But that's obscene - what's the argument for making a federal department use software which is nearly six years old and doesn't respect accessibility or standards laws? It's not like it would cost anything, and would be a hell of a lot more secure.... Go shout at your bosses.

I agree with you and had this discussion with IT last week but response was a negative, Ghostrider. They claimed that IE 7 wasn't secure and that Firefox and Safari installation were not essential applications. Fun group of people down in IT...

because the Canada dollar is not the same as the US dollar

Thanks for coming out! If that were the cause, then MobileMe would cost $99 US, $100 in Canada at today's exchange rate.

Fact is, most consumer and some pro Apple software does carry the same price tag for US and Canada.

MobileMe has a slight premium. Why? I don't know. Maybe the Oompa Loompas who run the servers hate Canada. Maybe Apple has to pay Rogers a bandwidth fee (wouldn't surprise me).

For one thing, it's not software, it's a service. Plus the servers are hosted in the US, are there some issues with transmitting data over the border? I don't know, maybe someone does.

Really, we should get it at a discount. Having our data hosted on US servers means that it is under the jurisdiction of the ridiculous Patriot act. If Dick Cheney can read my email without me ever knowing, then I think I should get a rebate.

i cant download mobile me from software update. it says there is no new software and i did the other work around to go to system preferences and stuff but that doesnt work.

if anyone can help me id appreciate it. thanks

Are you running Leopard or 10.4.11, because I'm having the same issue on my home machine.

The software itself might be free but it would cost the companies to upgrade: someone would have to do the installs, its not like they could just tell everyone in the company to go to the site and install it - even if they did the tech support calls would be crazy.. IE 7 is differnet enough from IE 6 that its not a transparent upgrade and it would confuse plenty of people.

A big reason for sticking with IE6 is compatibility - alot of places (mine included) has web based applications which have been running on IE6 for years and they don't want to risk having issues upgrading to 7 (or switching to Firefox).

Interesting that Apple's support discussion page is temporarily down - I imaging it has nothing to do with the possibility of people complaining?! :)

We're not overly locked-down in my building in terms of being a secure environment - just have a very tightly wound IT department that want justifications for ANYTHING that you want to change on your machine.

I'll give this a shot next week and see how it goes. Thanks!

One quick point re Firefox Portable - be sure to use File -> Import to get your IE settings into FF. This is essential if you're sat behind a corporate proxy - apart from that you should be fine.

So we know the iphone will be able to handle push e-mail with the new 2.0 update, but what about the standard mail app for desktops? I guess having it check every "1 minute" is pretty close, but I'm just curious.

Me Login screen!!

I found out something interesting.. I browsed the history in safari and selected the link which, earlier this morning, was working(Account details link). I get the login screen but when I login, I go to the mobileme ad page... This means that MobileMe is online but on some hidden link.. I am trying to find that link right now...;)

And down again.

I managed to access iDisk, Calendar, and Contacts before it died. No luck with e-mail. It was running like complete garbage from my work PC (IE7). Oy.

This launch is a disaster. There are people with brand new 3G iphones who can't use mobileme because of a day one crash. Even the apple kool-aid drinkers have to admit that this is a monumental punt. If MS ever did this we'd never hear the end of it.

Umm, the 3G's don't go on sale till tomorrow? Take a deep breath and try again later.:)

Ahh in that case the person who said they registered 'liam@' probably hasn't, just some kind of glitch. The @me.com addresses are allocated to the @mac.com accounts, if you own one you own the other, you don't have to use them both but you can use either at anytime and you don't have to worry that someone else will get the other. So Liam who thought he got lucky, looks like you didn't!

I'm sure i did.. I can login to mail and send/recieve from liam@ - and login to iChat with it (Well, occasionally! only when the me.com site is up for the 2 minutes it is every so often!)

Here's mail:

Some people live in this (the only thing that happens in my country is the only thing that matters, and is the end of the universe) apparently you are one of them.

In case you haven't heard, New Zealand is on a different time zone. :)

I just got in also but after i signed up and entered my credit card info it redirected me back to the advertisement page AGAIN! I hope I'm not charged twice.

I hope some of you folks don't work for DOT vehicle inspections. I could just imagine the conversations:

"Hey Bob, is the left turn signal working?"
"Yes. No. Yes. No. Yes. No..."

Give it a REST people. Again, TEST the stuff out before declaring it's up. Because so far, your track record for accuracy is ZERO.

I think you're misunderstanding me, I'm not advocating a shift to ie7, I'm advocating a shift away from internet explorer all together in favor of something along the lines of firefox.
