I hate to say this but I save space, money, and weight by just using a USB CD/DVD burner. There are Blu-ray options too. It is not trapped in a single computer and if I do not want it around I just put it into storage until I need it again. This applies to my Windows desktop and Mac laptop.
Agreed, i have a BD re/write and used it maybe 1/2 a year, usually to make cds for my parents, when they go on road trips.

All my data is on external hdd, nas or the cloud, have very little on dvds, bds.

If 4k blurays come out and drastically offer better picture quality than amazon or netflix 4k, then may reconsider. TBH, times have changed, i prefer to stream media, rather than by dvds.

I'm confused. I starting reading your post and thought you disagreed with me, then halfway through I thought you were agreeing with me, then finally at the end I'm not even sure if you knew what you were talking about.

Anyways, buying a $900 used MacBook is different than buying a $3k+ brand new iMac so you can't really compare the two. Again, the buyer may not have been able to afford the $250 i7 upgrade so an i5 27" 5k iMac is still better than an i7 21" 4k iMac. Just my opinion though.
I know what I am talking about but it's obvious you do not know what you are talking about.

A person posted saying a.t those prices you don't even get an i7. You defended the prices by saying the person probably didn't need an i7. It went over your head, it was about what you are getting for the price not what the person needs. So it appears you are lost as not everyone likes overpaying for stuff.

If you are ok with overpaying then pay a bmw price for a ford fiesta. A fiesta is all you need, right?

It's worse than a fail. It's the end of the Mac if they keep this crap up. Apple can't seem to make up its mind if it wants to do USB-C or just plain Thunderbolt DESPITE the fact Thunderbolt 3 makes the move to USB-C permanently (somehow I suspect Apple will be the only manufacturer on Earth that will keep the Mini-Display Port connection just to tick off every Mac user out there (save the fanboys; nothing Apple does EVER ticks them off; they jump for joy at every misstep!)

The Lightning connection makes no sense what-so-ever unless they are planning on unleashing mice and external trackpads for the iPad (yeah that would make wacko sense). The REAL reason is that they don't want to admit that the Lightning connector was STUPID to make in the first place. It's only USB2 speeds and USB-C makes it 100% OBSOLETE in every respect. So why aren't they designign for USB-C when it's the future of both desktops and mobile platforms everywhere on the Earth??? Why did they bother to put USB-C on a Macbook only to not use it anywhere else when we KNOW that the whole world will soon be using USB-C ports for everything (including Thunderbolt 3).

Why does Apple make 4K and 5K type machines and then not give them enough GPU power to do anything but drive the GUI? (and even THAT was choppy as hell on many machines until El Capitan and Metal came out!!!)

Apple seems obsessed about getting their high-end models down in price at the cost of functionality (3rd rate GPUs; old hard drives, AMD anything....) and yet they've got a Mac Pro that once again just sits there becoming completely out of date, overpriced to hell and not upgradeable even for the video card because they insisted on using custom connectors instead of an industry standard internal slot (guaranteeing you can't make one into the ultimate gaming Mac unlike Mac Pros of years past that were at least up-to-date for the year they came out and could be made into an actual useful desktop for non-pros even if it meant over-spending). Now there is no "high-end" Mac. They're all two-bit compromises for markets that didn't ask for them or want them. It's really unreal how stupid their design decisions are. Maybe number Johnny Five should have spent more time in engineering and less time making flat ugly graphical changes to OS X!

How HARD is it to simply make a machine that has an up-to-date i7, 16GB of ram standard, a REAL GPU (like a NVidia Maxwell capable of actually driving a 4k/5k display at usable frame rates) and standard SSD drives of 512GB or greater internal? Is that really such a hard thing to make? Or would their massive profit margin simply price the machine out of the stratosphere? Given we KNOW Thunderbolt III is just around the corner with all kinds of new goodies, I can't see why anyone would want to buy a new Mac right now that didn't have to, let alone one with a Broadwell chipset in it when it's already obsolete.

What I really want to see is a Macbook Pro 15" model with Thunderbolt III using USB-C ports (plus a couple of USB3 ports included on-board for usability without a hub) and the capability of using an external high-end graphics card for gaming and the like (whether or not it's running OS X or Windows through Boot Camp). In that case, the included GPU wouldn't be as important since it would likely be docked for gaming and finally having a way to upgrade the GPU for such uses would mean the computer isn't obsolete in two years (since CPU upgrades are typically slow and not needed whereas GPU improvements make life or death for frame rates in a short period of time).

In other words, I want ONE Computer To Rule Them All. That means no more desktops but a notebook that can plug into a hub and become a real desktop with one USB-C plug and Thunderbolt III bandwidth. The iMac is not needed with such a computer becoming available nor any desktops except for specific power uses (leave that to a properly made Mac Pro). But Apple seems unaware of such possibilities just like they are blind to offering touchscreens for those that might need/want them even if it's just in Windows mode (so they buy a Mac instead of a PC and thus generate Apple profit instead of losing a sale).

Ah, but Apple makes money (even if it's mostly from phones and the like), screams the fanatics! Therefore they are 100% right at all times! LOL.

