Funny how people keep mentioning "widgets" as a key component missing in iOS. I study CS, and most people have Androids here, but almost none of them have those fancy widgets in use.

the key component (well I exaggerate - one of the key advantages I find with Android) is being able to choose default apps.

I love both my iPhone and Android. But I prefer using my Android these days.

Sorry, what planet are you on? Most businesses are still to this day running versions of windows NT. Especially large scale networks for government and corporate clients. Only a home based business would dare run on anything past XP.

Yeah... No... With big government agencies I could see this, but I work for a government contractor with 500+ employees and it's all 7. If you want another example, the Washington Redskins both at the stadium and Redskins Park all use 7 except the guard shack.

Businesses run XP and 7 on their workstations. Other versions may run the backoffice functions. And most are in the final stages of moving from XP to 7 or will be shortly. I'm still on XP at work but the IT dept says they will upgrade to 7 sometime this year. The world's businesses will all run on 7 for the next 5-10 years. Maybe longer if 9 doesn't fix some of the issues with 8.

I could see the Redskins having got their setup as a "promo" freebie from microsoft, a bit of cross-pollination type free advertising going on, so that makes sense. You also have to realise that certain government and large scale businesses are locked into expensive commercial licenses where they get blackmailed, err, I mean coerced gently into changing operating system through lack of support by the vendor. Lots of banks here in Australia are standing up to it and not moving to 7.

That did get a bit off-topic there, sorry folks...

probably because no one is buying them. seriously white iphone annoy the heck out of me. the black ones are always sold out but there are plenty of white ones left.

Really? The iPhone 5 supply here in Mexico has been very low since launch day (mid november), I have barely seen iPhone 5s here, maybe 10 in the wild tops. So no color preferences can be told from my mexican point of view.

"Mac" rumors

Of what possible consequence could it be to 99.9% of viewers
what the new ads are? This site is Mac Rumors but day by day
the Mac is being ignored in favor of esoteric balony.

It's also human instinct to think your stuff is the best ever, and everyone else is dumb for liking that other stuff.

I don't think that's true. It's silly to derive a sense of self worth from the phone you own.

That's an shallow and immature viewpoint that many never have and I think most that do get over (sooner or later).

I don't laugh at anyone based on what tech they own. That's pretty small minded. I have friends that run the gamut from buying the most expensive high end stuff to those that are fine with buying no-name electronics because they just don't really care. As long as they are happy with their purchase and it does what they need them to - why "laugh?" Pretty obnoxious actually.

He' doesn't mean that he literally laughs at them. He's speaking metaphorically.

What he means is that he feels superior to them as a human being.

See? That's different, eh?

"And the App Store is home to over 800,000 apps — all reviewed by Apple to guard against malware."

I think Apple might have spoken too soon...

Security firm: iOS Configuration Profiles could be vector for Apple’s first big malware wave
http://thenextweb.com/apple/2013/03...r-for-apple-platforms-first-big-malware-wave/

The App Store does not have malicious profiles, so how has Apple spoken too soon? Websites can have them. Something that should have gotten more attention is that site that can hide stock iOS apps.

This is not the App Store (image from thenextweb's article):

This is a rather defensive marketing tactic, and makes Apple out to be a company resting on its laurels. The iPhone should be so much greater than the competition that it sells itself. This is not a good stance for Apple to take.

Highlighting the benefits and features of your product means that a company is "resting on its laurels"? So products should sell themselves, but if a company chooses to discuss its products' features then it would be a "defensive marketing tactic" to do so?

If that's true, then Samsung must be quite insecure. All they seem to know how to do is talk about their specifications, number of cores, and minutiae that very few consumers care about. As far as I can tell, iPhone is selling itself exactly because it's outselling the competition while being at the end of its product life cycle.

This is really the biggest one for me and the biggest advantage against their competitors. I don't think it should be last.

I find this comment very amusing. Apple usually doesn't even acknowledge the bugs, unless it is way to obvious. Maps, antenna/reception issues, wifi disconnections, overheating, ,fast scrolling, horrible battery life with iOS 6. This is a company that doesn't even own up to their own mistakes.

I didn't even read Apple's email and its a good thing I skipped it. Can't believe they try to mislead the public like that. Retina screen is actually one of the worst of the currect phones and the battery life is nothing to brag about either.

vertu is a rolls-royce

i think the analogy is perfect

i would call s4 nissan gtr

Naw. iPhone is a Toyota Camry. Good, reliable, and produced by the bucketfull.

Vertu is like Bentley.

I would call the S4 a tricked-out Escalade.

A lot of companies have moved to Windows 7 already ... yes, a lot of companies still are on XP, but the number is dwindling fast (due to mainstream support ending in 2009).

Vertu is more like a tacky pimp mobile. I'm surprised people actually buy them.

----------

wait you mean the pentile display on the S4? which dramatically reduces the true PPI on the S4? oh that display.. okay

The Galaxy S4 has a PPI of 441 vs 326 for the iPhone 5?

It's official: Samsung and Android ARE LEGITIMATE threats. When a my local news outlet AND CNN talk about the S4...you know its big. REALLY BIG. I mean, that was usually reserved for the iPhone.

Tired of fanboys throwing sales and stuff. If Apple wasn't scared, they wouldn't need this. That's like Mercedes doing attack ads on Toyota.

