I'm confused by the people saying this is too expensive.

It comes with a lightning cable ($19) and you don't need a Watch cable ($29) so that makes this comparable to $31 docks.

I paid $29 for the elevation labs dock and bought a watch cable to use with it (the cable that came with the watch is my travel cable) so I'm $58 in the hole on it. That dock certainly didn't come with a charger either.

The official Apple Dock is very competitive on pricing. I just wish they had it in black.

Greed has nothing to do with it. Apple is a business and their goal is to maximize their profit. That is the goal of all for-profit businesses. If you don't like their product pricing, then you are welcome to not buy from them. If a lot of people feel the same way, their sales will drop and the lowered demand will cause the prices to drop. That is the way the world works. It would be dumb for them to sell it for less than the market will bear.

This device is priced right in line with all the other accessories Apple has made and sold for as long as I can remember. I wouldn't expect them to suddenly go cheap. Would I prefer it was cheaper... heck yes I would! But this is actually priced lower than I would have expected given how high the similar 3rd party devices are priced. Some of them are more, and don't even include the charger.

For me, I don't see much value in this until they change the watch so that you can keep the display lit while its on the charger. Who wants an alarm clock next to their bed that you have to find in the dark and touch to tell what time it is. There is no logical reason why they wouldn't allow you to keep it lit on a charger.

If you bump the nightstand the Apple Watch is sitting on, the screen will light on. I guess they figured that it's the best way while not running the display for 8 hours straight.

Going to have to stop you right there...

Because that is exactly what greed is.
excessive or rapacious desire , especially for wealth or possessions.

Now I'm not judging. Yes, a Corporations main goal is basically "Greed". this is not, nor should be in any way new to anyone.

I'm really glad I'm not the least bit tempted to venture into Apple Watch Land and these related expensive gadgets. Love my mac and iphone … I'm set! (My buddy's got an Apple watch and it just looks so huge and cumbersome. Not my cup-o-tea.) :)

Nope. No way. Too close...

With every day I'm more disgusted by the obvious greed of Apple. When I jumped into Apple ecosystem in 2007, I understood the products are a bit more expensive [than competition], but most likely worth it. But today everything they sell is so obviously and shamelessly overpriced, that it seems the millionaires/billionaires at Apple have lost any connection with reality and turned the brand in some sort of Vertu equivalent.

YES!!!! "Tim money bags Cook"

Works well, good design, expensive. If you don't like it don't buy it.

If you think it's too expensive, design your own and sell it for less. Put your money where your mouth is and see if you can beat Apple.

I can lay the charger that came with the watch down in the case that it came in, and lay the watch down right in my case and charge it just like this charger, so this seems a bit useless unless you really need the nightstand mode. I guess it's for people who want to say they have the official Apple dock and are willing to pay for it.

You shouldn't have to pay 19 Dollars for something that probably costs a dollar or less to make!

That is the problem with proprietary charging/cable solutions. Apple and free reign with zero competition thus can charge what they like.

It's why they probably didn't go with a standard wireless solution for the Apple Watch as well.another bunch of cables and accessories they can fleece people on.

This thing is f******* 130 Australian dollars lol

These days you can get Smart phones for that price. Or apple TV competitors that can actually stream 4k.

And if people say "What about R&D".....please, they put a hinge on the magnet, run the cable through a disk of material and wham bam pure ******* profit making machine baby.

Apple have lost themselves. They were actually competitive in terms of pricing a few years ago in some areas. Completely lost their mind now.

In all fairness that is very naive .. Apple is extremely skilled at manipulating mass media and basically creating a generation (if not almost generations) of people that have bought into the Apple way of life, the minimalist elegance, the Buddhist founder that everyone loves, the history the anti establishment it's the perfect storm for one of the best companies ever created. Now however, people are locked, the walled garden is sucking it's pigs dry for every cent. This utterly childish view of just don't buy it doesn't really exist in our culture, everyone has to have everything the whole world is made to consume and Apple are making hundreds of billions off people's need or apparent need. We have people selling their kidneys for a new iPhone, going into huge dept to pay for items that don't cost ANYTHING CLOSE to what they are sold for.. Yes Apple is a corporation and a business to make money but a company this huge with this much power has to have social responsibility and see how they are damaging people's lives for a few extra billion that they don't spend anyway. Apple is getting into a dangerous game with overpricing everything it creates and the only losers are humans trying to get what they are manipulated into thinking they need... Apple is a money making machine now, NOT a company that's changing the world, it's changing the world of the millionaires it represents. Ye I said it... Come at me!!!

Pricey. Apple seems so out of touch when they release products like this. Expensive but it looks so basic and honestly not attractive. Much better looking alternatives for half this price available.

Makes me wonder why they bothered.

$$$$

I'm not, mine has stopped gripping the charging disc and the weight of the watch (42MM stainless with sport strap) pulls it out at night, based on the reviews lots of people have had the same issue and I note now that their product page explicitly excludes the stainless steel with link bracelet!

Also on the price front, if you are looking to buy a 2nd charging cable anyway, $29 + $29 ($39 for 6') is getting close to the $79 Apple is charging for this new stand.

One of the things that appeals to me with this is that it stops the cable dropping of the nightstand. My Elevation stand does the same thing now, and I just attached the charging disc to the back of the watch and lay it on my night stand!

I wonder if the magnet in the sport charger is not as strong as the SS one? I have had mine for a few months now.

You make a very good point. For me it was the iPhone with 16GB and the iMacs with 5400 rpm HD. Seriously that's is insane in 2015. If Apple wants to give the best experience they should have better specs at entry line products. The greedy in trying to squeeze more $ is getting old and it is pretty pathetic.

I work in an industry where a consumer will not spend the higher price for the larger product , unless they can test it or unless there is an entry price point.

So, all the people complaining here about 16 GB phones, 5,400 rpm hard drives (Why hard drives at all these days?) etc. most likely will not buy the entry price products .

They know they won't suffice for long. Add the PC world switchers and first time buyers and offering the entry price version makes sense for a business.

Just because Apple has $$$ and is big, doesn't mean that they shouldn't be allowed to have "weak" entry price products.

Of course there are also a few consumers which will do just fine with "basic".

Experienced computer users will always buy the largest drives they can get , the most memory, fastest chips, etc. if they can afford it.

I could see a problem for Apple if the higher options were not available.

So, while I shake my head at 16GB iPhones, 5,400 rpm 256 drives etc. it doesn't bother me, as I am not that user/consumer.

The only way this entry price game will stop from any company is if consumers no longer buy that "basic" model/products.

Until then............................
