I guess I shouldn't be shocked at the apologists but I still am. I'm not crying over the launch screw-up up but you still have to admit it's been a total disaster thus far.

Yahoo! introduced an entirely new email system for tens of millions of users without any noticeable downtime at all. They overlapped the old and new systems so there were no launch problems. Ahem Apple. And the price for their service is $0.00.

You can let go of the name calling. Just as many as you call them "apologists" are on this forum there are equally, if not more, complaining people or as others would call them, "Whiners".

You call the launch a disaster? How so? Yes, it's delayed but what disaster? Your post is just one the things that put "apologists" on the defense because you're not stating your concerns your lashing out with crazy adjectives.

I certainly would like to know what line of work you do that people depend on you for and you haven't lost track of time and delayed others?

You are certainly in your rights to post your concerns but if everything is working great and operational upon the launch you will be thanking Apple for taking time to get it right.

People complained that Leopard was rushed out and now Apple is taking their time, don't you think they've learned from releasing stuff too early? What good would it be if they released MobileMe several hours ago and there were massive problems? You would be upset and we all would know it on this forum.

I'm updating as I type :p

Just got home from work, but I have been reading MacRumors off and on all day.

Maybe tomorrow morning all things will up and running? Let's hope so!

C'mon :apple:, you got people countin' on ya!

Congrats, you are the first poster in this "and Apple TV 2.1" thread who has spoke on it! :)

Lacasse - I use iWeb to develop and maintain my business site. One button publishing, no software optimization required for the high resolution photographs, no FTP effort, no parsing errors to track down, etc.

iWeb and Apple have worked very well for me. I really don't understand how Apple could allow something this important get so far out of hand on the day of the iPhone launch. It will get fixed - just shocked at this one.

But isn't the site still up and available for web traffic to hit it?

You are kidding aren't you?

MobileMe was "released" HOURS ago, but there HAVE been massive problems.

It's quite clear that they haven't learnt a thing from past mistakes (and not just Apple's mistakes, but the mistakes of similar companies).

The MobileMe support pages have been rolled back to .Mac. They were related to the MobileMe service earlier on.

You can "trick" it by going to the UK site, at least for now.

http://www.apple.com/uk/support/mobileme/

EDIT: Apparently, according to that site, you can get an email response from Apple within 24 hours now if you have MobileMe. Was this already publicized? I remember they used to have something similar for a while with .Mac...

You are being a tad naive. Apple announced the downtime for the service (total 6 hours) and therefore the time when mobileme would be live. Some, I don't know, 12 hours later? the service is still not functioning properly and Apple haven't said anything publicly about when it will. Even if you don't think it's a disaster, Apple have allowed this to become a huge publicity disaster - and it is being described as such by a lot of worldwide news media, internet or otherwise. Yes, people are getting too worked up about it on both sides - but there are some facts in amongst it all: Apple have clearly failed to meet the timetable they themselves set and the fact that mobileme has been constantly going live and then crashing shows things are not going as planned.

If not a disaster, then certainly a major screw-up. In IT, when I tell my users that I need to take services down for a maintenance window, exceeding that timeframe by close to 24 hours (that's about how long it's been down so far) would CERTAINLY be considered a screw up...

I certainly would like to know what line of work you do that people depend on you for and you haven't lost track of time and delayed others?

Wow.

I had not seen a thread like this for a while. I'm a long time member but don't post as much anymore. I also signed up for an iDisk account when it came out, then I was transitioned to .Mac. If I remember correctly, that also was not a smooth transition, but it was not terrible.

I think people should be patient: what I serve from .mac is personal/artistic projects and they are working fine. My .mac email (primary) is also working fine, even with the new 2.0 firmware on my iphone today.

I also understand people who depend on webmail to check their .mac email. I know not all of us have the luxury to never sit in front of a PC at work; also, that some users may serve more important content than just family photos. I personally love .mac for many reasons but don't trust it-let's be honest. For my company's website I use a business-grade web hosting service that has never been down.

But that's just me.

I hope we can respect each other's opinions while we create this behemoth thread. I am sure the service will come back in few more hours, maybe even overnight for those of us in the US.

Here's another thought. Do you guys remember a few years ago when the apple home page (I think it was home page) displayed photos of the new G5 the day before it was introduced and it blew up all over the web? It was quickly taken down and all of us here we're saying "Oh man, How can this be? How can someone mess up so bad? someone's getting fired! Steve's whipping somebody!"

What if someone made a colossal mistake and flipped the switch early? Seriously? We've all done boneheaded things like that. Just picture it: Some engineer is at his desk going, "Okay, it's time. Here we go." And hits a slick graphite PUBLISH button on his screen. Then he goes and gets a coffee. Then all we dorks see it's live and start hitting it like a rented circus monkey when the site is not ready. The dude gets back from his office, donut in mouth looking at his ashen-faced colleagues. "What?" .."Mike, what have you done?!" Mike then gets in his car, gets on the 5 and heads to the border as fast as he can.

Okay. Apple messed up. Just trying to lighten the mood.

My site is up but editing and publishing through .Mac is an unknown risk that I won't take until the system is stable. I still can not get into my .Mac account for the personal domain setting.

You change content on a static site daily?

Obviously, things are not going according to plan....

So, we can all simmer down a bit. Who knows what happened? It would be good if Apple would say, "Houston, we have a problem."

bmk - good points all. It is now 16 hours past the maintenance schedule. The fact that it keeps going up - then down - then up - then down suggests that they still do not understand what is wrong or how to fix it. All of this should have been sorted in the test environment.

iPhone 3G is selling now - talk about pressure building.........

A work around for publishing your iWeb site is pretty simple if you can access your iDisk. Just open iWeb and make your changes. Publish to a folder instead of .mac. The select iDisk>Web>Sites. This is the default location for publishing your website. This should help you make updates before tomorrow.

This is almost as bad as Vista! Am I right!?! MUAHAHAHA.

Just kidding. Apple will get it all together. Microsoft on the other hand, couldn't organize a s**t fight in a monkey cage. Okay, enough with the rudeness now. Back to waiting. I am downloading some great new music in the mean time; oh how nice it is to have a summer day off and sit outside with wi-fi.

It's up, but Mail and Calendars still being finicky, so I'm guessing it's not stable yet, and therefore will crash again. Yeah, that's right, I jinxed it, so what, you wanna fight about it?
