one.

I admire people who do know what they will use it for. I'm just talking about the many more people who are trying to justify it as if they don't really want it or need it but think they need it and buy it for that reason.

I have to agree with many here.

A Device with Photo's all over the net, a public world launch, videos on youtube from people messing with it at the launch party.

But it's in a blacked out room.

Ok, understandably you don't want them waving them about and going "Look what I have, and it's not even out for another few weeks"

But somethings fishy about it.

Either something extra and good is going to suddenly appear, or there's a problem they are desperatly trying to sort out before launch and we all find out.

This is just standard practice. Software is locked by a hardware key that has to be kept locked away separately from the software. They only give pre-release hardware and software to companies that have a lot to lose if it leaks. There is a reason why we never hear about leaks even though dozens of companies have access to all of Apple's pre-release stuff. Most employees of these companies don't even know their company has pre-release software or hardware.
