I don't know if this has been linked to already or not, but MacWorld has a direct link to the MobileMe.pkg on Apples servers. I saw the update via the updater tool at home, but not at work on my laptop. One of the comments to the story state that this is for Leopard only. Anyway, just relaying the info.

I don't know much about such things, but I wonder if the reason that it's been removed from Software Update is because there's a problem. In which case, it would be sensible not to use this pkg but rather wait for an official version via Software Update.

Maybe...

The iPhone 3G still hasn't gone on sale yet in 90% of the world, so it's hardly what you would call a disastrous launch yet at this point. Try having a little patience and hopefully the kinks will get ironed out here in the next couple of hours.

Thats what people were saying at 12am PST (almost 12 hours ago!) In the meantime, I'm downloading apps. hoping that by this time tomorrow, when I have MY iPhone, I'll be able to sync everything with MobileMe

You contradict yourself in your post. In the first part you say that it's not a load issue, then in the second half you claim that with a new iPhone launch we might see a surge of demand that they cannot handle.

I don't think I did. A load issue doesn't make sense as they should have more than enough capacity in place and even if that is the cause its no excuse.

With regard to the next iPhone launch, I was talking about stock levels as much as the load issues. It appears that they are nowhere near meeting demand for the iPhone 3G and it could take a month or more for them to catch up - I'm guessing longer. The demand will be a lot higher for the next major upgrade of the iPhone (maybe when Wi-Max or similar is added).

We're talking about demand higher than there has ever been for consumer products - far worse than the situation with the Nintendo Wii for example. It makes me wonder how Apple will cope with it, or if they can.

I think they were just providing more evidence against it being a load issue.

If it was a load issue, then imagine how bad the next iPhone launch would be for the service!

They delayed the start of the launch by 2 hours - that to me suggests that they found a problem with MobileMe and had to fix it. .mac was still working great until it was taken down (i.e. no server overload).

application woes

How do I get the apps I downloaded onto my ipod touch? It doesn't seem to want to let me do that.

Yeah, I saw that in one of Neowin's threads.

Just to add some shiny pictures to an otherwise dull text page. So far it doesn't allow you to login, just takes you to the marketing pages.

Apple's Sense of Humor

The date that MobileMe was going to go LIVE, was on Apples website all this time. From the first time they posted the page about Mobile Me. It was in their Logo for MobileMe all along. Look at the icon for the Calendar, it says "Tuesday 9".
I didn't catch it. Honestly, did anyone else?

Because it is wholly unnecessary and redundant. Why would you need to access the webapps if all of the info is on your iPhone already and is synced up.

I'll remind everyone that when the iTunes Music Store first launched, the servers were so slammed that many people couldn't buy any music the first day. It happens, but it hardly turned out to be a "disaster."

The difference is that .mac is a CURRENT SERVICE that until yesterday was up and running, and many people rely on it for files/data etc. I am currently PAYING FOR IT TO NOT WORK, whereas you don't pay for iTunes until you dl the song.

I am also on a business trip in INDIA right now, and have been using Back To My Mac to retrieve data from my home computer(I have an Air, so the HD is small - a problem which BTMM was designed for). For me none of my critical files isn't here so it is annoying but not a problem. Other people are probably actually COUNTING on iDisk, BTTM, etc for their data. For them it could be a disaster. And for a company like Apple that sells itself on "just working", I'd say it is a pretty big F-up.

Why not just work out MobileMe AND leave .mac up at the same time? Why take current services offline that people are paying for and relying on when you KNOW there are always bugs on a startup?

So far the apps seem pretty BLAH. Hoping to see a good fitness tracker and something from the NFL and NHL soon.

Not sure the rest of the URL is all that important, apart from the destination piece.

&returnURL={bunch of chars}&destinationUrl=/idisk

Yeah as long as you have the destination URL other part is just a session that isn't important until you actually log in and set up a user session.

You need the new firmware, which doesn't yet work for the Touch because you need to buy it ($9.95).

where can i buy this update for my ipod touch?

...WOAH!!

Apple have charged my bank, or at least put a hold on £121 on my account. I'm guessing because i entered my bank details twice because the site crashed the first time :(

Surely they won't actually take the money, as its a free trial?!

Still, thats £121 i don't have access to until the release it :(

I saw that, but it doesn't mean anything. The 9th was a Wednesday this month.

Someone pointed out that all of the iPhone demo pictures and whatnot say Tuesday 9 because that's the day that the iPhone was first introduced at MWSF. Haven't verified that though.

Too bad the 9th was not Tuesday.
