"Support from real people" What does that even mean lol

It means this:

Go to the Samsung site and click Support. Spend the next few minutes drilling down to the actual phone you own, depending on carrier, and a model number you will need to crack your phone open to see. Then see your support options.

Then go to the Apple site, and put in your phone's serial number. You'll be given the chance to have a tech support person call you back momentarily.

Now, look at Samsung's terms to receive service under their warranty:

To obtain service under this Limited Warranty, you must return the Product to an authorized phone service facility in an adequate container for shipping, accompanied by the sales receipt or comparable proof of sale showing the original date of purchase, the serial number of the Product and the seller's name and address. To obtain assistance on where to deliver the Product, please call SAMSUNG Customer Care at 1-888-987-4357. If SAMSUNG determines that any Product is not covered by this Limited Warranty, you must pay all parts, shipping, and labor charges for the repair or return of such Product.

You should keep a separate backup copy of any contents of the Product before delivering the Product to SAMSUNG for warranty service, as some or all of the contents may be deleted or reformatted during the course of warranty service.

Or, you can take your iPhone to an Apple store. They will troubleshoot it on the spot, and replace it right there for you should that be needed. No questions asked.

Clearer to you now?

I don't spend my days actively seeking cars to drive. The BMW was something I needed to drive for someone else, and the Audi... that was an exception, I sought that out :D

From my limited time in the car, it didn't seem that simple, especially when the nav screen is up and I'm not familiar with the layout of the buttons next to me and I'm not going to look down while driving.

I've never been in one, so I can't say. However, I will say I've installed an iPad in the dash of my own car for music/nav, and a touch screen next to the windshield is much nicer to use than tactile buttons you can't see.

They're also easier to work on, they're cheaper to own, they weigh less, they get better fuel economy, and they're easier to use. And yes, all those things matter to me more than a power rear sunshade :)

With the possible exception of certain last-gen VWs and that Audi, I stand by what I said. Practically speaking*, I'd rather have the Kia.

*Not talking about R8, Lambos, etc.

well, you get used to it after some time and then it gets incredibly easy and intuitive.

basically im against touch controls in cars, because you have to look where you press. in mmi, or idrive you use controls without looking. the display itself cant be closer to the road. except windshield display - optional equipement

easier to work on? you mean ifixit repairability? i leave that to people who i pay to work on it

weigh less? really? because of driving characteristics? i would prefer better suspension

better fuel economy?
bmw 116d (85kw) and kia picanto (51kw) have exactly the same fuel economy. bmw with stop&go even less. here comes the technology you speak of.

easier to use? how is that possible without idrive or mmi?

powered rear sunshade is not the differentiating factor, you know that, youre just pulling my nose :)

as i see it, the only downside to owning a bmw is the price. but price doesnt make a product better or worse, it only tells you if you can afford it or not

bmw is the same quality whether you're a billionare or poor. i would like the same cars/phones etc. in both cases (billionare or not). your personal economy doesnt change the products, and price definitely isnt among the characteristics that define a product. learn the difference between the best and the optimal or efficient.

the best thing people can do to improve themselves is to remove the subjectivity from their perception of this world. this world would be a much better place.

this is definitely out of topic, sorry

That sums it up nicely! ;)

S4 will build on the success of the SIII. 5S versus S4 should be an interesting battle in late Q3/4. 5S will also be competing with the Note III.

I think the iPhone 5 did well in Q4 because it was a redesign. I don't expect the 5S to sell as well and I wouldn't be surprised if the S4 remains king in Q4.

Apple needs a 5" iPhone.

My black iPhone 5 is a dust magnet in my pocket like no other :(

Interesting. I just went to the ATT store where I bought the phone.

Hmmm... perhaps some well interpret this as a sign of desperation. I must say, walking into the O2 store yesterday, the iPhone's screen seemed tiny sat next to others.

It looks to me as a desperate answer to the presentation of the Galaxy 4.
And if thats true and this is all they got, i fear for the near future.

One interesting phenomenon about Apple watching to me is how often the word "desperate" is used to describe any action Apple takes. Back in 2011 when they did the "if you have an iPhone" commercial, so many both here at Macrumors and other sites, were adamant that "Apple is getting desperate".

Last year when the iPad Mini was released, yes - "Apple is getting desperate", ditto for iPad 1/2/3/4
iOS 6 Map fiasco and following efforts - "Apple is getting desperate"
iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS release - "Apple is getting desperate"
Sprint added as carrier - "Apple is getting desperate"
Verizon added as carrier - "Apple is getting desperate"
Original iPhone, iPod, Macbook Air, iMac(I guess the sentiment was very true here), and the list goes on.

