Excited to buy my new MBP 17''... but why is the store still down? I dont remember the last time they announced what was coming out (on the website) but still kept the store down. Any chance they could be coming out or updating anything else?????

I'm new to MacBooks but getting one soon. Is it possible to replace the HDD in a MBP if you know what your doing?

I've taken apart and repaired numerous of PC laptops as part of my job but never touched a MBP.

Upgrading Ram and the HDD (SSD) are easy and do NOT void the warranty.

An easy site to go by is http://www.ifixit.com

All these announcements, i feel like Apple have given me a bottle of JD and i'm imagining seeing things such as 1549!! for the 15 inch pro!
I'm still gonna buy it, regardless now, i've waited a year already!

I wanted to buy two MBPs now I am possibly going to buy a single last model C2D and wait for the 2012 refresh. Disappointing.

I was an easy new customer... now I'm pretty much out. Apple would have been better off just working to speed up the redesign and delay this release. I can't see these as anything but super transitional and rev 1 almost "beta."

I still need a Mac though. My plan is to go with the C2D 13" possibly two or one and a mini to get me through. Bummer.

All it would have taken:

13" with decent CPU and solid GPU.
Superdrive inside.
I would have killed to have a black/gunmetal/dark alu chassis.

Price, glossy/matte, SSD, Thundercat, none of that mattered to me.

The 13" update is literally a joke. It's really like Apple hates the 13" size. They didn't give the 13" new processors last year, and this year, they **** on it again by not bumping the resolution.

I guess they're going to push towards the 13" MBA as the 13" of the future.

The available Core i7 is a very nice surprise. That said, I agree that they should have offered the 1440x900 screen. With an SSD, the 13" Pro with such a screen and a Core i7 would be very compelling.

Any ideas when the Apple Stores will carry these new systems? I just walked into my local apple store and they dont have the systems for purchase.

Thunderbolt!

Thunderbolt = awesome!

10Gbps, daisy chain, 10 watts power, compatible with every display via adapter! Sweet!

Noticed that too. Hoping either:

1) It was 7 hours before, and I'm misremembering.

2) It's a typo.

If the battery life for the 13-inch laptops has indeed *dropped* 3 hours, I'm totally skipping these.

NONONONO, They "Apple" just miscalculated how to messare the battery life on the previous model and had to adjust to more real world figures....You know sort of how they "miscalculated" attenea/singnal strenth relative to "bars" on aonther one of their products.....

EDIT: I JUST SEE THAT IT SAYS UP TO 7 HOURS OF "WIRELESS WEB".
So maybe the 10 hours on the previous model was say word processing with wifi turned off....????

Also you are telling me I can get a better display on MBA?!?!?!?!

In RED - how do they justify charging 1799 for such an inferior chip in comparison?

In YELLOW - 1499 for this chip, really apple?

I still love my unibody macbook.

EDIT: just realized it was quad core... makes much more sense now

For me, Apple never ceases to disappoint. They'll improve one thing, and downgrade another.

Hi all,

I am a bit confused about the new GPU, it doesn't seem like much of an update. For graphic design and a bit of 3D modeling, is the 15" with 6490M 256 MB adequate? Or sould i go for the high-end option? Probably going for the high resolution screen as well btw.

I see that macbook pro got major hardware update, but is it still considered full update? I don't see any cosmetic update on this MBP version.

Is there a trick to force the new MBP to only use the integrated graphics in order to get back to the battery times of the models which only had integrated graphics (ie, the 2009/2010 13" and low-end 15")?

Yea use gfxCardStatus

Enjoy your Dell then - I'll continue to enjoy my Macs

Did you notice how people in the UK always complain how expensive Macs are, because of 20% VAT, but when he tries to show how good a value this Dell is, he quotes the price without VAT?

£1,240 for 1.6 GHz. I think the £999 MBP 13" eats his Dell for breakfast :D

You'll need to spend $2199 to play anything decent, even World of Warcraft (which they show on the site) at medium settings at the native resolution.

Battery Life has possibly gone down.

LightPeak, cool but it's not going to be used for a while.

No SSD boot drive.

No screen resolution increase.

No physical changes.

You really have to hate Windows something fierce to be ok with this...I honestly thought the $500 computer specs in a $1200 computer would end when the Core2Duo was replaced, but looks like it isn't. I really thought this was going to be my first Mac, looks like it won't be.

Are they putting this crap out as a place holder for a bigger refresh or is Apple just an iOS device maker now?

So all the processors in all the models have the sandy bridge chips correct? Just want to make sure if I get a 13in model im not getting last years processor.

is it me, or has the quoted battery life gone down from ten hours to seven?

http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/features.html#battery

It says "up to 7 hours wireless web" whereas before it said "up to 10 hours battery life." I think this is likely an improvement, note that most "battery life estimates" are with most features turned off such as wireless. And Apple was guilty of this before. The wireless card can zap battery life, I suppose since more and more people are constantly "online" wirelessly that Apple chose to point out its 7 hours of battery with the WiFi connection on...impressive.

Overall a very nice spec increase, I'm wondering why they went from NVidia to AMD graphics (although they do use AMD in iMacs) on the laptops. Quad core is good to see and Thunderbolt is funny considering Apple continues to buck the USB 3.0 trend.

Would have been nice to get bigger hard drives and more RAM but I see they are trying to keep the price point around the same as before. Makes my mid-2009 Macbook Pro seem ancient but I suppose I'll wait another year or so to get a new one, maybe by then we'll also see a physical redesign of the laptop.

Nice... but my previous generation 2.66GHz MacBook Pro will last me a few years still I think. :)

Still curious as to why lightpeak is integrated into the display port rather than the USB ports.
I have the 2.53GHz Macbook Pro and this one will definitely last me for years to come.

the real question now is, whether to get this minor update, or wait 6 months and get a complete update/redesign. this is my first mb and im the type of person who needs to have the latest and greatest. so, should i wait it out till the next complete update (which will probably be in 6 or so months) or jump on it now and probably kick myself 6 months from now when theres a huge update and im stuck with last generation?

Welcome to the tech world. NO matter what you buy there will be a nicer newer model out with 1 year.
