I wonder if Apple is using Microsoft Exchange on the backend, with a custom web interface?

If so, they could totally turn this situation around, PR-wise.

Same here - I work in DC for a Federal department and we are locked-in to IE 6 with no hope for an upgrade to Firefox or Safari. I recently asked IT for an upgrade to IE 7 in the hopes that I could get to MobileMe but was denied. Now the only way I can check e-mail from work will be if I get an iPhone...

http://portableapps.com/

That's what I use at work since my machine is locked as well. Portable Firefox is my best friend at work :)

Depending on how locked down your environments are - you might get away with using Firefox Portable from http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable , which runs off your flash drive. I think there are other implementations of this, but this is the one I use :)

It's a little slower than a HDD install, but it might be ok for MobileMe stuff...

I've been trying just like everyone else and yet I haven't gotten anywhere except the redirect back to the advertising page on apple.com. :(

But that's obscene - what's the argument for making a federal department use software which is nearly six years old and doesn't respect accessibility or standards laws? It's not like it would cost anything, and would be a hell of a lot more secure.... Go shout at your bosses.

Also, anybody notice Apple hasn't registered me.de or me.co.uk yet? Somebody want to make a quick buck (or million), jut go register one of those.

That's because me.de cannot be registered since the DENIC, which handles German domains, does not allow for domains with only two characters. There are just three exceptions to this and Volkswagen has just successfully sued for vw.de, but for just about everyone else the restriction still holds true.

I don't see me yet. Is this being rolled out gradually?

No. It's been going up and down for the past few hours. I like the idea of a 5 minute rule. If it isn't up for 5 minutes, no need posting because by the time you hit the submit button, it's already back down.

There also dealing with activations of 3g iPhones, the US isn't the only place that was getting them. :)

We're not overly locked-down in my building in terms of being a secure environment - just have a very tightly wound IT department that want justifications for ANYTHING that you want to change on your machine.

I'll give this a shot next week and see how it goes. Thanks!

This launch is a disaster. There are people with brand new 3G iphones who can't use mobileme because of a day one crash. Even the apple kool-aid drinkers have to admit that this is a monumental punt. If MS ever did this we'd never hear the end of it.

Up and Down

I've seen the sign in screen twice, but it's never gotten past that for me. At least the App Store is working, if you know where the back door is!

i cant download mobile me from software update. it says there is no new software and i did the other work around to go to system preferences and stuff but that doesnt work.

if anyone can help me id appreciate it. thanks

Yeah, there was already a liam@mac.com, I originally tried to get it but ended up having to add my surname. I was gonna try & get liam@me.com this time around but I missed it. Well done Liam,

Liam!

Ahh in that case the person who said they registered 'liam@' probably hasn't, just some kind of glitch. The @me.com addresses are allocated to the @mac.com accounts, if you own one you own the other, you don't have to use them both but you can use either at anytime and you don't have to worry that someone else will get the other. So Liam who thought he got lucky, looks like you didn't!

That's what she said! ;)

An yeah I have gotten all the free apps that I will use, so excited for tomorrow morning! I just wanted to play around with mobile me for now, seeing as I can only sync with two computers because 2.0 isn't out yet.

Portable Firefox is great

http://www.portableapps.com Portable Firefox is great!

There are also some other cool apps there as well that do not require install.

Subvert your tightly wound IT Department today!

Still waiting to get in and check my email this morning.

Apple Discussions down as well...
