That is a rule from apples iOS app store.

It is the same rule that Microsoft and Google follow on their App stores. Not clear what you are arguing. Apple is not paying Microsoft a percentage of the iCloud subscription because one can not sign up for iCloud via the app, and so there is no transaction using the Microsoft in-app purchase mechanism which would incur a charge. This is exactly the same as Netflix which no longer allows people to sign up using the App Store in-app purchase to prevent paying Apple a percentage.

Without the option to selectively sync only the files I need, I am not able to use iCloud for windows as it downloads all of my iCloud files to disk.

It's seldom I use a windows computer, but I never got it to work properly - it always ended up deleting content from my icloud drive when i installed icloud for windows.
For cross platform sharing, Dropbox seems to be the way for me, keeping my icloud content to myself and apple.

btw is there any known demographic info on iphone/ipad users desktop preferences?

Well they exist.

Well i have an iPadPro + Pencil2 + SmartCover Folio + iPhone X + Apple Music + use all iCloud services + family sharing + payed iCloud subscription.

But I also use, need and prefer Windows. If you have any question shoot :p

Pretty sure one cannot signup for a subscription through here, so there would be no fees to give Microsoft. Exactly the same it works on iOS.

Well, it __is__ flagged as offering "In-App Purchases" in the Windows Store, even though I haven't seen an option to create a new account.

It doesn't anymore with files on demand. You can see your whole iCloud Drive now without having anything actually sycned. I only gets files or folders is you explicitly ask in Windows Explorer

Weird people who buy PC and use iPhone and iPad and iCloud.

The magic of an ecosystem is that everything works seamlessly. That PC just ruins it.

Having a breakdown on that butterfly keyboard or display flex cable can also ruin the whole magic, you know?

why does it says 2/1/2019 is the release day then?
From what I can tell Apple finished and uploaded the build in February but to function it needed new features from Windows 18362.145 which officially released to everyone today, but they are rolling it out slowly and not everyone can get it still. Edit: 175 actually released today, but Apple may have been waiting to make sure there were no bugs and for as many people to have 145 as possible before publishing.

That’s the main feature of this update, files on demand.

I get a your setup couldn't be started error - oh well. Maybe I'll uninstall it and try at another time.

'Weird' guy here who uses windows and iPhone and iPad. I don't use iCloud outside the Apple ecosystem cause it just doesn't measure up compared to other clouds (and has the worst technical support, good luck when iCloud acts up). I also use google and Amazon services for tv and home automation.

Guess what? It all works, seamlessly

Well, today is your day. Because now you can! Before the feature comes to MacOS too. Really great update they launched yesterday. Freed up a ton of space on my drive and I can finally upload more stuff if I need to.

Um, does this replace the current iCloud for Windows app that is distributed through Apple File Update? The integration, while not perfect, is something I rely on daily.

Sure, but then your kids have to drive a Toyota.

What you're too good for Toyota? They're good cars and I'd take a Toyota over a Merc any day.

Concerning the above in red, affordable is relative.

Well you can get a Toyota starting under 20,000$, the cheapest Mercedes I'm aware of starts in the 30K$ area. You can get an okay PC tower for 500$ where as the cheapest Mac option still starts at what, 800$? So Im pretty comfortable saying affordable.

Using that analogy, Apple used to be Lexus (luxury AND reliability), but now they have become Mercedes.

I agree. Apple stuff used to be very well made and that made the higher cost much more acceptable. But from what I've seen the last couple iterations of Apple products have sacrificed a lot of functionality and quality for "style".

yes, except mercedes/apple are considered prestigious, which cannot be said about pc's/toyotas)

most toyota owners secretly wish they were driving mercedeses, perhaps same goes for pc users? ;)

Oh please Apple isn't prestigious and I personally don't consider Mercedes prestigious either. The amount of broke college students I still see toting MacBooks around, they aren't unobtainable, just you get way better bang for your buck if you buy a PC. Same with Mercedes. You can get a Mercedes in the same price bracket as some Toyota offerings, but for the price the Toyota is a way better car.

I dunno. My last 3 cars were/are BMWs and I am going VW/Honda/Toyota next. Not worth the extra just so you can brag to,, who again? Better to invest those $.

yes, where are those stats? :))))

Ironic considering the Windows user may have money left over to buy a Mercedes, whereas the Mac user might have to settle on that Toyota :)
The value of a Mercedes is halved when you drive off the lot. Im not a fan of a -$30k transaction 5 minutes after signing the paper work and driving off the lot. A computer is a tool. Additionally Mac last longer on average and are cheaper cost on average over the useful life compared to other machines. Simpletons only look the initial cost and not the cost over the useful life of the device. My dad was buying a new machine every year. I gave him a MacBook and havent had to troubleshoot his computer at all.

this really isn't about your(or my) opinion, but apple/mercedes are considered premium/luxury brands, and toyota/windows-pc are not.

These features look excellent. I'm psyched for iOS 13 -- not psyched enough to install a beta, though :)

I am already running this app, what's the difference? I'll just stick to the software downloaded from Apple.com.

The main feature is selective sync. I have downloaded the version from the Microsoft Store and installed it over the Apple one. Now all the items in iCloud Drive have a cloud status icon next to them and a right click option to "always keep on this device" or "free up space". This is the same as OneDrive, as in the article.

Man, Windows Explorer is a great file manager but boy is it ugly. It becomes even harder to ignore after using macOS for several years.
