Yes, but last time I checked, +70% of people don't use Safari or Firefox...

Not doing something and not being able to do something are two completely different things.

Those users can download Safari/Firefox. They're both free. Wether they do that or not is a choice the user makes. Apple designed a product to standards. IE does not comply with said standards. If you're going to blame anyone, blame MS, not Apple.

MobileMeltdown

from stuff.tv:

MobileMe in meltdown?

Been trying to access MobileMe today? Hope you had more success than us...

The iPhone fanfare is almost reaching a deafening crescendo, but over on the MobileMe front it's the silence that's deafening. After initially launching at me.com today, the service has now returned to a "coming soon" message, after users reporting excruciatingly slow load times.

What's more, existing .Mac customers have reported that the existing service have been down for most of the day "for scheduled maintenance". Hmmm – trouble over at Apple?

This is more than a little annoying for anyone who runs their businesses and emails on a .Mac account.

It may be pulled but if you try going in to your .Mac prefs then running the software update it may pop up. That is what I had to do.

It doesn't matter anyway. Until MobileMe is back up, everything in Leopard still shows as .Mac. If you read the MobileMe set up instructions for MM, this is expected behavior. Apparently the icon and branding will only change when you login/config MobileMe for the first time, even from existing .mac accounts.

Regular .mac mail and push .mac mail to iPhones works, as I mentioned above; that's all for now. Galleries, iDisk, etc., all down.

For all who couldn't access Apple Discussions, this is why:

http://discussions.apple.com/ann.jspa?annID=638

I already saw that, but this was well after 6:30-7:30 PDT that I was having problems with Discussions. I got onto Discussions just fine at first, but then minutes later it started not loading, then after a few minutes it started working again. I think the servers are just getting hit like crazy today and it's making it sluggish.

EDIT: Just was able to log into MobileMe on the web again. Let's see how long it lasts this time...

Except that the replacement for Vista is . . . Vista. Do you think MS will just throw away all of the development for Vista? No, Windows 7 will be Vista underneath.

You don't have to tell me that, I don't make the decisions around here! :)

MoileMe seems to be back online.

Kinda! I've got the spinning wheel of goodness, and when i tried to set up mobileme preferences, it says NO DICE! :) Now its official back to the marketing page. Enough with the teasing Steve. Let's get this sucker done!

not logged in

i tried to login to .Mac through system preferences on my computer to see if there was a way to update but this happened...is this a problem?

I'm irritated that my .Mac functionality is down and not replaced as they promised. What's not to understand about that? .Mac is a means for me to communicate with my family.

Has Apple officially stated this thing is up and running?

They haven't?

And we are mad about it not working because of what?

Until it's "launched" you can't rationally complain about its lack of functionality. Or even its lack of existence.

Yes we can - my .Mac services went off line yesterday and are still NOT functional.

Man, some people really aren't learning their lesson on posting "it's up" so soon. Do you want to be the first to report it that badly that you will settle for first to be terribly wrong? :)

Same here, .mac is down and nothing is ready to replace it.

Again, .mac IMAP and POP email is working fine. Even push .mac email to EDGE firmware 2.0 iPhones is working fine. Web .mac mail interface is down, and it's just everything else is down. They should, ah, try testing it before they freak out.

Exactly.

No matter what you use the service for, .mac was working fine yesterday.

MobileMe should be an improvement, but this transition has been poorly handled and as others have said a $100 service should warrant a small note on the MobileMe support page stating what they are doing.

Maybe we should've seen some staggering in the software updates, trying to do all of this in the span of like two or three days, concurrently with a new product launch, is putting some serious stress on Apple's network and employee infrastructure.
