13'' incher was a major bummer.. i'm getting the 15'' with hi res display and better gpu, i wonder if its going to run hot

So it looks so far like there is basically NOTHING for BTO options?

An extra processor on the 17", screen res bumps on the 15s, and that's it?

oh no...

no the expected instant-on feature??
battery down 3 hrs?
still 2.04 kg??
still optical drive??

what the *, apple?!!!

Looks like there is a still a high resolution upgrade for the 15"; looks like I'm still picking one of these puppies up.

13-inch. Starts at $1199. 15-inch. Starts at $1799. 17-inch. Starts at $2499.

13-inch. Starts from € 1.149. 15-inch. Starts from € 1.749. 17-inch. Starts from € 2.499.

Who else thinks this is just wrong? 1 U.S. dollar = 0.72 Euros

What absolute *******s.

They really screwed the UK over with this.

USD Price for the LOWEST spec one: $1199

This converts to GBP at £740 (todays rate)

Apple are selling it for £999!

You'd have to be a complete moron to be willing to pay that for such a poor spec 13" model!

They really are taking the piss big time with those prices. For another £300 you can buy a Mac Pro for goodness sake!

This gets brought up every time.

IIRC US prices don't include taxes, EU prices do. And Apple has to build in a margin for currency fluctuations or it'd be changing its prices every few days.

New 13" models

If I read correctly, the reason that the battery life is lower is because they test them differently and more rigorously now.

The battery capacity on the 13" model is unchanged at 63.5 watt-hours.
Both the 2.3 GHz i5 version and the 2.7 GHz i7 version are listed as
offering 7 hours.

I hope this is no more than a change in the test/measurement process.
I'll be eagerly awaiting 3rd party analyses of this issue.

Too bad there is no matte display option on the 13". :(

I'll probably still buy the low-end 13" model.

...and the weight is unchanged at 4.5 pounds. :(

Weight and battery life are two of my primary criteria. I'm currently using
a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo and that's just fine; a speed bump is always welcome
but its not what I was hoping for.

At $2199 is better damn well be awesome.

Prices are actually worse than before

Agreed. Glad they gave the option, as they now finally have a decent GPU in a laptop. But wish the 6750 was in the base 15", or offered as a $100 upgrade. At $2200 + tax; I've unfortunately got to pass.

It really isn't better! You do know that just because it's i7 processor, its totally different to the new ones just announced? You have blu-ray, everything else is worse or equal.

2,3GHZ core i3 thats nothing faster than the previous C2D 2,4Ghz.
It's just a new name for almost the same processor

it's 2,3ghz core i5 which means it has turbo boost up to (i think) around 2,8ghz.
Not bad, but we still get the same laptop with a little better processor and comparable (maybe better maybe worse) gpu.
Sucky upgrade IMO, unless light peak starts getting used by the industry.

Photoshop

Do I need a better GPU for running lightroom and CS5? Or those applications need a better CPU than GPU.
In other words, if I am choosing 15" should I upgrade to AMD6750 (and not 6490) to use the above applications more effectively?
Also can some one enlighten me if resolution upgrade on 15" is better for photo editing.

Thank you.

mate i worked for apple and trust me they aint stupied. the so called 'hike' is due in shipping and storage cost LOL. believe it if you want! BUY a dell mate! XPS all day long!

I was looking at 13" inch, but no high-res screen and graphic card is dealbreaker. I still can't believe it doesn't have dedicated graphics card! And they call it 'Pro' computer lol

I'll go with the expensive 15" inch this time..

You are not comparing apples with apples. The US price does not include sales tax were as the UK one includes 20% VAT so it comes down to £832.50 still a load more but not as bad as it looks.

I'm happy with the update but the graphics card is a major let down. Still 256?! I agree, the base 15 should at least have 512 by now. I'm planning on switching back to Mac from my Asus G53jw (only had for 4 months) for other reasons besides gaming, but I'm sure going to miss the 1.5gb Nvidia card in this bad boy. Will 256 even be able to play Battlefield 3 when it comes out? Well, let me rephrase that, can it play it and not look like absolute crap?!

I'm still an Apple fan and respect them, but their website with all the descriptions of the new stuff makes me nauseous. It's so pretentious. They're good updates, but they're nothing new in the general laptop market. I'm sick of them milking every single thing as long as they can.

You forgot to add VAT @20%, which takes it up to £886. We're still getting ripped to the tune of £113, but not as bad as the £260 you thought...

The prices are horrible for the spec of these machines. Don't think I could even justify them with an employee discount.

It really isn't better! You do know that just because it's i7 processor, its totally different to the new ones just announced? You have blu-ray, everything else is worse or equal. As the stores not up yet we don't know what the bto for graphics cards will be.

agreed on the difference on 'specs' of the processor, but for the cost between the two mechines and still no blue-ray in sight nor 1080p, its a massive SAVE! no?

If I read correctly, the reason that the battery life is lower is because they test them differently and more rigorously now.

You're perfectly right, Apple just chose to re-list / re-test the batteries for the MBPs at an update rather than change the stated results for the old models. Would have stopped a load of moaning from people at the update, but in any case, 7 hours is a pretty respectable battery life, in my opinion.

I guess the polycarb macbook still is using the old testing method, so if it doesn’t vanish into the night, you can expect that to 'drop' at its next update too.

your also forgetting the TAX's (11%) that get added in the states so the £260 is about right if not just abit less!
