Well the amount of response to my post suggests maybe there is actually demand of this from parents that don't want to pay more for an iPad.

Handing down the typical iPad 4th Gen or Air to a younger child demands you equip it with some sort of OtterBox. I cannot tell you the number of cracked screen iPads I have seen in the hands of 5-9 year olds...mostly playing Minecraft or watching YouTube/Netflix/et al.

The hyperbole here is out of control.

LOL, the "you'll understand one day" argument rather than addressing directly what I wrote. Not very persuasive, sorry.
Actually the poster made the obvious argument. You argued that someone can get the iPhone 7 for their kids with more features for the same price. The simple fact is: Parents shouldn't be giving their 7-year old child a phone. They shouldn't be calling people without their parents knowledge. They shouldn't be able to keep their parents out of the loop with Touch ID. They shouldn't need NFC chips, or AirPods, or great cameras.

No one can understand what it's like having kids, until they have kids have their own. Addressing your point would have been totally lost on you I'm afraid.

Why would the parents be required to activate the iPhone 7 as a phone? Again, their child could simply use it as a Touch, then later utilize the phone functionality when he's old enough for it to make sense. And for the same price as the Touch. And why would they need AirPods?

It is nice to see that Apple updated a legacy product like the iPod. And there is a demographic that likes the iPod, especially for teenagers who don’t have a smart phone, I think the iPod touch is a perfect fit for a younger crowd or even one who wants to take the iPad to the gym where they don’t want to carry their larger iPhone.

That said, of course this could also mean nothing at all, iOS 13 could still support everything with an A8 or even continue to support all the same devices as 11 and 12.

My opinion only but the Touch 6 will support iOS 13 but that will be the last update.

In the past, Apple has tried to support at least one update for a year to a device sold as new.

Who could have known that discussing a simple matter of buying a gimped smart device vs a smart phone required understanding the totality of raising a child. What's next - deciding on McDonalds vs Burger King requires understanding string theory?

I can't remember the last time I saw a kid with an iPod touch. They are typically loudly playing Fortnite on an iPad Mini in a restaraunt. My five year old has an iPad Mini 2 that I let her use for about 30-60 minutes a day to play mostly educational games, read books, and watch PBS kids.

Stupid enough, I've seen more and more elementary aged kids with iPhones, usually they look like hand-me-downs, but still. I will not be doing with my kids. Probably not even until they are driving, and we'll have a good talk about phone safety then. Although maybe we won't even really use phones in 10 years, lol.
My 14 year old has had a phone since 5th grade. As soon as he went out in the world and can go places with friends without always being with you, I wanted him to have a phone to be able to get in touch with me and so I could track him. My 2 younger ones will get phones when they start 5th grade. Believe it or not there are 3rd graders with phones. I think you will have a hard time waiting until your child is of driving age to get them a phone.

You mean a (late) 2016 chip on a (presumably mostly) 2015 board with a (late) 2012 camera+display and case, with 2015 colors?

The previous (2015) model was that same $ 199 until today. What price would you suggest for the new one?

The iPod touch is limited enough that a parent, even a non-technical one, can most likely fix anything the child messes up.

Having a headphone jack makes it easy to buy a cheap set of headphones at a convenience store on a long trip if the ones they have break. A lightning to 3.5mm jack is going to get lost within 5 minutes of a child getting ahold of it, or swallowing by the younger sibling. A 3.5mm splitter is cheap so two children can listen or watch in the back seat and you don't have to be tortured by Peppa Pig or PJ Masks.

If you have kids, the iPod touch makes sense for whole host of reasons over an iPhone 7.

Ignorance is bliss.

Someone who gets it (obviously has kids!).

Sounds like the perfect gift. I am sure it will put a smile on your grandson’s face.

How bad is the camera? I mean is it gonna look decent when he takes pics and they show up there in the iPod? He's been wanting a camera, but it's not like I'm gonna get him a nice camera anyway - just don't want this to be fuzzy crappy pics.

Is a I pod really necessary any more don't most kids by the age of 5 have a cell phone that they can have games and music on and parents can get a hold of them when needed.

Someone always has to complain, kids don’t care about bezels...

But parents care about those ridiculous prices for ancient product with literally a CPU upgrade and added storage.

£199 for 256gb would be the correct pricing for what it is.

Lost in five minutes? Swallowed by a younger sibling? By that logic there's not many things a parent would ever buy their child, except for maybe a crash helmet.

What a lazy attempt by Apple. The mini 5 was also lazy, but it got the A12. You couldn’t have given this thing at least an A11?!
