They probably would have liked to, but they probably aren't making A9's any moreI suppose they could have used an A9, so this isn’t *literally* the smallest possible upgrade. But it’s awfully close.

iPods have never been bleeding edge technology wise - they've always been cheaper than iPhones and usually a few years or more behind.
This is not displayed on the website anywhere. It's a silent refresh to a product they don't sell many of. Put the pitchforks down, this isn't a big deal. This is basically a nothing product.
Good news for people with kids.
Just get an iPhone. Miles better and get yearly upgrade from Apple as well.what in the world would make you assume I am not in the market for a touch? And its not cheap at $299 for something with a decent amount of storage... It's certainly cheap for Apple to make since they are using a 7 year old design and architecture... Stop settling for these huge companies making insane margins of customers by rehashing old technology... People like you are why these huge corporations have billions on top of billions of dollars and their executives make hundreds of millions... Because you don't care and you settle for whatever they give you, and then defend them to boot... There is no excuse for a company like Apple with the cash they have for R&D to not release an all screen iPod touch at this price point. Come on man demand better.
Hey I get it. You love your notch. More power to you. But you have to admit, it is no longer unique. It is just one among a number of phones that have notches. The others copying the design doesn't change the fact that there are a lot of notched phones on the market. The others moving on to punch holes and movable cameras doesn't change the fact that there are still a lot of notched phones on the market. Unique isn't a good description of any of them.IDC. I love my iPhone with the notch. All those in the pic are copycat competitors that are now moving to punch hole displays or pop-up cams.
iPod’s A10 single core GeekBench performance is identical to 2019 Samsung S10.2019 the year of old parts sold as new devices and slight cpu upgrades, other brands are killing apple right now
With the comments here (as usual) you'd get the impression that a 6 year old is going to have a screaming fit about bezels and throw it right back at their parents.Good news for people with kids.

I was just thinking to myself "where's the market for this" until I saw your comment.
Kinda wish they'd discontinue the iPod touch line, and make an iPhone Voice + Cell Data, Cell Data only, and a WiFi only version. I could see that simplifying R&D.
That is a better deal.Go on Amazon right now. You can get an iPhone 7 for under $300. Seems to me that’s a better option than this device. You don’t have to activate the cellular.
Ah macrumors whiners at their best.Ah Apple at its best.
Reusing an old design, so out of date it hurts, and pretending its new.
What would justify a complete re-engineering of a dead product *category*?Apple could introduce TouchID on the power button and have a near full screen iPod touch with a camera notch only, would be a well designed device tbh.

Good news for people with kids whose parents don't understand that an old iPhone without a cellular plan is better than a outdated touch with a new chip.
(I fixed it for you)
People who buy a $200 iPod Touch aren't in the market for an iPhone, and couldn't care less about yearly upgrades they can't justify or afford. Unless you are going to start sending out checks.Just get an iPhone. Miles better and get yearly upgrade from Apple as well.

Apple finally picking a few of the low hanging fruit. Upgrade like this probably took the relevant engineering teams a month of part time work. But boom, the product is now much more compelling and will earn Apple millions, if not a billion a dollars over the next year or two. A nice little device for the kids when you don't want to lend them your phone. Or an alternative device for an iPhone user.
