No, the only way of getting around the mail in rebate is to be a resident of Connecticut or Rhode Island where it is an instant-rebate at the point of sale. They just reduce the price of the iPod to a penny and so there is no UPC to cut out or form to fill in correctly. Post it on craigslist and you could probably sell it that very day ;)
Acctually, Apple has changed their rebate system and it is super easy. I bought a new iMac/Printer on May 23rd (ugh i would have waited if i had known!), filled out the online form on the 24th and got my $100 printer rebate in the mail on June 2nd. All you have to do is fill out a short form with the date, store you purchased, receipt number, and the purchase total then name and address where you want the check sent. Seriously, it was so easy.

I think this is a really good deal even if they release new MacBooks and MacBook Pros the day after the deal is over. I glad this rumor turned out to be true.

I mean, suppose apple suddenly decided to replace the penryn with the montevina in July, DURING the BTS promotion, how mad/angry would students be? It would almost be like apple is using students as tools to offload old stock so that they can prepare to launch the new models!!!!
I may be wrong, but I would really hate apple for doing that!!!!!!!!

Have a sale to move all the old crap out. Also, Penryn cpus are still used with Montevina, as Montevina is just the platform/chipset.

And be serious, do you think that the majority of students who buy MacBooks to get their free iPod are going to know or care that Apple released new hardware/

I wonder why if you get an iPod Touch, you get $299 off while an iPod Nano only gets $199? Where's the missing $100?

The nano is only $199? Why would they pay you $100 to take a nano?

Actually, they won't. My question is why do Nanos only get $199 off while Touches get $299? If a college student gets this deal just to sell the iPod on eBay/Craigslist, they can get the iPod Touch and get $100 more or whatever. Or maybe just make the rebate $199 for any kind of iPod (nano, classic, touch).

Does this exclude other discounts like the developer program hardware discount and / or student discount?

Somebody call the WAAAAHmbulance.

For those that are asking if you can still get in on the deal if you have already ordered/bought a qualifying mac, you have to have purchased it after May 20th to be able to get the ipod for free or discounted. Basically, if you bought it within the 14day period where you can return it, you can go in with your receipt (call them) and do a return/purchase so you can get the ipod on the same receipt thus qualifying you for the rebate.

The offer is ONLY available if you buy from the Apple EDU store. The standard Edu discount is still in effect.

 no way! I just ordered an iMac on Saturday and didn't see the option to get a free ipod. Is there a way I can qualify for it still????

Sure. Cancel your order and rebuy. If they've already shipped, and assuming you did not to a CTO, then return and rebuy. Your receipt has to be dated today or after, so those are your options.

Do you have proof of this? I purchased mine on the 24th.

So yeah, still waiting for any kind of promotion.. We're only 5-7 hours ahead of the US

As others have said, the UK ones is always later for some reason, usually around late July or August I think as back to school doesn't really get going here until then.

I used it a couple of years ago to get a free nano with my iMac, I knew the promotion would be coming up but they wouldn't say when so I phoned them and put my order on hold. They sent it anyway so when I phoned them they gave me the nano for free anyway even though the promotion hadn't started, you could try that if you're really desperate.

Personally I would wait as something in the range is bound to be updated before September, might as well get it the last day.

If you return it don't you have to pay the 10% restocking fee?

Sounds like a pretty sweet deal too me. I miss being a student when it comes to this kind of stuff... certainly don't miss the really late nights and paper writing though.

This sounds like a great deal. Unfortunately, for the first time in a very long time, I'm no longer an eligible student! Just when I'm about to buy a mac too...

Re waiting 'til the last day, it has 'while stocks last' all over it, is there any chance that they will sell out of eligible machines/Pods??

To avoid a restocking fee, do not open the box when you get it. Arrange for a return, then once it's complete, repurchase.

If you ordered from Apple, assuming it wasn't a config to order, you can return it to an Apple retail store and they'll return and resell on the spot with the iPod.
