I don't think that is human instinct, it's the attitude of arrogant humans. But not all humans are arrogant so your statement is overbroad.

It really depends on what you're talking about, and how attached you are to it. Like I can talk about phones all day long and not get too bothered by it. I like my iPhone, generally prefer iDevices, but I can see the appeal in Androids. If someone buys one, I'm not gonna get angry about it, and assume they only did it because they're poor, uninformed, or whatever. Specially if they buy a phone that's roughly the same price as mine.

It's a stupid thing to get worked up over.

But we get into a conversation about something like cake vs. pie? Yeah. Someone's gonna get hurt.

cake eaters are freaks

They're not "their" displays anyway, since they don't manufacture them. And now you're talking about specialized applications (medical imaging) which is absolutely not what I was alluding to. The fact of the matter is this: in the smartphone market, Apple offered the best display when they first introduced the iPhone 4. There seemed to be a clear intent to offer best-in-class displays. Their competitors have caught up and are offering bigger displays with higher PPI now. Either Apple adhere to their stated intention and offer a new display that overshadows the competition in the upcoming new iPhone - or they retain the current display, which would be tantamount to an admission of defeat. In that case, I might just go for a phone that actually DOES offer a best-in-class viewing experience.

For people with 20/20 vision who can't see beyond the 300 ppi limit at 12 inches, an iPhone 4 display is the same as an Galaxy S4 display. And I never heard Apple claiming that they always wanted to ship phones with the highest PPI displays. I don't know where you got that from. And their competition never caught up to anything. Apple's iPhone displays were being manufactured by 3rd parties at all times, so anyone from any phone manufacturer could have used those displays. It was a matter of choice, not technological catch up.

And no matter what one's preferences are, Apple's marketing claim that their Retina display currently provides the best viewing experience amongst all smartphones is incredibly disingenuous. The HTC One, the HTC Butterfly, the Xperia Z and the LG Optimus G Pro are all examples to the contrary. You can probably count the Galaxy S4 amongst those devices as well.

It's subjective at best. Everyone can claim that their display has the best viewing experience since you can't measure a viewing experience.

Don't overcomplicate this. They're offering two iPad sizes and doing well - it was clearly a good idea to introduce an iPad Mini. Why wouldn't the same logic apply to the iPhone?
This is one thing Samsung got right: they're offering their flagship in a reasonable size (the S-line of phones) and a freakishly large size for those so inclined (the Note devices). The success of both product lines speaks to the wisdom of this differentiation.

Wait, and you are saying Apple products are not successful? :)

I know I love mine. It does everything I need and has never left me wanting. Samsung and all the other Android offerings aren't even a consideration, let alone a temptation. Keep em....I couldn't be happier with my iPhone.

I'm with you. I love my iPhone 4S with 64GB storage.. I'll be getting the 5S upon release. I'm too heavily invested into the Apple ecosystem to even consider anything else. Not that I would anyway.

The difference(s) between you, I and some others vs others is that we recognize that everyone has a different use case. That's the bottom line. That and we know that we are ultimately customers. Not spokespeople/marketing arm for a corporation that doesn't need our help. Oh - and that you can own Apple products and still criticize things they do and not be a "hater."

The experience of using an iPhone 4 would NOT be identical to that of using an S4/HTC One/Xperia Z or whatever. Quite simply because those screens do not just offer a significantly higher PPI (let's leave aside the question of whether that makes a noticeable difference), they also provide this "Retina"-quality at a larger screen size, thus making for a vastly different user experience. Personally, I would much prefer this user experience to the one currently offered by Apple's phones because it would allow me to better enjoy the device and be more productive. Hence my annoyance at Apple's lack of presence in the "phablet" or even just the "big screen" market segment.

Wait, and you are saying Apple products are not successful? :)

Where on earth am I saying that? They are hugely successful, obviously, I'd just like it if Apple acknowledged their users' heteregeneous needs by offering more than one screen size in their smartphone lineup (and before a smartass points out that they already do that: the iPhone 4 and 4S are previous-generation phones and difference between 3.5" and 4" is negligible. I'm talking about 4" versus a wider phone with a wider 5" screen).

how is a company that remains the most profitable and continues to increase their sales and actually creates markets that those you seem to love can only be successful at once Apple shows them the way. pathetic!

like what. i feel sorry for people i know with those phones. they constantly struggle to use them if they arent' tech people. send them a text with anything more that a jpeg file and you get a text saying, i cant open the file. then starts the search for an app to open it. hopefully its not malware. scary since it can be right on the Google Play site.

As do iphone users.

I sell phones and 95% of the people struggling with their phones are iphone users. The android users, even the older tech illiterate ones don't really have problems with them.

I may make a video today at work with comments from coworkers about it. Then a lot of those customers try to get help from the Apple store and get put on an appointment, a lot of customers are very upset about that appointment stuff

how about going back to focusing on specs and features instead of relying so much on your successful brand name > "iPhone" alone?

this will only work for so long, just ask nokia and the bberry :p
on the other hand, the smartphone market is pretty stale right now.
so get the focus back on a refreshed OS :)

Right. And do tell me why there are books that sell on how to operate the iPhone. Why the genius bar is filled with appointements to teach people how to use a function. Why Apple offers classes at their store on how to use their iPhones.

Android is hardly for tech savvy people anymore than iOS is. Your post is laughable.

I had a 3S, then a 4, now a 4 again, but a Nexus 4.

I really like this Nexus thing, just seems lightyears beyond the iphone at this point (integration with everything, etc, ease of use while having more options, etc).

