People should read NYT journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones' Pulitzer-winning essay from the 1619 Project for a better understanding of what lead up to where we are today with respect to racial injustice in the United States. It's beautifully written and worth the effort soaking in the history of the country's last 400 years.

Also... A HUGE hat-tip to Apple and Mr. Cook for stepping up. One of the reasons I'm an Apple customer.

my experience has been the total opposite at Apple stores. I feel like they tend to hire people who enjoy tech as a hobby, so generally know more than someone that is hired because of retail experience. People who enjoy Apple products and use them in their daily lives, probably follow the the products closely.

lol are you really going to tell a person of color what they don’t and don’t have in America 😂

that’s like a man telling a woman what it means to be a woman. You’re so ridiculously and willfully complicit in the very issues happening in both this country and world.

please stop trying to Black Lives Matter the root of all the issues. These issues have existed long before there was a movement because racist have always existed and cops have often gotten away with murder and planting evidence on suspects and racially profiling. I’m 31 years old. Nearly 32.

Apple establishes center to promote the success of anyone who is not white and male.

I appreciate that they want equality. But "equity" is equality of outcome, as I understand it. Sounds awfully communist to me. If they do not define the success metric, then it just becomes a "no whites allowed" tech learning place.

Can anyone explain this all to me? I am a long-time investor.

The essay that was rebutted by renown historians across the county, then backtracked by Hanna-Jones as just a "thought experiment" and not historically accurate? No. We don't need more lies in public discourse, we need less.

I find the language around "equity" concerning, truth be told.

Equality means everyone has the same opportunities, equity means everyone has the same outcomes.

An example of this at my former university:

The physics department noticed how over 90% of their Master's students were male, so they actively started treating female applicants preferentially. The other departments saw that as a brilliant move and started doing the same. So now faculties that already had way more female than male students implemented programmes to further grant preferential treatment to women, and the physics department, due to a total lack of female applicants, stayed 90% male.

The problem is assuming that every unequal outcome stems from unequal opportunities.
It’s a flawed premise that Democrats have used to divide and outrage people.

Nowhere in nature do you find equality of outcome. So why should we expect to find equality of outcome in society? You cannot even find equality of outcome among siblings (the first-born statistically does better), or even twins.

If you cannot find equality of outcome among people who share the same roof, parents, schooling, and even genetics, then why should you be able to divide America up by race, and see equal statistics? It simply doesn’t make any sense.

It’s like in the U.K. now they wanna hire people of colour over others to join the police force to look diverse, there is actually training days for anyone who isn’t white, this is wrong equality should mean the best person for the job gets it and not based on skin colour, but this just isn’t the case anymore they always go on about white privilege but at the moment it’s the other way round
Well you could argue white people arent the best for police job given how theyve been policing over the years killing unarmed people left and right.

I think you quoted the wrong post, that one has nothing to do with racial profiling and in fact is arguing that it is not being done in Apple stores...

That’s your example of a law that is racist? Laws that were in the 1800’s and early 1900’s when none of us were around? I’m talking about today. Or even within the last 30 years. I know people don’t want to admit it but this continued push and rhetoric is only furthering the divide. Some of the most successful people in our recent history have been black. Again it comes back to family. They came from families that choose to be successful. If it’s systemic, then those families could not have been successful. What makes those families different from non successful families (of any color)? It’s all about upbringing, values etc. Some of the poorest African American people I know have some of the most successful kids who are now young adults. They lived in the ‘bad’ area of town growing up but their parents raised them to know better, do better, make smart choices. The majority of it all comes down to family and how you were raised.

Oh come on apple they are pushing me away bit by bit I’m all for equality but we have it in america this is just not needed

who are you going to go to? Lmao Google is nearly as progressive as Apple and Microsoft isn’t too far behind. Time for you to step outside the imaginary world you live in and stop telling people that they have equal opportunities.

You do realize during segregation times people were being lynched. Those very same people who grew up in those times are still alive and they have families and many of them raised them with the same hate they were born with.

false reports against black people all last year? A young black child attacked by a woman just a few weeks Ago.
are you really going to sit here and try and blame black lives matters for that?

but America doesn’t have a race issue. 😂

While I haven't read every single comment here, it seems like the people who don't agree with this move by Apple feel that everyone in America has an equal chance at being successful right now, and thats simply not the case. I live near a big city (not an LA, NYC type, but big enough), and there were issues with the inner-city public school system that were amplified due to COVID. The city school system is predominantly black, and due funding issues, its really hard to attract/retain good teachers, purchase new tech for the classroom, etc., etc. COVID made the situation worse because a lot of the neighborhoods where the students live do not have access to high-speed internet, hindering their ability to successfully go to school online. Compare this to the suburbs, which are predominantly white, that don't have funding issues, have access to high-speed internet, can attract/retain the better teachers, their parents may have access to better tech through their jobs, etc. etc. If a high school kid from each of those neighborhoods went to apply for the same job, and the hiring was based on "hiring the best person for the job" then the chance of the suburb kid getting hired is significantly better. There are things that the predominantly white school district students have easy access, while that inner-city kid would struggle to find. That's what I feel like these programs are important. It levels the playing field. I'm not saying this is true for every single city in America, but I bet it is for a good chunk.