I think the Truth is Somewhere in the Middle

Wow it took like a couple of hours to read through all of these posts and sort through the emotions, the FUD and the facts. I think the situation is not that Apple is going out of business or Samsung is going to take over the world. It is somewhere in the middle. For disclosure sake - I am a Mac and iPad (3) user but have an Android phone (Razor Maxx). I will go through the 2-3 most important points in this area.

1) Hardware is only part of the Equation - Truth be told, The G4 is a great phone - probably the best Android phone to date. But does that make Apple defeated or the iPhone 5 that bad. No. Keep in mind the most talked about aspect of the G4 is the screen size, the 8-core processor and its high res screen. The other aspects are independent of Samsung as they rely on Google for the core functional capabilities of the software environment. The screen size is probably the most item sought after by iPhone owners and it is one that would be most easily addressable by Apple. I find most of the Touch Wiz stuff to be fluff as I see it as "cool" but not something that would provide much functional use beyond what is provided in the core Android OS (Jelly Bean). The 8 core chip may not be that much of an advantage as it may include power that is not needed (therefore is waste) or it may not be as efficient as a better designed processor. (Anyone recall the original Intel P4 processor that had large clock cycle increase but worse performance than the AMD chips with lower clock speed at the time?). Fact is Apple does have an advantage as it designed its own chip with some unique characteristics that could make their 4 core processor (A6x) better than the 8-core option. Real world tasking will tell this. A final issue hardware wise where Apple can continue to lead is the Camera on their phone and iPads. This is where user's create content that they plug into their Apple/Android environment. People don't carry their cameras much anymore but rely on their phone camera's to capture those on the spot moments and push them to their photo and video libraries. Now with all the talk about megapixels - it is like the Screen megapixel wars. If the lens is not as good or the flash - a 13 megapixel cameral will suck compared to a 5 or 8 MP camera with a better lens. My 8 MP android phone takes lousy pictures in less than mid-day sunny light. I have been envious of the photos my iPhone friends take with their phone and then have pushed automatically to all of their devices while I have to launch Picasa Web and then find my photos in the gallery. Apple should improve the megapixel of their camera and the lens to offer a better overall camera and video experience. Again - they have done this with previous revisions - they can do it easily with the iPhone 6.

Software Makes the Difference - Here is where Apple needs to focus investment, It still makes the best feeling and best looking and designed hardware. My new 27 inch iMac, my iPad 3 are testaments to that. Hardware is not Apple's issue. While I still feel the quality of most of the Apps in the Apple Store is better than what is in the Android store - Google is developing and refining a software portfolio that is highly integrated because it was born on the web with a rich feature set. While Apple's software is high quality - it needs to be more integrated in the back-end (via the internet). They started with iCloud - but they need to do more. Integrate Mail, Cal, and Address Book more tightly and have it synched with all iDevices (which is currently done). However, I think the iCloud website experience Google's more closely so I can access all of my information and data through any device via the web. Second - Apple needs to continue feature development on iLife and iWork - key parts of the Mac and iOS software portfolio. Finally - they need to update iOS so it does offer more flexibility to offer something like a "Google Now" for the Apple environment. Apple does not need the needless "wizbang" features Samsung has seem to overload on - just increase the level of integration and add the thoughtful high value features.

Regarding Apple Innovation - Many times on this thread people say - Apple didn't create this - they bought it. Mostly in reference to the Retina display. That is not necessarily true. The fact is they did invent the technology behind the Retina display because they developed the technology to address edge discoloration that - when fixed makes an image sharper. Here is the link to the patent information - http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2012/06/apples-retina-display-patent-comes-to-light.html.

Also - Apple has started designing their own chips. The A6 and A7 are Apple designs and Apple has an in-house design and engineering team for this. I think this puts Apple waist deep in R&D and Design investment.

The fact is no company - Apple or otherwise - is guaranteed a dominant position. And now - google and Samsung have put up a worthy challenge. Not a company killing one - but a worthy one. They did it between Apple refresh and update cycles. Apple has a lot of design and engineering capabilities - they have a lot of talent and $170 billion in cash. They are fully capable of responding. Their one advantage is they control all the elements of their product. Samsung is still relying on Google - a company with a lot of talent and cash that might decide Samsung's influence in the Android market is not to their advantage and will work to be not as accommodating to Samsung. With little experience in developing and maintaining software - that is Samsung's weakness.

The threat here is software and integration - the real challenge to Apple is Google - not Samsung.

Funny thing about this pissing match - No one mentioned Microsoft anymore.

Dear Apple,

I will really love your iPhone if the black iPhone comes with a black charging cable and earphones. As well, I will love your Macbook Pro Retina, if I can get it in black color.

Yours sincerely,
Apple fanboy

:rolleyes: Any poor person can buy an iphone. At least you have to have some credit history to buy a mercedes.

When you see places like cricket wireless getting iphones, that's when its not "exclusive" anymore. I see broke hipsters using them all the time. I've yet to see a hipster in a mercedes. Usually they are on the bus or their nice little bike.

I'll say iphone is like a camry while the S4 is like an accord. Mainstream models for different people.

There does need to be a between phone from the high end phones like vertu.

Titanium backing + Saphire crystal display with the best tech specs. Now that is something I would pay $1,500 for. And unbreakable scratchable phone that looks good.

Really people? Comparing mobile phones to cars now?

PR is how you grow a business. Advertising is how you defend it. I get the feeling that Apple is moving steadily into a more defensive position.
