Difference between downloading from the app store vs torrent sites

I was wondering what is the difference between downloading from the app store by paying $30 which I did and downloading it through a torrent site which my friend did and there doesn't seem to be any real difference. I assumed he may not be able to update since he just downloaded it from a torrent site but he did not have any issue downloading updates as well. Does anyone have an idea about what could be some drawbacks by downloading through torrent sites.

Are you serious? Start with the legality of your actions. It's $30.... if you can't shell out that much for an OS upgrade there is something wrong.

Amazing that you would ask this question when your signature is

Nothing is Illegal until you get caught.

I hate mission control

I cannot understand the reasoning behind some of apple's decisions. How can they get rid of spaces???????? that was the best feature of OSx, the ability of having more than one desktop. I cannot believe they got rid of it, I regret a million times having updated to this lion thing, it is missing the one thing that made a difference to me.

I guess you will be glad to know spaces is still there and accessed through mission control.

You know, Microsoft has this wonderful thing called a public beta. Not to mention you can re-arm unactivated installations if you really need to test something. The last time I checked my Windows 7 Enterprise testing disc could be rearmed to a ridiculous 270 days.

A Windows installation will run full-featured for 30 days without activation - I just build a clean VM with Windows7/2008 for testing, and delete it when I'm done without activating.

I don't mind not having spaces. Scrolling to the side or double tap to get mission control is super easy and pretty slick. No Complaints so far...

That is what I do as well. I just have the disc image on a local drive and BAM! into a new VM for testing.

The Windows 7 public beta went a long way to sell me on the new operating system. I can not wait for the Windows 8 one.

I just tried out Lion for a week only to happily revert back to Snow Leopard.

One thing I'm noticing: iChat is beachballing all over the place with Lion. Although I'm not sure if that's because I have my Facebook linked up to it or not.

If I wanted to buy it and burn it to a DVD, would I have to authorize the computers I installed it onto with the original App store account? Or would it just be a generic install (i.e. not tied to the account)?

Yes, it's surprising how fast the installation goes when the VM has a virtual DVD mapped to an ISO file. And almost all of the time the ISO is on a network server, not local to the VM host.

Best of all, the Windows 7 beta was free. The Lion beta seems to be priced at $29.99.

I want to get a NAS for home but I do not have a need. I recall playing with FreeNAS 8.0 in a VM just to test it out. I am glad that my hobby, thinker mentality is still around.

I am sure we all know how to get our Mac OS X Lion "betas" if we really wanted one.

It took me two hours to download and 30 minutes to install. i will call Centurylink about my DSL service. I reserve my opinion on any performance boost from Lion.

everything looks so pretty in full screen...but damn it takes a bit of getting used to the iPhone scrolling on the mouse.

Noticed that my MBP no longer wakes from the mouse... weird

Also TM no longer works with WD World Book (white light) which Western Digital are currently working on a fix

It's faster from torrent :D

Let me try to explain. Spaces metaphor makes no sense on single app per screen devices (iOS) hence they do not have one. And iOS is the king these days, so OS/X should follow the lead even if it makes user experience much worse. But you can always switch to Windows :D They have plenty of options for "spaces": VirtualWin, Desktops, WindowsPager, Finestra Virtual Desktops etc.

Also, if you wait a little, Apple will release iPad HD with "retina" display. They will have to introduce some support for multi-windowing on a screen wih such huge resolution (otherwise it would be a waste of screen real estate). then they will come up with a "revolutionary" idea about spaces for iPad an then OS/X will follow.

Just tried downloading Lion. It keeps saying "An error has occurred" and to "check my network connection" even tho my connection is fine. Anyone else having this problem? If it persists, I'm gonna contact Apple and ask for a refund.

What do you miss from spaces, that is not to be found in mission control?

Pleased with Lion.

The whole process took 45 mins and Im very happy with what I'm using, I faced no problems at all, didn't find any bug yet which was very surprising seeing how many people did.

Lion = Done
Waiting for iOS 5 (desperately)

Have a good day all...