Here's an article from PCWorld which I believe is a typical story on this topic:

Apple Is Getting Desperate in the Mobile Arena
Apple's mobile OS has been facing stiff competition from Google's Android in the smartphone world for quite some time, but a few recent moves from Cupertino suggest that it's feeling the heat more than ever.

*snip*

I believe Apple's iPhone is rapidly becoming a niche device. Its restrictions are too numerous, its approach too condescending, and its choices too few to have the broad appeal it needs to succeed on a grander scale in the long run.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/211944/apple_desperate_in_mobile_arena.html

It sure sounds like Apple is getting desperate and is doomed very soon, except that article is from 2010. Since then iPhone indeed quickly became a niche device and lost the broad appeal....wait what?

I'm sure Apple takes all the competition seriously and work with urgency, just like all other companies in competitive industries do. However it is also pretty amusing that a company with one of biggest bank rolls in the world with a thriving ecosystem and a strong workforce is always on a perpetual brink of sudden failure if you listen to the media and the naysayers. It's a fascinating study in psychology - in some ways I wonder what they will do if Apple does indeed fail so quickly. They'll have to find a new king to knock off from the thrown, fast.

But, from another point of view, it's probably better if they are desperate. I always imagined Apple after Jobs' 2nd reign would be the type of company that always act with a measure of desperation in all things they do. However this ad doesn't really tell us anything new or a new sign of desperation. Apple has been running this sort of commercial for years now.

I just love that from day 1, Steve Jobs told the big carriers to go F themselves, he ain't making a phone with bloatware and carrier logo's, from the beginning this felt like something unique and 100% backed and built by apple, like their computers, etc and it wasn't going to get whored out in the wild like other "phones". That's the day i left my blackberry and flip phones behind with all their carrier logo's and crap and never looked back, not once, have had every version of the iPhone since launch days and plan to keep doing that in the forceable future. I stand by quality, if and when that day changes i'll jump ship. Period. The End
And yes, i drank the damn kool-aid, but sometimes if it's your favorite flavor you'll keep drinkin...

Wait... "Only iPhone has the Retina Display", yet the Galaxy S4 and HTC One's 1080p displays are much sharper than the iPhone 5 display.

It's very careful wording.

Others have higher PPI but only iPhone calls its display "Retina."
Others have better battery life but iPhone has "great" battery life.

Samsung ad writers will have a field day with this.

basically im against touch controls in cars, because you have to look where you press. in mmi, or idrive you use controls without looking.

Either way you're looking at a screen to see what you're selecting. Doesn't matter if you're touching it or not. I honestly have no problem with looking at a screen, but whatever I'm doing shouldn't require me to take my eyes off the road for more than a few milliseconds at a time.

easier to work on? you mean ifixit repairability? i leave that to people who i pay to work on it

Then you're paying more for the repairs in a harder-to-repair car. I'd rather do it myself, but then again I'm into that sort of thing.

I remember reading about the process to change the starter in a 330i. It required removing the transmission. Meanwhile I changed the starter in a Corolla without removing anything else (though the upper radiator hose wouldn't have hurt).

weigh less? really? because of driving characteristics? i would prefer better suspension

As mentioned, weight was one of the main reasons I didn't like the BMW. MB loves to advertise that you can hang a 200lb person on their doors. That's great, but who really cares? I'd rather they take out the weight they added to make that possible.

better fuel economy?
bmw 116d (85kw) and kia picanto (51kw) have exactly the same fuel economy. bmw with stop&go even less. here comes the technology you speak of.

I don't know where you're from, but in the US we don't get cars like that. The smallest Kia we get (Rio) with 4 doors gets 36 mpg highway, and the smallest BMW (128i) gets 28 mpg highway, a significant difference.

easier to use? how is that possible without idrive or mmi?

Hint: there's a reason the iPad is a top seller and has a touch screen instead of a knob you're not allowed to look at :)

<more stuff>

All of this aside, I probably would never intentionally go out and buy a Kia. Or a Mercedes, or a BMW, or an Audi, or a Hyundai. I tend to like really... unusual vehicles more than anything else. I'm just saying, if I were looking for a nice driving experience while trying to be practical, with 30k to spend, I'd probably end up in a Korean/Japanese car before a German car.

Now, to tie this all back in to iPhone vs S3/4-- the iPhone is not a Mercedes, and the S3/4 are not Kias. They are both perfectly respectable phones, and some people happen to prefer one over the other. As another poster said, it's more like Camry vs Accord. Or 3-series vs C-class. Or F150 vs Silverado 1500. However you want to look at it.

