Should have been $199. I'm a little stumped why they didn't just lower the 32 GB's price to $240 and call it a day. Maybe add a 16 GB version for $199 or $229. Developers must love it when major hardware features are constantly being added and deleted from devices. Flip-flopping between having a back camera and not having one seems like a real misstep; Even if the 4G's camera was undeniably terrible.

Bring this non-feature to ipad!

How about bringing this non-feature to iPad and iPad mini? I can't think of a single time I used my iPads rear camera, and I have the fourth gen with the good camera; it's a waste! I certainly wouldn't be cought using it in public.

If the iPad mini was $299.99 retail without the rear-facing camera, I would be more likely to buy it.

I use the front-facing camera often, but the rear-facing camera is only useful on a point-and-click type of device, such as an iPhone or iPod touch, imho.

Better getting a 32G refurbished model

Not sure what all the hoopla is about, whilst I've actually been a great fan of the iTouch since launch, have purchased 4 thus far and still do not own a iPhone, having checked the refurbished costs on Apple's website, its actually better value to purchase a refurbished 32G 5th generation model with he rear camera, than to purchase the stripped down iTouch, we are talking all of US$25.00 for 16G more storage and a good rear facing camera - my daughter aged five loves it, indeed, I purchased the 64G model for Christmas, but the 32G would have been sufficient for her needs for now - just games and photo's, if a little older and with music, 64G is the way to go.

Maybe I just have a hard time imagining myself never using the camera on that device. I use the one on my iPhone all the time, despite having a Canon 30D and two film cameras at home. A lot of times I don't carry those cameras with me but the iPhone is always there.

It wouldn't be any different with the iPod Touch. We live in an interesting world, sometimes capturing that can be priceless. I just don't see Apple's angle here unless it's to appeal to weenies.

I understand your point, but I cant think of a time except at the GYM where i would have my iPod and not my iPhone. Nor can I think of a time where my iPod would be closer to me than my iPhone except at the GYM. There is a market for iPod without the camera and with the camera and I would be amongst those who would forgo the camera option because I have so much music. I just took my iPod out and looked at all the pictures on it... I have 361 pictures on my iPod, of that 361, i would image from what i can see that about 350 of them were taking using other devices and put on my iPod and I have had my iPod since the 4th gen first came out.

Finally! But I'm a but disappointed no rear camera. I still prefer using my iPod classic for music. But I like giving iPod touches as gifts. But the $300 price tag for 32 was too much.

Cheaper iPhone is coming

This to me confirms that rumors that Apple WILL release a cheaper iPhone this year. Like someone said, that's one less device using the 3.5 screen. The cheaper iPhone will take the 4s place as lowest in food chain

Don't really see the point of them anymore myself, gotta have a smartphone, don't need both.

Maybe for kids?

What they should do is make the speakers better like on my HTC One, up the storage as well, then I could see the point at that price. As it stands if I wanted something for just music an old Android phone with a 64gb microSD sounds much more attractive...and cheaper

Developers, developers, developers. These are much cheaper testing units than iPhones.

I can honestly say that I have used the camera on my 64gb 5th Gen. once in 6 months, and that was just to test it. Why bother? My Xperia Z uploads every photo instantly to Dropbox, Picassa, and it isn't a crappy 5 megapixels.

Ios 7 clearly won't be available for 4th gen. devices which is a good thing, but 16gb?

The minimum should be 32 and I want an iPod with 256gb.

I'm still baffled that people buy these things anyway. For kids? I guess, but doesn't the iPad mini seem like a better deal? Especially now that it still has a camera! I would say this finally puts the kibash on the original iPod!
Bring on the big hardware updates!!!

Are you kidding?? These things have a thousand uses. Just because *you* see now use for one...

I want one as a remote.

I even know someone who uses an iPod Touch as his sole connection to the world. No mobile phone at all. He travels all over the place and makes good money freelancing as an Animator...with no phone.

They're great for serving up porn on the run, also.

They left the camera app? must be a mistake...

I'm assuming this means the FFC can be used for still shots (and isn't implemented as some kind of "Facetime only" peripheral), using the standard camera app (and probably any app for that matter ... see below).

