I literally bought a macbook air on the education store yesterday. Do you think if I called they'd give me the deal? The laptop is still in the box so I could return it.
Definitely. The standard return window is 14 days, and with a big enough fuss you can push that out longer. I’d return it and get a new one at the discounted rate, plus free AirPods!

I just bought it end of may that’s like 2.5 weeks ago through student discount, just called apple and the agent said no…. anyone in similar situation?

free AirPods alongside purchases of select Macs and iPad models.

Be careful with those ears (doesn't apply only to AirPods, though):

AirPods causing tinnitus?

That’s more like bad hearing habit than anything else, like blasting every music to the maximum volume possible for unknown reasons, and then blame AirPods afterwards.

So now the choice is M1 Air or M1 ipad pro.
I’d say iPad Pro if you have been waiting long enough. Also ipads can’t replace a Mac. With the new design coming for the MacBooks I think it’s not a good choice to get any macbooks atm. So what I’m suggesting is get both lol.

Do you expect a new design? I’ve seen some topics here but can’t really tell what the new design is.

Absolutely. I was hoping they would include the Mini this year since I have been in the market for one. With the free AirPods promotion, student discount, 3% off (Apple Cash) with the Apple Card, and best of all, the sales tax free weekend my state has the first weekend in August, I’ll be picking it up then. Gotta stack those offers, discounts, and incentives!

If you want to stack more discounts, Target is selling $100 Apple gift cards and you get a free $10 Target gift card. If you have a Target RedCard that's just $95.50 for the $100+$10, and if you have Target circle you get 1% back when you spend that $10 gift card. Better deal than the 3% using Apple Card.

Just make sure to only purchase one at a time.

Is the school year drastically different in North America (than UK/Europe)?

Because here, school hasn’t even finished for the summer holidays yet (a few weeks to go), let alone start planning a computer purchase for back to school…
Typically, the US primary and secondary school year is late August to late May/early June. Post-secondary (ie university and college) usually are late August to early May, though there’s some more variety (some universities take an extended winter break, some universities begin in September, some are on trimester plans).

think FPT on YouTube covered that. It’s more flat design similar to the macbook pros but flatter. Also there were some talks with mini leds for the new MacBook pros, rumors suggesting q4 now for release, no guarantee though.

Ok, so serious question, would anyone recommend the new iMac or Mac mini? looking at getting 16 gb of ram, the internal storage is fine at base settings as external drives are sufficient. I am looking at something to edit videos on mainly, but I don't know if the price difference is justified, I looked at the cost of the mac mini with the RAM upgrade, the apple keyboard and magic mouse, along with a bigger 4k monitor and a webcam and its still like $200 less than the Middle tier iMac with the RAM upgrade, I get the iMac is all in one, you get the less USB C ports with the Mac Mini, but specwise its the same computer, so is the touch ID and the iMac's screen, upgraded audio, Mic configuration, and new webcam worth that $200 difference? And both get the airpods.

Seems it's not that simple. Read through the posts.

Look, I'm all for ”using the ears” via headphones and other means of listening to music, it's just that I think we should not take our hearing for granted.

Take audio/music breaks and ”listen” to the ears – if they start to feel ”full” or ”hollow” or make a constant ”whooshing” sound when in a quiet place, it's probably best to take a break from audio until the ears feel normal again.

One individual's ears might be different to another's and different leves of fatigue makes our ears more sensitive to damage. To make general statement such as ”long term audio exposure is fine as long as it's under 70-90 dBA” I think is dangerous since how audio and music affect the ears depend on not only the volume of the music, but also the frequency (higher frequencies seems more likely to be damaging ) and also the most important one I think: the current state of the ears. If the ears are fatigued from long term exposure to audio it might not be OK to listen to music that's under that general 70-80 dBA volume recommendation anymore.

I just don't want people to end up here where I unfortunately have spent a lot of time the recent months – and I didn't listen to loud music: https://www.tinnitustalk.com/

Of course my experience is anecdotal, but I'm definitely not alone.

And @Maconplasma feel free to disagree, but it would be nice to hear the reason for it. :)

Smart Apple.

I was considering getting a Pixel this fall when my iPhone 11 is paid off... probably will just get an iPhone 13 now as my wife and I are both upgrading to an M1 Mac.

Given that new macs are imminent, I’d say ignore this deal and go for better mac is a better solution, especially when you don’t absolutely need a new Mac now. I wanted to get one of those M1 MacBook air for a while now, but given the timing, I choose to wait instead of jumping the ship. iPad and my PC can get my job done just fine so no need to get a new MacBook Air.

Not according to Craig Federighi 🤣

That’s a little out of context. The context is macOS vs iOS, not macOS vs Microsoft or macOS vs ChromeOS. If I say that air travel is safer than automobile travel, that doesn’t mean automobile travel is dangerous, per se, nor does it say anything about automobile travel to any other sort of transportation other than air.

If I were to say that macOS enables a greater degree of privacy than Windows or ChromeOS, it can still be less than the degree of privacy granted by iOS. Yet, macOS could still be held to be generally secure and generally private to most people’s standards (if not Apple’s exacting standards). For that matter, Windows is generally secure and generally private*, especially relative to the bad old days of IE6 running on Windows XP.

(* Asterisk because I’m not sure how much of Windows 10’s privacy issues have been resolved, though it’s obvious that third party software can’t do as much of the shady stuff as it did in the bad old days, back when a new PC could get hosed by some worm within minutes of going online.)

This seems like a good way to upgrade my iPad Air to the new 11 inch Pro for minimal cost by selling the AirPods!

So no new MacBook Pro until this promo is over?
That's a common enough pattern for Apple, going back decades.

On the occasions when the new laptops are announced before the end of the promo, they've always been excluded from the promo.

The Back-to-School promo is a way for Apple to clear some inventory (or keep the production line a little more busy), often give the parents a little price break, and give the kids a free toy in specially marked packages.

As soon as the WWDC keynote finished without mention of new MBPs, it was clear that Apple would wait until the September/October events, following their usual pattern, despite how much both you and I would like them to arrive sooner.

I hope this doesn’t mean that the new Pro’s will launch in October i.e. after the current Back to School promo is over.

This is what I've been waiting for! Now I just need to figure out whether to sell the Airpods or keep them...
