Still 4''
I expected a new iPod touch before the spring event when they had their week full of hardware announcements, but I hoped for a new design, something like the iPhone 6s without cellular. This is 4'', no TouchID. A bigger display would have been better for games, and the only reason to update the Touch is Apple Arcade launching this fall.

Good news for people with kids whose parents don't understand that an old iPhone without a cellular plan is better than a outdated touch with a new chip.

(I fixed it for you)

Old iPhone is probably better off being sold or traded. Thank you for playing the I fixed it for you game.

Apple's whole approach of making "affordable" products but taking some old components and putting them into even older containers. ( selling "last year's" XXX next to " the (couple ) year(s) before that" product with a reduced price and kneecapping a few features ). Is likely going to be bad long term.

The company's ability to sit down and say "let us make something good that is affordable over its whole Lifecycle" appears to be completely bankrupt. To ship out a 4 year old system (2015) with a 3 year old SoC ( 2016) really takes 2-3 years to get done ?

The company sits down and spends most of their effort on the iPhone and services.

iPods have never been bleeding edge technology wise - they've always been cheaper than iPhones and usually a few years or more behind. This item is for kids or people who can't afford iPhones.

There is a reason why this product costs a LOT less than an iPhone. Any additional features would have increased the cost significantly.

Charge $99 for a 32gb iPod Touch with a 3-year-old processor and it's still a reasonable value. And almost an impulse buy for parents looking for a handheld gaming device for their kids.

But at $199, the Touch should have an A11 and the form factor & screen size of an iPhone 6/7/8, which would make it a much better handheld gaming device for kids.

Parents would do better to find a used/refurbished iPhone 7 without a cellular plan.

Define obscene. Google makes 100% margin on selling your data to advertisers because they don’t even pay you for it.

Those $100M data centers Google has sprinkled around the world don't operate for free. People do get paid in the "coin" of services. Free storage space. Free email . Free maps. It is a barter exchange that doesn't involve transferring "digital money into a digital bank account".

On web sites that don't direcdtly belong to google. It is a two step barter. Google gives them money to run their webiste which isn't charnging digital money for ( much or all ) of that sites content. That too is served up by very non free servers , hardware, and Internet services.

For those asking who is the customer or why no redesign, probably don't realize Apple sells a large number of these devices in to the retail and customer service industry. Several companies make sleds that can act as bar code readers and/or POS credit card terminals. By not changing the form factor, companies don't have to wait for the sled manufacturers to update their product.

Yes and not having to buy new sleds which probably cost more than the iPod touch itself :)

I bought a sim locked iPhone SE and use it as an iPod, the only problem is that if you use it for messaging normal sms messages are broken and won’t send without a SIM card through iMessage even when it’s connected to your phone. Bonus is that it has Touch ID and CarPlay, if you have your songs downloaded and don’t fee like plugging in your phone for a short drive where you don’t need navigation

Don’t think touch id is coming back.
Well it's on the recently introduced iPads (iPad Air and iPad 2018) so it wouldn't be a stretch seeing it on the iPod touch.. Would have been a nice upgrade and I don't think it would have cost a fortune now that it's pretty old tech.. But it wasn't to be...

32gb base storage lol

From a company that chimes the environmental flag, the base should be 64-128GB on these devices as very little has changed to actually justify true cost.

Producing and selling a 32GB storage knowing that most people will oft for higher storage is just adding to environmental waste and the accumulation of CO2. Gear way to prop those profit margins Apple, as a shareholder this is embarrassing offering.

iPad Mini and Air get a A12 while the iPod touch an A10, I guess Apple does not want to make it faster than the 2017 iPad Pro

This is a joke I hope? Most phones have notices now (unfortunately).

HUH? I guess you meant "notches" instead of "notices"....anyway. Yes I love the notch and it makes the iPhone unique IMO. Also, a lot of competitors are moving to punch hole displays or pop-up cameras now, so....

The word “same” is used many times in this article that it makes me wonder why Apple decided to release this “new” version in the first place.

Notch 100% I love the notch, it makes the iPhone look unique IMO.
You and I have different definitions of 'unique' :p:D