I can't agree more. I'm so tired of Apple's entire "Pro" lineup. And the iMacs haven't gotten any better. I'm basically looking at making a Hackintosh now. I too would love a machine like you mentioned that would be portable, upgradable and have a decent graphics card. I wouldn't even mind of the graphics card wasn't upgradable. I mean, they could at least use current top-of-the-line GPUs.

I'm also rather scared of what this 5k screen is going to do with a graphics card and all of the hot-running hardware sandwiched into such a small space pressed up right against the monitor. I've seen so many issues with iMac screens in the past from grey-smudges to yellowing of the screen. I can only imagine the heat that is going to come from this thing when playing a graphics-intensive game.

I am using that one since years with my MacBook Pro and it will replace the Magic Keyboard 2 that comes with the iMac.

It's actually just called the Magic Keyboard, as there has never been a previous "Magic" keyboard.
Also, if you're not going to use the magic keyboard, can I have it?

I dunno--

I have a 3.5 Ghz i5 retina with a fusion drive and a m290x. Got it at just over $2000-- it was discounted heavily by best buy.

I know that I would have to upgrade to a 2 GB fusion drive to get the equivalent 128GB flash. But a lower clocked skylake could provide more umph. Dunno about the R9 3xx cards-- I suppose that I would have to look at how many compute units are available.

The screens do have wider color gamut.

Anyway, I'm several years away from upgrading.

3. If $129 is nothing for you, then why not contribute towards MR?

I do contribute towards 'My Retirement'

I work hard, I earn my money, I save and spend what I want. I need to have some fun. Additionally, I do contribute to charities, especially cancer and MS research. Why is that important to you?

Why not go for the 256 SSD, then add an external TB or usb hard drive. The PCi-e ssd is lightening fast, and external tbs.usbs drives are dirt cheap now.

Yes I know it had been the same price and I had rather bought that one.
But if I change anything in the configuration:

(Was one day earlier when I ordered.)

instead of that:

I am very impatient and want to have it before the weekend or best immediatly.
And also I could really need a big screen this week for many things I have to do. I almost ordered the old one yesterday.

Sadly there is no Apple Store im my country. I't even a miracle that they launched the new iMacs here as early as in other countries. The iPhone 6s was launched on October 15th.

It's actually just called the Magic Keyboard, as there has never been a previous "Magic" keyboard.

What's so magic about the new keyboard at all? ;)

Also, if you're not going to use the magic keyboard, can I have it?

If you pay the shipping costs, what might be more than buying a new keyboard.... :D

Glad I read the fine print. I'm done with Apple iMacs. This is the last straw. Read my post here:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/new-imac-fusion-drive-is-only-24gb-down-from-128gb.1928431/
I share your sentiment about the iMac, but I would extend that to almost all the Apple computer lineup these days. Only thing left I like are the MacBook Pro models (expensive but still my favourite notebook).
But 2016 may see Apple's one-note designer (Ive) and the bean counting team destroy the MacBook Pro, too.
I don't know that I'll remain with Apple for computers in future judging by the trends of the last few years or so.
Too bad they don't spin off the computer and OS/X side of the company and leave the current crop of billionaire clowns (Tim, Jony, etc.) to deal with the iPhone.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this, but I also noticed the 4K iMac has a weird resolution. It's 4096x2304 instead of the usual 3840x2160. Why did they do this, I have no damn clue. But I'm still feeling very, VERY angry about the new iMac 21.5". They look like they're doing every single possible thing to save a penny or force people into buying more. Bunch of *******s. **** YOU TIM COOK! **** YOU TO HELL!

Although not quite as pretty. The k750 is a great keyboard. With the solar charging, I have never had a problem in three years. Love the logitech M705 mouse over anything apple has as well. Can't stand the magic mouse. Do people really like using track pads? The first thing I do with my laptop is plug a mouse into it. Trackpads just don't fee ergonomic.
I have used various trackpads over 2 decades. Apple's 1997 trackpads were better than today's average Windows laptop trackpad. Today's Apple trackpads are 100 times better than Apple's in 1997. I will admit, there are a few Windows laptops that have now surpassed Apple's original trackpads. Yay.

And most people use PCs, not Macs, so 99% of people think trackpads suck. And gamers, since games aren't made for trackpads.

With that pricing, i probably need cheaper alternatives to the magic mouse. Something with vertical and horizontal scroll

The new dell XPS 15 also has skylake, nvidia grapics, thunderbolt 3, ddr 4 and 1 TB pci-e ssd, all for £1500.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2990...-xps-15-and-better-with-all-skylake-cpus.html

This could have been a signifcant milestone for apple. since Tb first dropped, they have alwyas included the latest TB interface, before any other OEM. One may question how usefuly the standars is in gneral, but tb3 and usb 3.1 is now a new standard and offers a plethora of advatages.

Why would they use the old TB2 not alpine ridge? furthermore, why ddr3 nor ddr4, and pcie SSD as standard. Apple really are regressing, and i hope they are named shamed, and embarassed at these 'updates', when other OEMs offer them in laptops.

The higher-end offerings get cheaper while the lower-end options get more expensive and unattractive. It's almost like Apple is trying to upsell us to the more expensive option. Were I in the market for one, I see myself getting a 27" iMac and opting for the 1tb SSD and upgraded graphics card at least (which will likely be some point in the indeterminate future when my current 2011 iMac stops working).