Funny. Seriously, what I meant by packing heat is when I carry it in my shirt pocket (my preference). The 5 almost sticks out of the top of my pocket. When I carry it in my jeans it's in my back pocket.

I can honestly say I've never seen a person carrying their phone in their shirt pocket. Same goes for a gun. Different strokes for different folks though.

In any case, my argument was more "in general". Pretty sure most of the folks complaining about the size of the phone don't carry theirs in their short pocket. But it could be possible I guess.

Fwiw my five would definitely hang out of my shirt pocket too. But I digress.

Looks like you now have the phone that is right for "YOU"!

All of what you mention as "missing" in iOS is not exactly new and has been this way since the first iPhone.

Apple sells a closed "user experience first" system and all the others let you tinker. Both systems work according to what Steve Jobs told Bill Gates, if you read the Jobs book.

Consumers decide what works for them. Doesn't make one better than the other.

Glad that there are choices, but people who live through their electronic devices, having to brag that they have the latest, biggest or better specs or whatever need to get a life.

These are just phones and if they do what we need to do well, great!

But there is alot more than what i said. For example i can go on any website to install an app and even directly as execute. I can go to the web playstore log in and click any app i want it will autoinstall to my phone. And i can send my aps trough whatever way i want and my friends can install it directly from phone to phone. And be sure there is even more that iphun simply cant do. And for the usability, well to me this is very usable and i can do things faster and in a easy way without needing to stay hours to find a solution to make something i wanted todo or make with my phone. Larger screen is also missed and widgets and so on.

You don't have to "remind" anyone of something unless you think they might have forgotten it. I think that's what has people surprised about this message. With their stock price falling, tons of negative press in 2013 primarily driven by the fall in the stock price, and the timing of this message a few days after the S4 is announced, you get the feeling that those inside Apple are a bit scared.

The company is scared because the iPhone represents the majority of their profits. With the competition that the iPhone is facing now, the trend of increasing competition, the prospect of falling margins, etc, must have them very concerned, particularly with the drama around the stock.

This is what I think they are thinking. A few years ago they had assumed that they would own the smartphone market just like with the iPod. For many reasons, that was never possible. Now they are thinking about what would happen if over the next 5 years phones become commodities, average selling prices fall, etc. Take away 60% of their profits? And then tablets become commodities too. And that's 90% or more of their profits (Macs hardly generate any profits). I can just imagine Apple management in a board room arguing about this. That's what this ad makes me think of, and I don't think I am alone.

Just curious what phones have better battery life. Not saying there aren't any, I just haven't heard of one. Which phones have better battery life?

Seems like Apple is going to push ads for the white iPhone 5 as the default color now.

probably because no one is buying them. seriously white iphone annoy the heck out of me. the black ones are always sold out but there are plenty of white ones left.

That's interesting. I don't have that issue. Wonder why. You have any silicon/plastic covers on it?

Now, I do live in constant fear of scratches and nicks. I still think the glass/stainless design of the 4 and 4S was the best.

Windows 7 is by far much more productive then mac. Much more efficient. The world's businesses run on PC. Macs are for "creative" people and "fun stuff".

Sorry, what planet are you on? Most businesses are still to this day running versions of windows NT. Especially large scale networks for government and corporate clients. Only a home based business would dare run on anything past XP.

"Only the iPhone has retina" is stupid advertising like Microsoft's "only Windows has Microsoft Snap". Other phones do have retina displays! Well, not technically since it's an Apple term, so only Apple products can be retina: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retina_Display. But the advertising here is highly misleading since other phones do have the PPI that qualifies them as "retina".

In truth, the iPhone display is not the best in PPI but in overall image quality. So you could say that "retina" entails the qualities of Apple displays besides high PPI that other phones indeed lack, but this ad clearly tricks people into thinking that other phones have lower PPI.

To those saying that other screens are better because they are 1080p: Duh, they're bigger. Of course they'll need more pixels.

Funny how people keep mentioning "widgets" as a key component missing in iOS. I study CS, and most people have Androids here, but almost none of them have those fancy widgets in use.

lol you do not need to crack open your phone to find out the model number, it's in Settings > About Phone

but yeah any time I've had issues with a non iPhone in the past I either went to a carrier store or called the carrier and they took care of it

Most other comparable phones have worse battery life. The Droid RAZR MAXX is the notable exception, but it sucks in other ways. Maybe if you combined all the good qualities of every 'Droid out there into a dream phone...
