Apple today launched its annual "Back to School" promotion for college/university students in the United States and Canada. This year's promotion offers a free Apple gift card with the purchase of an eligible Mac or iPad, rather than free AirPods like last year. Apple is also offering students 20% off AppleCare+ plans during the promotion.

Apple is offering a $150 gift card with the purchase of any new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, or iMac model, and a $100 gift card with the purchase of any new iPad Pro or iPad Air model, with full terms and conditions outlined on Apple's website. The gift cards can be used towards the purchase of Apple products, accessories, App Store apps, subscriptions to services like Apple Music, iCloud+ storage, and more.

The free gift card is in addition to Apple's standard educational discounts, with students able to save around $50 to $100 off a Mac or iPad.

The list of eligible devices includes the new 13-inch MacBook Pro with the M2 chip that became available to purchase at Apple Stores starting today, and the new MacBook Air with the M2 chip will also be eligible when it launches next month.

The offer is available through Apple's online education store or at Apple retail store locations for students attending or accepted to a higher-education institution, faculty and staff of higher-education institutions, parents purchasing on behalf of an eligible student, employees of a K-12 institution, and select others.

The promotion ends on September 26 in the United States and Canada.

Update: Apple's Back to School promotion has also gone live in some Asian countries such as India, Singapore, and Thailand, with Apple offering free second-generation AirPods with the purchase of an eligible Mac or iPad.

I can’t wait to

In-store they sometimes check for education ID.

They never check online.
My husband's been back in school for the past few years and we use the educational discount online, and choose in-store pickup. We've bought many products this way, and every single time when we go to pick it up we always make sure to bring my husband's school ID and a printout of his current class schedule that clearly shows his name, the university name, the date, etc. They have never asked us for any kind of proof, ever. We even volunteer to show them his ID and schedule and they just wave it off in a nice way.

Edited to Add: of course this may not be the case in every Apple store! Just our experience.

Apple should have included an Apple Polishing Cloth with this back to school offer. The world needs it. I’m sure it would have made a lot of people happy.
Yay (May I call you Yay?)

I agree. They should also include the Mac Pro in the Back to School promo and throw in the wheels so students can roll it to class.

You'll need to cancel and re-order as the gift card is 'triggered' when you have it on the original invoice. No way to add it to an existing order number, unless you want to try calling Apple (potentially a huge waste of time + frustration).
That’s what I have done.

I am not sure you can do that, I have been trying to purchase a MBP-16 since this morning with hopes to apply the $150 gift card right away but it’s not working.

The curious thing is that it says “-$150 promotional” in the bag, but you are charged the whole amount in the payment screen. 🙄😡
Unless you choose Apple Card with monthly payments at 0% interest.

You can do it online without any gimmicks. And from what people say, some retail stores don't ask for proof either.
I don’t remember what I had to do at first as a teacher, but it’s now in my account and I don’t have any issues with purchases.

It's not limited to current students. My alma mater's campus store gives these kinds of Apple discounts/promos to alumni association members, too. So if you're a graduate, double-check your school's policy.

well ... no gift cards yet on Czech Apple store website ... last year we also got the AirPods 2 ...

a 5th gen iPad Air with M1 would come handy

One time I got a government discount and they didn’t even bother asking for proof. It was a solid discount, better than the educational one, it was for a keyboard.

It looks like the discount for government employees is currently not quite as good as the education discount.

What about orders placed at the education store in June and expected for delivery in late July-august, they are elegible for the promotion?
Call Apple. If the rep you speak with isn't able to add the gift card to your order, ask them to transfer you to customer service.

I just went through this yesterday. First rep said I would have to cancel and reorder. I didn't want to do that because the delivery date was 2 weeks later. Also, I didn't know how long it would take for the canceled order to free up credit on my Apple Card (already has a Studio on it).

I called again last night. Rep I spoke with said she couldn't do it but would transfer me to "customer service." Customer service rep added the gift card to my order without hesitation and apologized for the experience from earlier in the day (when I was told it wasn't possible without canceling & reordering).
