This is actually a good update for the Touch with the new A8 chip and upgraded camera. However, I still think Apple should have come out with 4.7 and 5.5 inch versions. Despite all the naysayers out there, there remains an important market for the Touch - namely, children. Tens of millions of them from toddler to teens whose parents have enough sense not to buy them an iPhone. They should market to them more than they do - get them into the Apple culture from the time they're two.

It always depends on what you compare it to. A 128 GB iOS device for $400 is a steal, an iPhone with that amount of storage costs $850. A 128 GB iPad mini is $600. Yes, an iPod classic was much cheaper ($250) but an iPod touch can do an enormous amount of other things compared to an iPod classic. It all boils down to Apple not offering all imaginable options.

I agree. It comes down to the lack of options. As someone who owns an iPhone, I don't feel the need for the ability to have apps and games on my iPod, I can do that on my phone. I don't like the idea of working out and having to worry about dropping my $400 iPod touch and breaking the screen. To me, the iPod Classic was the last one true to the original iPod. It was designed to be able to go anywhere, hold all of your music, and be able to take a little bit of a beating without worrying and it didn't come at a premium price.(Not saying it was cheap, but a $150 difference is a big deal) The iPod touch just feels like a lot of people that are shopping for a commuter car are being forced into buying a Porsche.

Considering that the iPod Touch is basically a iPhone 6 with the camera of the 5s, this is quite a deal. And also quite shocking that you pay 500 USD for a GSM chip.

Or they could have just continued with 3 options and made more people happy. Its not that hard. 4 Inches is perfect for many people. The demand will grow when large numbers of people upgrade from their 5's and 5s's.
Finally mate a brand new ipod touch! Discussions about this matter are over for me, now i need to save some money...

No 4.7 inch screen, huh ?
I guess we developers will have to support 4 inch screen for a long run then. Luckily, it's the same aspect ratio !

I may pick up the 128gb to replace my iPod classic. Honestly I wish they would just come out with a limited edition upgraded iPod classic. But I can always dream.

2.6m in one quarter is small business? If they made $50 on each device they sell that is half a billion dollars a year

I was hoping that they would do something special like extending FaceTime Audio to be able to call any phone number. This would have made the touch a viable cheap phone with the only limitation being that you had to be on wifi (which at least in the US is pretty much all the time). As it is, this is totally underwhelming and will continue to decline in sales IMO.
So basically giving consumers less reasons to buy an iPhone! Ha err yeah I can't see that happening.

It's an alright update, but I know a particular somebody on here who is going to absolutely crack it with the storage options on the iPod Touch skipping the 32GB option, and he knows who he is. o_O

The only A5 Apple device left on sale now from Apple then is the :apple:TV, hopefully that will get an update soon.
Maybe they've not included Touch ID to keep the price down

noted and i get what you're saying; spec wise maybe it's considerably better than your iphone, but the ipods have one missing difference :) - the ability to take phone calls... so don't you think cost wise, it's better to get a newer phone (assuming you don't have the latest/greatest yet). :)

There's no way I can argue that it's better, cost-wise, to get a newer phone.

My cheapest phone option is a 5c for £319 along with my current £5 monthly data/calls SIM.
Keeping my 4s for calls (~£5 every quarter) and getting the new iPod for £159, with a processor I imagine will see me through iOS 12, is a whole load more attractive.

Viewing it as someone still using the A5-fuelled and TouchID-less iPhone and iPad mini, this iPod touch update is amazing. £159! It's crazy good.

Admittedly, having the A8 in there does scream "I am the last iPod touch".

Apple today introduced the sixth-generation iPod touch with a 4-inch display, 64-bit A8 chip and M8 motion coprocessor, 8-megapixel rear-facing iSight camera and new colors: blue, pink, silver, space gray, gold and red. 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models are available through the Apple Online Store starting today for $199, $249 and $299 respectively, while a new larger 128GB model was introduced for $399.

The new iPod touch also features 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1, no longer has a loop attachment and comes with iOS 8.4 preinstalled for access to Apple Music and Beats 1. The 128GB and (PRODUCT)RED models will be sold exclusively through Apple, while all other colors and storage capacities should be available through authorized resellers such as Best Buy and Walmart in the near future.

Apple also updated the iPod shuffle and iPod nano with a matching lineup of colors, but no other hardware or storage capacity changes to the devices were made. iPod nano and iPod shuffle maintain their prices of $149 and $49 respectively and currently ship within 1 business day on the Apple Online Store.iPods have become an increasingly minor business for Apple over the past several years, with only 2.6 million units sold in Q4 2014, the last quarter when Apple reported iPod sales. Beyond new colors and storage capacities, Apple had last updated the iPod touch and nano in October 2012 and the iPod shuffle in September 2010.

**** yes!!!!!

Really a fan of that "Space Gray"! It's not even Space Gray, it's Space Black. I'm thinking the 6S and next iPads will adopt this color. Maybe the 6S will adopt all 5 colors?? That pink is a bit flashy for a high end smartphone in my honest opinion (seems gaudy and Samsungish :p) but to each their own I guess. I'm not going to judge.