Developers must love it when major hardware features are constantly being added and deleted from devices.

This won't effect anything, if you invoke the camera in your app, you're probably checking for it first (you _should_ be), and since this appears to be a fully functional FFC, then I'm sure calling SourceTypeCamera will work just fine, simply default to the only camera in the hardware (i.e., the front).

No rear camera is just silly. I would think that a large target audience would be for kids too young for an iPhone. That is also the same target audience who probably use the camera the most.

Seems like a non-starter for me. When it's time up upgrade the family, I'll be off to the refurb store, instead of going this silly route.

I can see the workout angle, though I've always preferred smaller iPods (nanos, shuffles) for exercising. Right now I'm using a Shuffle after my 3rd gen Nano died.

But I think the majority of people who use the iPod Touch as a "daily driver" are teens and other people who use it in tandem with a feature phone. Most of those feature phones don't have decent cameras, so it makes sense to keep that in an iPod Touch.

Either way, it's an interesting move for what seems like a niche market. If I were a parent and wanted to save a little money, it could be an option, but I think my child would pick a used iPod Touch with a great camera over a new one without it.

This new colour combo alone will push sales of this device, nice.

It probably also makes a lot more sense that an introductory device is natural aluminium, because if you're going to give this to your kid it will get scratched to hell.

Seriously ?

Maybe peoples who simply don't care about taking picture. I have an iPhone 4 and I hardly ever use the camera.

The iPod Touch is more about a music/video player, gaming device and "wifi hotspot" internet device. There is so many usage to this thing that don't need a camera.

The current iPod Touch's rear camera isn't bad at all:p

The camera is only about £5 in a phone anyway is it not?

For me it's still to expensive. Old Ipod touch would be about £170 when it was the top end model.

8GB model with a camera would have made more sense for the casual gamer.

This product is just another example of how Apple is relapsing to its Sculley days during Jobs' ousting — a million products, a million variations on products, just to fill in price points and sell something, just to make money somehow. What happened to believing in the products Apple is making? Jobs would never have allowed this piece of junk in Apple's lineup! It's not amazing! It's not spectacular! It's not magical! It's just a regression to the original iPod touch, which didn't have a camera on the back! Nobody wants an iPod without a camera; it's absolutely useless! People use their iOS devices for the camera more than half the time!

More than just being an embarrassment to Steve Jobs' carefully nurtured product lineup, this product doesn't even make sense financially. It's missing the camera for goodness' sake!! — one of the major selling points for these iPods — it's missing the very nifty loop mechanism (which they could have at least included), and to top it all off, it only offers HALF the space of the 32GB model, but it's not even $100 cheaper!

Tim Cook has been a very sore disappointment. We are definitely in the post-Apple era now. I can't wait to see what will emerge to be the next big thing, because I admit that I'm losing my faith in the company that used to change the world.

picking up on what you said here,
'Nobody wants an iPod without a camera; it's absolutely useless!'

you mean, the iPod, a device built primarily for people to listen to music on, is useless without a rear facing camera? why? and why did hundreds of millions of people buy ipods without cameras in the past? I think it's a great move to lower the cost of the ipod and bring the touch into new markets.

Also,
'People use their iOS devices for the camera more than half the time!'

This doesn't really make sense, and even if it did, it'd be wrong

The best part about the 5th gen ipod touch is that it has the same exact LCD part as the same gen iphone, instead of a subpar non-IPS version like in previous gens.

This 16GB model will probably be used to "get rid of" A5+512MB SoCs till Fall 2014, whereas the 32GB/64GB models will be updated to A6+1GB (or 512MB) in Fall 2013.

This is the new 2-year-lasting prev-gen-CPU-recycling low end ipod touch.

It's already happened with the A4-based low end 8Gb. 4th gen ipod touches have been around for 32 months now, 20 of which as low end prev gen options. Same will happen for A5-based ipod touch. The good thing, as I said, it's that this time they ship with a real iphone-grade screen.

The new fact here is also that the camera isn't sacred or untouchable...keep that in mind for when "less pricey" (not "cheap") camera-less (edit: or better, with a downgraded camera) colored iphones will show up.