I'll keep buying mbps though. :apple:

Right on. Same story here on all counts. The Nexus 4 is so smooth. I miss a few of the iOS apps, but I'm surviving well... even without iMessage. Apple needs something special with their next release... but I for one will probably be on android for at least the foreseeable future.

Ironically a BUNCH of people put up with Samsung mainly because of a replaceable battery. I have begged for years. Apple, offer a double battery capacity BTO option. Some people NEED. it. Not want, need.

I had to put my 4S on the charger twice today and considering how far I was from civilization one of those times, it was a safety issue.

Rocketman

If you go out "into the field" to remote locations, then maybe the i5 is a poor choice for you. Maybe the Razr Maxx line would make more sense?

Either that, or carry a small lead/acid battery with you to remote locations, and you will be able to charge up your phone, using a cigarette lighter adapter and some alligator clips, many, many times before having to recharge the battery.

Sad and just plain lame. Apple needs to realize it's iPhone is dated and has lost ground to the competition and get to work on "the next big thing."

But we've seen this movie before with the Apple II and first Mac. While the competition (copy cats, Apple called them. Sound familiar?) were running circles around Apple in innovation and features, Apple's offerings looked the same and only offered very modest upgrades. Sound familiar? And while they were being left behind in the dust Apple ran ads about how great their computers were and nothing gave you the experience of using one. We also know how that movie ended don't we.

I have not seen the Galaxy S4 yet, so I cannot tell whether it makes a difference or not, or if I will need a microscope to see the individual pixels on it. But that is not really the point.

The point is that Apple is just saying that its products are the only ones to have retina displays. Is Apple trying to deceive consumers or what? A retina display is just a trademark for a display with a very high pixel density. Samsung has it, Motorola has it, HTC has it, Nokia has it, and nearly every smartphone maker has it these days. They are just not named retina, due to copyright and/or trademark issues.

That's marketing for you. People will start to assume that only Apple has such a high ppi because of a clever phrasing. Of course "only Apple has the retina display" is true because only Apple has the right to call a display a retina display. Not exactly good for customers, but clever marketing all the same.

I have no intrest to start Android VS. iOS debates here since they are always the same. I can just say that the only reason I still carry an iPhone is because of Apple's Eco-System that gives the ability to sync my rMBP with my iphone, and that's what is all about for me. Except for this ability, the iPhone has nothing superior over its greatest competitors.

You're absolutely right. The iPhone has no other advantages over its competitors, Except for stability, ease of use, build quality, support, security, consistency across hardware, and consistency across software versions.

no I would prefer a forum where Apple Haters don't frequent. there is a difference and it is found in the shameless promotion of all things not Apple. I thinks it speaks poorly of anyone who goes to a user support site to bash a company they clearly don't support. it is a distraction. Only a person with low self esteem would frequently do this for free, just to trash what others clearly enjoy. pathetic!

Go to AppleInsider. They ban any forum member who is not irrationally pro-Apple. You will hear only one side to every story - the crazy fanboi side.

If that is what you want, it is available. Most people here prefer this forum, however

Why do some people mistake "hate" with speaking honestly. Boggles the mind.

And I believe MR wants a full conversation. If they didn't - they would only post Apple stories and only positive ones. They don't. They post stories of all varieties.

They can only be retina displays if the use Apple's patented tech. and there have only in ghe last 8 months had phone with a similar PPI, the design and other features that continue to allow iPhone to win head to head comparisons even when the other phone has a higher PPI, is what make it retina. To be so they would have license Apple's design which won't happen.

Retina is a trademark not a patent.

Agreed, AI is truly incredible. I've been a loyal Apple customer for over ten years, but I try to keep an open mind for what the competition are offering - some of the people on AI genuinely scare me with their cult-like Apple fandom.

Good ad, discouraging message.

Stuck with another year of very modest screen size.

Oh well as long as Apples happy ...

OMG, will all of you people who have such a stubby for big screens just go buy an Android, already?! My iPhone is big enough. I could stand a small, and I mean small bump in footprint for a bigger screen, and would welcome a way to give more screen in the current form factor. But I do not want to carry one of those ginormous, ridiculous jokes that are being churned out every six months by Samsung. I laugh at people who pull them out. If I wanted to use a mini tablet for my phone I would buy one.

The iPhone is a Mercedes, the Galaxy is a Kia, nuff said.

No, the iPhone is like a Ferrari. It costs multiples of what any average phone costs, and they only make a few thousand of them every year.

Why are you ridiculing the needs of other users? I like the iOS platform, I've invested a lot of money into apps - and I consider bigger screens to be a better fit for my use case. Don't you think it might be in Apple's interest to offer consumers like myself a viable option instead of telling them - in so many words - to buzz off? I just want a 5" iPhone, that's all, nobody wants to take away your "perfect" 4" screen. Jeez.

Actually - many, many, MANY sites and reviews have said that the 720p S-LCD2 display on the HTC One X, the display on the Xperia Z and the 1080p S-LCD3 displays on the HTC Droid DNA and the HTC One blow the iPhone 5 out of the water.

send me a link on one of those articles. should be a good read. but as i said in a earlier post, after a screen reaches retina levels, the only thing that makes a display superior to another is its color and sharpness. The best I've seen are iPhones/iPads and Sharp Aquos devices with IGZO displays(IDK about the US but they have hit the market in Japan with phones and tablets). Samasung's super AMOLED display is, while very high quality with amazing details, is as many say, over-saturated and not as realistic as other displays.
