btw is there any known demographic info on iphone/ipad users desktop preferences?

According to Tim Cook in Jan this year, there were 1.4bn active Apple devices, 900m of those are iPhones. The last reliable figure on iPads was 265m with other devices about 100m. So that leaves around 135m macOS users at best.

Not every macOS user will have an iPhone or iPad, so 1.165bn iPhone/iPad users but less than 10% will use macOS so close to, possibly more than 90% use Windows, Linux or neither.

interesting, is it certain that he wasn't speaking purely about ios devices? although if there are 265m ipads, i guess i could believe the 135 os devices. perhaps living in nyc skews my perspective, as i rarely see non apple devices)

I got the base active figures from here > https://www.macrumors.com/2019/01/29/apple-1-4-billion-active-devices/

The remaining figures from other semi-reliable sources out there. I suspect the actual number of macOS device is closer to 100m given it is hard to know how many Apple watches are out there.

In somewhere like nyc I would expect Apple to be dominant, when I am in London it is the same. In most other areas they don't stand out so much.

Having said that, in years gone by Joe consumer needed a PC, it was the main way to access the web, banks, do basic tasks. Today they are using phones and tablets and have less need for a PC or even a laptop. On the other hand, I suspect with no firm evidence that macOS users have more of a need for something other than a phone or iPad.

Whilst I expect the consumer market for PC's to reduce, I suspect the macOS market will increase. That is unless the iPad/iPadOS develop into something people can use solely for their needs.

Really no reason to use iCloud on Windows if you already have Google Drive, MEGA, Microsoft OneDrive, etc. as options.

Especially because of lack of SelectiveSync. &+#%.

I use OneDrive for all my data. Works amazing with OneNote and Office 365. I use iCloud for photos tho. :(. Soon as OneDrive takes live photos I’m done with iCloud for data. Maybe.

So uh, should I uninstall my version from Apple.com for this, or will my version be updated? It’s not clear if the app offers the same functionality as the existing one and it just from Windows store instead now...

Just like for World of Warcraft they have changed the graphics engine since the game was released. I remember when Starcraft 2 got some physics engine changes (some years after release I think) that made it more demanding. Besides, with graphics settings turned up and if there's an immense amount of action (many units) encountering each other the game can still be really taxing despite its age.

Anyway, on my main computer Starcraft 2 doesn't run well under Metal (beta). As soon as a "new" sound is played (i.e. the first time for that game) I get a half a second hitch. Looking forward to the game getting out of beta for Metal, if that ever happens...
It's been in beta for 2 years, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I hate how bad photo syncing is with iCloud on windows.
Having finally installed this, it's still just as bad. They completely removed the UI for photos though so now it's just a folder.

It supposedly has the On Demand service, which I don't see how to manually set like OneDrive. However, it definitely does not have selective sync. I just installed it to be double sure.
It's exactly the same interface as OneDrive - right click a file or folder and pick "always keep on this device" or "free up space"

Figured it would be a setting in settings I had to turn on first, like OneDrive has. Very good.

It is useful for those with legacy apple email accounts for getting contacts and bookmarks synch :)

There will be many with no apple toys yet still have apple email

It's Windows, what do you expect?? :D
The UI is by Apple not MS and has hardly changed in years

MS have just replicated the Apple app version and added it to the MS App Store for convenience as its even obvious in this thread how many did not realize this has been available for years

Are Technica has a good article on what’s new - basically significantly better iCloud Drive syncing, supporting both selective sync (specifically tell iCloud Drive to NOT sync a particular folder) and “smart sync” (all files/folders visible, but not all stored locally in the computer to save space on the local machine - files will be downloaded on demand when accessed). Supposedly other sync features are faster/more reliable as well.

OneDrive for iPhone is great. It automatically backs up your photos without launching the app. In fact, onedrive has greatly improved over the last year. The only thing it doesn't do is work with DevonThink Pro because it doesn't support a acronym I don't really understand.

Agreed. I am not a huge fan of Live Photos, but I know I have quite a few I want to save. One of these days I need to upload all the photos I have into OneDrive so I don't have to pay 2TB for iCloud storage. OneDrive is great - I can upload hundreds of gigs in hours.

Being able to edit documents from a browser from any computer - as well as navigate a REALLY usable web based file explorer for my cloud data makes OneDrive amazing. I can share excel documents for employee work schedules, share word documents just like Google Docs.

iCloud has a long way to go. The only thing I really like iCloud for is iCloud Photos. Once OneDrive gets Live Photos (or sooner - thinking about switching anyway) I'll be switching my photo library most likely.

I find it funny that you chose the ugliest looking Windows laptop for this.

I was just about to point that out. The days of most PCs being that ugly are long gone.

In fact, these days they're the ONLY ones pushing the envelope in design and features for desktops and portables. They've even out-Apple'd Apple (Surface Studio, I'm looking at you, you beauty) in a few cases.

Hopefully Apple will break free of the design stagnation they've been stuck in, although if the design of the new Mac Pro is where they're going, then I'd rather they stay where they are. I STILL love my 2011 17"'s design over anything else out there.