I come from a country with those things. Government run healthcare sucks and free (higher I'm assuming) education devalues it to the point where every idiot goes to college to get a degree because why not?
Well, if every idiot gets the opportunity to go to college, technically that makes for less idiots at the end of the line. Less idiots in the world = Good
Also it's not free, please stop pushing that false narrative.
Of course it's technically not free, it's paid for by taxes. I assumed people reading this would be educated enough to not need an explanation.

The essay that was rebutted by renown historians across the county, then backtracked by Hanna-Jones as just a "thought experiment" and not historically accurate? No. We don't need more lies in public discourse, we need less.

Uh no... There was scholarly discussion about the cause of the Civil War with respect to slavery, with some historians taking different views and sides on the matter.

Like every other online discussion concerning race, equality, and politics, this one appears to be headed towards the proverbial dumpster fire.

I'll keep my thoughts brief.

It appears Apple is focusing some of their attention towards currently (perceived or actual, I say this to TRY and not be offensive, but I know that's a stretch in this day and age) disadvantaged people in the US.

Throughout history, great technical advances that have had major impacts on the lives of millions and billions have come from previously disadvantaged people who were given opportunities they otherwise wouldn't not have had access to.

People from diverse backgrounds think different(ly) (WOW, where have we heard THAT phrase before??) and bring fresh ideas to the table. Innovation and fresh thinking build on existing ways of thought to take the whole of humanity in directions we never thought possible.

So to set all the race bickering aside, I'm excited to see what new ideas come from this 10 or 15 years down the road. I'm sure it'll be something incredible....
Right? It is not a bad thing that Apple will be giving coding and learning opportunities to neighborhoods/communities that MIGHT not have gotten the chance otherwise, orrrr at the least do not have coding and learning opportunities *at the moment*.

It's Apple's freedom to dole out charity as they want. That's called a "good move" for society. and it doesn't have to be a political thing. Apple decided to help out in a way that they could: awesome.

let's all be Apple fans and cheer them on. If they get social credit points, so what? Good for them. They're doing something positive for our society.

As a Jew in America, the best/most free country in the world, I can confidently say that we do not need this.

There are some crazy people wherever you go. It doesn’t mean there is a systemic problem. People will always hate others because of their differences. Just a function of a normal society. What matters is how normal people deal with it on a day to day basis.

My longtime friend, who is Jewish (and has a Holocaust-murdered uncle) got me to see the media lies in 2016 and we voted for that orange voldemort guy in 2016. Best ballot I ever cast. We voted the same this time around.

So, Jews were slaves in the past, and very recently suffered genocide. Where are their handouts?

"We wanted to see more Black and brown developers," Jackson said – unbelievable.

Lots of hurt feelings, bias, etc. in this thread! My ignore list is getting longer today 💅

This is a wonderful initiative.
Because certainly the solution is to silence all voices you don't agree with so you're left with an echo chamber. Your right to ignore and I'm sure I'll be there too but maybe consider only ignoring those that are truly and objectively hateful in their rhetoric instead of anyone who looks in a different direction.

lol I said this above. But it fits here again so I’ll repeat.
You mention laws from 1800s-1900s. You do realize that we are following a constitution and electoral system established hundreds years ago.

Your logic makes zero sense.
You do realize during segregation times people were being lynched. Those very same people who grew up in those times are still alive and they have families and many of them raised them with the same hate they were born with.

are you really going to sit here and try and blame black lives matters for that?

but America doesn’t have a race issue.

Black men and women not being able to get jobs as easily despite being qualified.
As a black woman, I have to make sure I don’t sound too “ghetto” or raise my voice as to not appear like the angry black woman stereotype?

but America doesn’t have a race issue?

black women have a higher mortality rate during pregnancy because they lack the resources and education of resources because our government wants to regulate women’s body and take away funding for low income family?

But America doesn’t have a race issue?

its systematic because we see how America reacted to a black president. Even now in 2021, Michelle Obama is said to look like an ape. She doesn’t. She doesn’t look like melania.

Trumps majority base are full of racist. This is a man who referred to Mexicans as rapists. This is a man who literally has labeled Middle Easterns as terrorist.
This is a man that millions voted for.

but America doesn’t have a race issue?
And all these issues are present.
Your move to try and find a point.

We will never be able to move forward when people label and shut people down for have diff opinions, there is nothing wrong in saying all races are equal by law and stuff like this just gives Black privilege a higher statement, more and more companies are hiring people based on religion race and sexuality than skill set which is wrong this doesn’t help the race problems it makes it worse, white men feel they are being pushed to the side and like I said there’s nothing wrong with saying black white brown green are all equal in today’s society. I would even say people of colour have a higher privilege nowadays because everyone has to prove they’re not racist

Nationality != race

also, my point was that person doesn’t live in the US and clearly has no idea how bad our issues of systemic racism have been.

Wrong. Nationality DOES NOT = Race.

Clearly any person who does not live in a country can have a pretty good idea of the politics and real life situation of that country. Unless they choose to bury their head in the sand, or has prejudged the person voicing their own opinion.

Well people have to get to work, too right? So everyone deserves a free car.
As unbelievable as it may seem to you, there are actually plenty of countries outside of the US where public transportation is efficient, widespread and clean enough that the majority of the population doesn't feel the need for a car at all. I don't own one, and not because I don't have the money ( my flat is starting to look like an Apple Store without the crowd outside lining up to give me money )
And people need food and water to live so that should be free too.
water is already almost "free" in many countries.

Just make everything free! Problem solved!
Yes, that would be great, but no achievable yet. Perhaps once when we get Star Trek-like replicators ? 😎
