Quick/dumb question:

If I have a MBP and my mother has one also, do I have to purchase this twice to have it on both computers?

I keep getting this error while trying to uptodate my imac I just bought on the 15th. I called apple and they said try later on too many people are doing this and boggin down the servers. I took out my serial number for this post.

It didn't even work to begin with... I tried as soon as it came online and it didn't work then either. It's not just that they're bogged down, there was something wrong at the start :( hopefully it gets fixed today!

I just talked to Apple and they said the free download applies to ONE machine. We have to purchase ONE additional license for our other machines.

But in thinking about this, if I have to pay for another download for the other two machines, why bother with waiting on the code from the free eligible download. I could just use the license I paid for on the MBP that is eligible for the free download.

Is there any reason I shouldn't do this? Or should I download only the free update to the eligible machine?

Did a clean install of GM yesterday (just to practice up), and it went fine. Tried to DL Lion from the App Store this morning and it shows this:

...which is interesting. Once the servers cool down a bit, I'll DL the proper copy of it to one of my other computers via App Store and do a clean install, just so I'm not ripping off Apple. $30 for an OS is well worth it.

Here's instructions I used to make a bootable install DVD; worked like a charm:
  • Download Mac OS X Lion from the Mac App Store as usual
  • From the Mac OS X Finder, locate the Mac OS X Installation file that was downloaded, right-click, and “Show Package Contents”
  • Find and open the “SharedSupport” folder and locate a disc image file called “InstallESD.dmg”
  • Copy “InstallESD.dmg” to your Mac OS X Desktop, this is the Lion disk image and what you’re going to create the bootable DVD from
  • Now launch Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/), pop in a blank DVD, select the “InstallESD.DMG” file, and click on “Burn”
After your disk is done burning, you’ll be able to boot from it with any Lion compatible Mac by holding down C during boot up.

DUDE!? Dont you realize the GM is 100% identical bit for bit to the lion in the app store. Of course you cannot install it already using a lion!

If you erase your computer and install the lion from the "purchased" version, its 100% identical if youd just install it from the GM(why even bother) LOL.

How long is the download taking for people with fast connections?

My connection appears to be fairly fast - my download took around 35-40 minutes - then another 32 minutes to install - I'm up and running - haven't messed around with it much other than a quick look - but so far it seems to be running perfect and all my applications are running as they should. I do like the new mail program - to me, that alone was worth the admission price ( which to me was FREE since I just bought my new iMac June 21st. )

Good luck !

I agree, everyone is having cake and I cant even come to the party :(

It has been confirmed there is a system issue, so wait for awhile. If you're impatient, you can download and pay for it, and the sent a request for a refund with proof of eligibility. Thats what Apple advised me.

To those having issues with what state to put in, after .com/ place your country code e.g.

http://www.apple.com/uk/macosx/uptodate/

http://www.apple.com/au/macosx/uptodate/

OK - first question - is it possible to rename folders in Launchpad?

Am actually quite liking it though, as a good way of quickly getting to lesser used apps.

EDIT - just figured it out - click on the title when the folder is open! D'oh!

OS X Lion is not listed as free in App Store for me.

Bought iMac in India on 11 June 2011.

The form to qualify my system has the State field which is mandatory. Since it does not apply for me (non US), am unable to get my system qualified. I tried entering the two letter Indian state (KA) and it didn't work.

Does anyone know a solution to this? I will call Apple and talk with them about this tomorrow morning since the office hours are finished for the day here.

The terms state only valid in US and Canada, from the uptodate page:

This offer is good only in the United States (50 states and the District of Columbia) and Canada, and valid only in accordance with the terms set forth in this document.

Just downloaded it. Burning the .dmg to a DVD now. Will do the normal upgrade when that's done. If i like it - i'll use the DVD to do a clean installation.

Have any of you done the clean installation of Lion from a burned disk (or USB) yet?

I want to do a clean install as I bought a used macbook, but I did not get the snow leopard disk....

I think everyone's question deep down is if the Welcome Video was subtly slipped in at the last minute. </s>

I can't wait to try out Lion; I'm downloading it now.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that since the retail version of Lion on the Mac App Store is the same build (11A511) as the Gold Master released to developers, you will automatically receive the updates. You're essentially running the retail copy if you installed the Gold Master.

Since the installer that you used to install the GM is the exact same version (1.0.4) as the installer that you would purchase from the Mac App Store, it recognizes that you're buying the exact same thing again. You would pay $30 on top of your already-free copy. (Free excluding the annual developer fee.)

Strange.... I haven't installed GM or any earlier release of Lion, but still I got a (almost) similar message: "Install Mac OS X lion 1.0.4 is already installed. Do you want to buy OS X Lion 10.7?"
Did buy and it's almost done downloading.

Scrolling is set to the opposite of former movement - can be "fixed"

Have lion up and running. This is going to take a lot to get used to.

Yes, the thing out of the gate that was just confusing my eye-hand coordination was the scrolling - both on a MacBook Air touchpad and a Mac Pro with a Wacom mouse with a scroll wheel. This is the "natural" movement as Apple phrases it, but it's the opposite of a scroll bar movement and the old gesture on a track pad - i.e. where you would grab a scroll bar and pull down to move down a page, the default gesture would have you flick your two fingers up / roll your mouse scroll wheel up rather than down.

Mice - To fix this, you can go into the System Preferences and for a scroll mouse deselect the "Move content in direction of finger movement when scrolling or navigating.

Gesture Trackpads - again in System Preferences under "Trackpad" - "Scroll & Zoom" - deselect the "Scroll direction: natural".

anyone have any luck keeping widgets on desktop?

What do you mean? Do you mean the way it used to be in Snow leopard, desktop showing faintly in the bacground? If you mean that, then yes its easy:

Woohooo!!!

Downloaded in about 17 mins and installed in about 15 mins. I thought there would be major slowdown problems with millions of users trying to download it today. Download and installation without a hitch on my 2008 MBP 4GB 250 GB running SL. Love the new gestures and full screen for safari is great.
The Lion is roaring!!

On leopard I was able to keep my widgets on my desktop (2nd monitor) I had a weather widget....itunes widget....istat widget.....I am no longer able to keep them on the desktop....they only appear in dashboard.
