I didn't expect that at all. I actually kind of like it for some reason. Like I saw others say, maybe this is them acknowledging the desire for a bigger battery? We can hope.

Apple also limits options. So if you want to stay in their ecosystem - you're sort of stuck... aren't you? "Thinner" isn't something many people care about. Back in the 90s maybe. Even early 2000's. But I have rarely if ever heard someone complain that their phone was too thick. Tall/wide maybe. But thick? Not so much.

Apple has even commented that they don't listen to customers previously. I don't think that's entirely true and the court case with Samsung revealed data that negated that. I don't think Apple PURPOSELY designs things people DON'T want. But I never said that. That's a strawman argument as far as I am concerned.
Almost all phone makers these days are selling thin and light phones. Heck there are phones thinner than the iPhone 6S. That leads me to conclude not many are complaining their phones are to thin.

this article leaves out some interesting facts:

"
The Apple case has some ‘smarts’ to justify its name. For starters, it includes iOS system integration to show the battery pack status in Notification Center and the lock screen. The case itself also includes a discreet light that indicates charging status (amber, green, or off).

Moreover, Apple says that other cases often impair cellular performance as the battery gets in the way of the radios. For the Smart Battery Case, Apple has incorporated a passive antenna which reroutes radio frequencies and minimizes interference. For sound, the case includes a specifically designed acoustic opening to channel audio from the iPhone speaker.

The company also claims its charging mechanism is better than competing cases. Most cases first charge the phone and then charge the battery pack. Apple’s case can crossover to charge the integrated battery mid-way through the phone charge cycle."

It took me 4 pages of bullsh!t to finally reach the first worthwhile comment in this thread. Thank you.

I think it must contain a tiny nuclear reactor.
Yep, something like an RTG fueled by plutonium dioxide just like the power source of a Mars rover ...
Seeing as I use an Apple leather case I wouldn't complain about a leather option, though I see why they did silicone.

On the whole, I agree with your post. Not sure why you thought I was complaining.
It wasn't directed to you ...
Just to highlight that Apple can't please everyone.
Maybe we will se a leather battery case in the next future

This seems like something I would buy, honestly. I play a lot of games on my iPhone in my free time and they can suck my battery pretty quick (for the record, my iPhone 6 still never runs completely dry on battery).
Also, I honestly don't think the bump on the back looks that bad - compared to the added thickness of other battery cases, they've consolidated their added breadth to the center of the back, meaning that when you hold the phone in landscape (say, for gaming -- which is undoubtedly one of the biggest reasons for battery drain; and logically, mobile gamers are who this case would cater to), the phone will still feel thin and ergonomic.

And, let's not forget just a couple weeks ago when Apple shipped their Watch charging station. Everyone's first impression was that it looked like crap and was a major design fail; yet, many of those who have seen and used them in person have described that it actually still looks and feels like an Apple product. I don't own one myself, but I've seen one at an Apple Store, and I agree with them -- I think people think it's really big and would clutter a nightstand, but that's simply not the case unless your nightstand is very small.
I'm sure that, despite initial impressions, this battery case will still feel ergonomic in the hand, and with a comfortable grip.

Stop being so quick to judge. Apple still knows what they're doing.

And yet people do complain about their phones losing power. Funny huh? Well maybe not complaining so much as making a joke of it and/or accepting that they need to recharge during the day.

In my informal polling - I haven't come across a single person that wouldn't mind better battery life and trade that for adding a little weight/thickness to the phone.

Would you trade a MM or 2 for another 1-2 hours of battery life (or more)?

Who designed this case, an intern? My god, I can't believe that case came out of Apple's headquarters. What is going on in there? Hase Ive just given up?
No. The battery needs to keep clear from the antennas. Those Mophies block your radios!
Could be, No?

Insert "Hunchback of Cupertino" joke here.

I liked the mophie case I had on the 4S, gave good protection and added an extra bit of heft to it so I could feel the phone in my pocket. Don't care for how this Apple one looks, though.
