ps...

i mean, at some point, the software is going to need upgrading, or will federal depts. still be using ie6 in 2012? I wouldn't think a 6 year upgrade cycle too demanding - it's about time tech' support departments started doing some work!

I just got in also but after i signed up and entered my credit card info it redirected me back to the advertisement page AGAIN! I hope I'm not charged twice.

You won't. The next page after you hit continue is an AJAXey 'Please wait while we validate your card'.

The suggestion that the me.com servers can't handle the traffic at the moment doesn't make sense, even if it did it wouldn't be an excuse. We're talking about an online service which is likely to have a lot of users online and active at the same time, not sure how many existing subscribers there are but I'd imagine we're talking about millions.

Add on all the new users they'll be expecting as a result of the new push service and the new iPhone 3G users and they would of had to add a lot of new capacity anyway for the coming months - which should be more than capable of handling the extra surge when me.com went online.

Still, you can't get away from the fact that me.com is totally shafted at present. Pretty bad news for Apple, looks like their iPhone 3G and new services launch hasn't been planned for very well and is going to leave them looking pretty stupid.

It doesn't bode well for the future either. What will happen when they launch the next generation iPhone - they could easily be looking at demand of 5 million plus on launch and at the moment I don't have much confidence in them getting things right. Maybe things are getting too big for them to handle?

This is a crock

I have gotten to the final page of sign up for a MobileMe account and each time I submit I get thrown back to $%^&*() apple.com/mobileme. Jesus H Christ!

"Poorly planned?"

Any go-live situation has it's quirks. You can plan to the Nth degree and still have a fatal situation that was overlooked that jeopardizes a go-live. Is it bad? Well... yes it's bad. I can't really dispute that. It does not mean that the go-live was poorly planned, rushed, etc.

Just my two cents.

A big reason for sticking with IE6 is compatibility - alot of places (mine included) has web based applications which have been running on IE6 for years and they don't want to risk having issues upgrading to 7 (or switching to Firefox).
So it's no Vista for you guys I guess?

Let me get this right. MS created a browser that barely conforms to web standards, IE6. Some would even say that they deliberately subverted the standards in order to make enough of the web IE only and thus a Windows only experience. Evidently, certain organisations cannot afford to upgrade to Vista because doing so would break their apps/intranets. Their dumbass plan has meant they lost Vista sales. You reap what you sow.

Ok, I must be blind. Where do I sign up for a free trial of Mobile Me? I can't see anything on the site about it??

I was taking a look at the source code of the Me.com login page and from the looks of the current JavaScript code, when you visit me.com with IE7 it sends you to a "browser coming soon" page (which must give that error mentioned earlier about IE7 not being fully supported). That hopefully means that IE7 is going to be fully supported in the near future but wasn't ready in time for the prime time release.

or, it could just be a weird naming scheme Apple set up :p

You contradict yourself in your post. In the first part you say that it's not a load issue, then in the second half you claim that with a new iPhone launch we might see a surge of demand that they cannot handle.

I think this is less of a load issue and more that something has gone wrong and the intended result was the apple.com/mobileme page to be where you were pointed until things were sorted out. But for some, they can still get thru while the changes are filtering down to all of the servers.

If we're still where we are right now at the end of the day, let's call it a disaster or say that they might not be able to handle themselves. Right now it's just a large transition that's taking a lot longer than expected. At least they're fixing their issues today instead of on 3g launch day.

I'll remind everyone that when the iTunes Music Store first launched, the servers were so slammed that many people couldn't buy any music the first day. It happens, but it hardly turned out to be a "disaster."

Nit, it is 3G launch day for some, and even worse, for some of those folks it's likely their first interaction with the iPhone and/or Apple. However, I do agree with the sentiment of your post.

The iPhone 3G still hasn't gone on sale yet in 90% of the world, so it's hardly what you would call a disastrous launch yet at this point. Try having a little patience and hopefully the kinks will get ironed out here in the next couple of hours.

Me.com should have been up already for all the existing .Mac users. I've had .Mac since iTools in 2000/2001 and I use it as my primary email. To take this down yesterday and still not have it up and running is fairly lame. Forget about 3G for a moment and make sure when it is time to transition, that you do it efficiently.

I at least hope that MobileMe.com is not as slow and retarded as .Mac mail via the web has been otherwise what's the point of the revamp if it is still a turtle. C'mon Apple get you head out of the cloud so the rest of us can use it.
